Fun fact: When I was 8, my mom deliberately hid the existence of the orange side from me because she knew I'd want to ride and she absolutely did not.

Even though this ride is... controverisal to say the least, It's probably my favorite ride in the park. I mean, what other park could get away with making guests play a video game in a NASA grade centrifuge?

MATHEUS PG As much as I miss pre 94’ EPCOT Center, the old fans give current future world so much shit. Horizons has been closed before we even hit a new millennium. It was a great ride but stop trying to diss all the new stuff. Yeah Mission Space isn’t the best replacement, but it’s a good imaginative idea that isn’t an IP.

weird that a ride that only generates 2.5 g`s would have such a big effect on guests. There are lots of Thrill rides that routinely go up to 6 g`s,and are very popular.

I think it is more the spinning motion that effects people who are motion sensitive more so than the actual force of the ride.
@jktwice8235
@jktwice8235 5 жыл бұрын
This is because Mission: SPACE has sustained G-forces rather than the peak G-forces of many roller coasters. In peak G-Force’s, you’ll only feel tat amount of weight on your body for a split second maybe. Imagine feeling yourself weigh over twice as much all of a sudden. Your body could not easily handle that, but it could. This contributes to the heart problems the two people had, because blood pressure increases slightly as more lateral g-forces are applied. As for the motion sickness, it’s because of the screen. Signs on the ride specifically warn guests not to move their head from an upright position facing forward. Not doing this results in the illusion of the film failing and your brain registers yourself as spinning, resulting in motion sickness like Expedition Theme Park said. Mission: SPACE is literally training equipment for fighter pilots and astronauts. It’s so unique for this reason, and is easily the most intense theme park experience you can get.

@@DoctorAlrightJust rode it today... 2.5Gs on this is significantly worse than 6gs on a normal roller coaster. I think the spinning janky simulator elements and sustained g force make this ride much worse.

My husband and I rode the green side last December, and hated the changes. I'm from earth! I see it every day! Show me another planet! I feel like it was made for children, while adults get the Mars side. I'm 36 years old, and I don't even have a weak stomach, I just get dizzy easily (medication side effect) and I'm horribly afraid of being thrown up on. Luckily, my husband doesn't have those issues, so at least he doesn't have to abandon one of his favorite rides. I'll just have to assure him that I'm cool with waiting elsewhere.

No matter the bad rep, the ride is an essential one at epcot. I remember as a kid the only reason I liked epcot was for mission: space (before Orange) and The original Test Track. I didn't want to walk around a bunch of themed areas that didn't have anything but restaurants, stores or occasionally a gentle boat ride (there's a LOT of gentle boat rides at Epcot). Now I can appreciate these areas (and boat rides), and enjoy them, but its essential in every park to have something that every member of the family will enjoy.

Y'all might call it code V but to my family its code Pee, for obvious reasons. My brother was just large enough to get on the ride and had to go to the bathroom. We had gotten chosen to take a tour of the back section of the ride. So he couldn't go. My family told him to hold it. We got done on the ride and my mom said lets hurry so you can go to the bathroom. He looks right at my mom and says "oh I dont have to go now." We look at his pants and its soaked. He had not realized all the pressure made him uh leak out.

I only just rode the green version for the first time and thought it was fun and a great use of stunning images we have of the Earth. I was curious about the Orange team so I watched some recordings of it. I’m glad they updated it! It was bothering me with how much ice they showed at the Martian equator at the end part (there’s pretty much none at the surface). So the scientist part of me is very happy to see that they changed it in the current video. I’m loving these videos and the expedition through Epcot.

My favorite ride of all. In fact, my coaster-loving friends weren't comfortable with Mission Space, which surprised me alot. And, yeah, it seems like a love it or hate it type of ride. But I loved it. And I always rode the full spinning version. I never noticed the spin or any type of motion sickness. Interesting how people's bodies respond completely differently.

Visited the park in 2009. I was aware of both the Green and Orange iterations before riding it. Did the Green one first, went back in line and then went for the Orange one. Had two very pleasant loss of vision/blackouts both during takeoff and slingshot around the moon (both simulated 2.5 G experiences). Weirdly enough, I loved it. Felt weightless throughout the day. I would definitely go on it again.

The last time my family visited Disney World was in 2003, and though as the oldest of the kids I remembered much of the 90's attractions but Mission Space was the big new ride when we went to Epcot. My mother has neck issues & refused, my younger sister was terrified of the concept, my father with his degrees in Maths & Sciences who grew up with Doctor Who/Star Trek/Star Wars etc was hoping at least one of us would want to try it and my younger brother who was the youngest was scared of many fast rides at that age...Leaving me, the one kid who had a little bit too much of the daredevil spirit that scared my mother. So considering I was NEVER one to pass up the more intense rides/experiences I think it says a lot that even my teenage self wasn't sure about going on because of those huge signs & special areas to care for guests afterward that to my knowledge NO other Disney ride had ever had...No others had the many many huge signs with scary words that warned guests in such an intimidating manner. So my father and I annoyed the rest of our family for more than an hour staging a debate outside the ride as we discussed the potential risks & severe effect warnings vs the actual experience and whether it was more than just legally required to state such things or if it was part of the anxiety building strategy of the ride. We didn't end up going on and I regret it. However if I had understood more of the "how" of the ride as shown in this video I think my hesitation would have been lessened and I would have gone for it, but the information around the entrance that just stated the intensity & the astronaut "experience" was probably more intimidating than the actual ride because it was rare & therefore "unknown". Either way I plan on getting my chance at this ride during the next theme park vacation in Florida. For my teenage self.

