Thank you, Dr. Gates. For shining a light on yet another area of African American life that has been kept out of our children’s everyday history books.🫡 (And this was only in one area of Sports. So much more to be acknowledged. In all Facets of American history.)

This is unfortunate and awesome at the same time. Segregation was horrible. End racism ✌️ (unfortunate that they had to make a separate league due to racism) (awesome that they were able to make a separate league because of racism)

Could information be given on the YMCA? It seems like there might be some Black history there. I do know many men and women stayed there when they first came to the cities. A safe place until they could find permanent housing.

It's extremely difficult, if not impossible, to encapsulate this story into 2 minutes. The man recognized as MLB's first African-American player was Moses Fleetwood Walker with Toledo in 1884, when the American Association had major league status. Plus, it's incorrect to say that the Dodgers "drafted" Jackie Robinson. They signed him away from the Kansas City Monarchs, and paid the Monarchs nothing. MLB had no draft until the 1960s. The situation in MLB pre-1947 wss institutional racism of the first magnitude, though apparently you can't teach that in the state of Florida.

Florida was the worst. Mississippi and Alabama get all the grief. But Florida was horrible. Buck O'Neill didn't graduate HS because only 4 schools statewide admitted black students. And of course, a Florida sheriff came on the field to halt a ballgame Robinson played in with the Dodgers. Post WWII!

I wish you would’ve included Mexico in this video. They were the first ones to desegregate baseball.
@dominiquewindom5820 Жыл бұрын
Okay, but why "the what aboutism?" I do think it was Jackie Robinson who was the first to desegregate.
@o.d.b.5344 Жыл бұрын
@@dominiquewindom5820 lmfaoo you need to learn your history! Mexico desegregated baseball before the United States. By 1940 there was already 63 black players playing in Mexico. Jackie’s story wasn’t until 1947. Mexico was ahead of the US when it came to that but people like you wouldn’t know cause you only talk about Jackie.

@@o.d.b.5344 I do know history; however, why when it is Black People all non-black people want the attention? Most of you really do not think of us positively, so let us have our moment. Instead, just comment on Mexican Americans in Baseball on that KZbin video not ours. By the way, I have 1% Mexican heritage, so no disrespect, but keep it there.

@@dominiquewindom5820 “most of you really do not think of us positively” and that’s where you’re wrong. You REALLY need to stop generalizing. You’re truly a goofy. I mentioned Mexico because they indeed did it first. A lot of the black players that played in Mexico went on to become hall of famers in the big leagues. Mexico helped a lot of African Americans it’s just facts. Just give credit where the credit is due.
@dominiquewindom5820 Жыл бұрын
@@o.d.b.5344 I do know black slaves in the 1800's did migrate to Mexico, as well as, Canada. So, yes black people would be on those teams. But, why take away from our video though? A black woman and black man in Africa are the original people, so yeah we are going to be everywhere even in Mexico and doing better than most.