So, I'm not a big spinning fan, so I was pretty wary about going on Mission: Space. My wife and I figured we'd try the Green mission first, and see how I felt after that. Green was enjoyable, so next day when we were back at Epcot, we got in line for Orange. Again, knowing that I didn't handle spinning well, and knowing the rides infamous history, I was still a bit nervous. I made sure to do everything the ride said, keep your head back, keep your eyes on the screen ect. When the centrifuge first kicked in for launch, I did have some minor discomfort while my brain tried to figure what exactly was going on. I did make the mistake of looking down at my console while doing the moon slingshot, where I started getting disoriented, but snapped my eyes back on the screen. After that I was good to go. It was funny, getting off the ride I told my wife that that would be a once per visit ride only, as I did enjoy it, but felt like it had taken me to the edge of my comfort zone. However, after wandering around Epcot the rest of the day, I kept thinking about Mission: Space and found that I was feeling the pull to go back again.

Man...I feel bad for Mission Space and it's imo overblown reputation for being dangerous.... I utterly love it to death, and must be one of those special few who could take it, even from launch day. Those G's are something else and I love it. I thought everyone was wusses for them needing to tone down the ride. I remember being in que for this ride for the first time and being just as shakey and scared as if I was about to go on a new roller coaster. Disney really set the mood in this one on feeling like your about to be an astronaut on a rocket. I'm scared this ride will be axed just from this negative press along...every time I go it's an instant get on with no wait usually, which is really a bad sign in a packed Disney park...I don't wanna have to say good bye to it like I had to with Illuminations...

I can't stand when people complain about this attraction. YES it has spinning G-forces, its a simulator, they plaster signs everywhere. YES its a small enclosed space, its a cockpit of a space shuttle for christ sake. YES, it can cause complications if you have pre-existing conditions. If you choose to ignore the warning, and react negatively to any of these things, you brought it on yourself. Its an amazing attraction and I love the refreshed version.

I never rode the Orange or the intense version, simply due to the fact that I know I get really bad motion sickness and I do have a heart condition (a minor form of tachycardia). I've ridden several roller coasters before without incident, but considering I started my college program right after the second death, I was like "hm... yeah, not taking any chances." So I'll never get the chance to experience the ride as it's meant to be. Some people just aren't meant for space travel, and I'm one of them.

Never did ride it while we were there. Cast members scared me off a bit when we asked about the ride I will have to try it now, most likely the green version. Lol.

I only went to epcot once and rode the green one,I felt fine no problem. I wanted to do the orange one but I chicken out. At that time I didn't even knew people died on that ride, what made me scared of not going in was all the risk stated on the orange one lol. Even now I still have doubts.

I don't understand how people were able to sue over the ride. There are warning signs all over about the ride and it literally says not to ride if you have a know heart condition and both people had known heart conditions.

Hopefully in the future orange team and green team simulator so I actually have a built-in camera and eat simulator, so these cameras can be used by a staff member who is operating from the control room specifically designed to spot nauseous riders

Jon C so you think they should get rid of roken rollcoster and tower of terror? Becuse i know a ton of pepole that cant ride them so they are not for every one. What kind of argument is "every ride should be for everyone"

theendofit no im not saying that, what im saying is the rides at the parks need to varry for people that can handle certain rides. And i think that what makes a good ride is its story.epcot ans hollywood studios diesnt have a variation of rides right now only a select few wich doesnt make a park there needs to be more and thats were the updates ir expansions come in. im not against the rides so yeah. And also a ride like horizons being back at epcot would bring back the spirit of what horizons and epcot stands for

When Disney was doing soft openings of this ride I was able to ride it. I believe (no proof other than personally riding it) that they have toned it back from what it was compared to what it is now. (There was no orange / green version).

Liked the video, but I'm surprised you didn't talk about the supposedly taming of the orange ride. Lot's of people claim, and I think there is data out there saying the ride used to do 3g's, and it was tamed down after some of the incidents to 2.5g's. I personally went on it when it first opened and have been on it many times since. My first time I blacked out and felt more intense then it does on after visits.

This is so strange to me, I was 10 at the time I rode this in 2005, so just before they split off the ride into orange and green. I adamantly refused to ride roller coasters back then, because I have a phobia of vomiting and associated roller coasters with vomiting, yet apparently did not put up any fight when my parents tried to coax me to ride something, anything at all. The irony of that lmao. I think I assumed this would be nothing compared to a roller coaster. And somehow, I had absolutely zero issues riding this, I honestly cannot remember anything negative afterwards, and I didn’t get sick. Would I do it again now? No way, I’ve developed stomach issues in adulthood and I avoid my phobia as much as humanly possible.

The Grvitron/Starship 3000 pulls as much and sometimes even more G's than this. It must be the drastic stop and go that throws people's bodies off on this. When I'm on the Starship it really doesn't feel like an insane amount of force

In that same heart condition is probably true for that adult as well. Nobody knows where his name is. Nobody knows where he was born from. You don’t know that he didn’t have a congenital heart defect because of this intense experience

While I can't say if it's a good replacement of horizons (and I doubt it is) it's still a great ride on its own.
