Priest-holes were used primarily in the 15th and 16th centuries by catholic priests after the Henry VIII sacked the monasteries when he wanted to divorce Cathrine of Arrogan . Catholic’s still continued to practice their faith but were worried they’d be discovered. If there was a raid, they’d be executed, so some wealthy families built these hiding places for their priests and cupboards for their articles of mass. Amazing to have such an important part of history in your home. Xx

Those old photos of the house in shambles just about made me cry. I really needed to see that things can be restored to be beautiful and bring happiness again. It all just tied into what's happening in the world for me. That plus the age of the house, the photos of old residents... I love the romantic feel it gives your entire home. Just imagine all the lives that passed through and all the events that took place there. The epic love stories, the laughter, the passionate arguments, the grief. You've really chosen a spectacular home.

Omg!!!!! This takes me back to our “forever home” 30 years ago. We bought a beautiful Georgian property with 2 acres of garden. The gardens back then, because of the size were more or less just lawn but we had the whole garden designed. We had it designed so that the area closest to the house was beautiful & formal and then it expanded to more grass space but the whole garden was surrounded by deep herbaceous borders. Gardening became my life. I loved it but it’s hard work!!!!!! A little tip, if you don’t mind me saying. Have an area of the garden directly from the house that is low maintenance and that you can enjoy without seeing the whole garden, because trust me, when you have a large garden you can never truly relax and enjoy it because you will always be bugged by the little things that need doing. Eg, those weeds that popped up within a few days. Make the rest of the garden like secret little gardens. That way, you can enjoy them as and when. Anyway, just giving a little bit from my experience of an old house with a large garden. Congratulations to you both on your new home. It’s beautiful and I wish you both good health and happiness 😘

The house is gorgeous and it was redone amazingly well! As a conservationist myself, it is not a small feat to do it properly while maintaining its originality, so well done! In my professional opinion, I would do nothing massive to the fireplace, just put some protective iron gates in front of it, it is one of the original and most beautiful features of the room so it would be a shame to cover it! Enjoy it! I love the vlogs and am looking forward to many more!

The picture with the people in it, clothing looks to be 1930’s. The priests hole, was used to hide the priest during the time when Catholics were not allowed to worship freely. This was a backlash from the fires at Smithfield where Protestants were burned to death for not converting to Catholicism. That was during Mary Tudors reign. Old houses like yours, and definitely during Queen Elizabeth the firsts reign often had chapels in the house. I read a lot! I’ve read English Novels, history, true books since I was 14. I’m 60! Hope this helps

Oh, my, Josie! Thank you for sharing a bit of the history of the house. The conservationist who restored the structure truly did justice to the project. As an enthusiast of historic properties, I can't help but admire those who consider their tenure of ownership as a sacred trust to maintain and protect such important assets of culture and history. I recommend looking on oka , they have some beautiful things that would go perfectly with the aesthetic of your new home. I know that they had a lovely tufted coffee table with weathered oak. I hope your both settling is well and enjoying and getting used to the new scenery. Wishing you all the best.

Love your new home, just gorgeous! I have found pouring boiling water on the weeds growing through the bricks in your paths work really well. You need to be careful not to splash your toes, but it is a less expensive, and an eco way to deal with weeds. Of course make sure your fur babies are not around you. You can do this once (or a couple of times), and then usually after one day (24-36 hours), you can sweep the weeds up. Vinegar works well also (not on gardens as it kills the roots with any plants), but it is easier to use boiling water - less issue with buying and carting bottles back home. Many blessings to you both with your new venture - how wonderful! Congratulations! From Australia.

Hi Josie, I love your vlogs - thank you for sharing your life with us. I love your fashion and beauty vlogs and am really enjoying your new home content - stunning. FYI priest holes were build into the homes of wealthy catholics during the later part of the 16th century. After Henry VIII split from Rome and we became a Protestant country. During the reign of his daughter Elizabeth catholic’s were persecuted (lots of catholic plots to try and overthrow her) catholic’s could not practice their faith openly. Priest would come into the country illegally and preach in the homes of wealthy catholic’s. It was considered high treason to aid or harbour one. With priest catchers around - they had to be hidden or the priest and families were in serious trouble! Please keep doing what you’re doing - lovely - thank you.

Bc some wanted to continue to be Catholic, they hid their Priests in Priest Holes (usually found near the Fireplaces & about 150cm x 90cm or a bit larger) which often led to a secret passage thru the walls & tunneled under the ground to a place away from the House, to safety!

Josie, your new home is incredible. I am thrilled that you are showing the old photos next to the current shots of the building. And that you are showing the “before” pix of the house before you paint and furnish it to yours and Charlie’s taste. What an epic adventure for the two of you. It would be lovely to have your wedding in your beautiful garden! Please keep on sending these videos. I love that you do your I boxing’s as the deliveries

I am very interested in the financial part of buying a house. Of course the decision to share this information is completely yours , but for me as a person who is about to purchase her first home I am curious to know how much it cost you this gorgeous house or the deposit of it , roughly how much you need to maintained it, how much is costing to furnish it ect. I feel like my 20K won’t let me allow to go far :(

Come from family money, become an influencer, get with another influencer, get paid to advertise stuff online then maybe you too will be able to afford a £2 million home at 28!

It's obvious, its come from selling the house in clapham( that her mum bought ( josie claims she bought the clapham house with her mum, but I dont believe that, how can u buy a house at the age of 20)sadly her dad died when she was 13 so he proberly had a life insurance policy to pay out that brought cash in and savings) london homes are very expensive) . Shes then sold the clapham house to then put that money towards to cotswold house. I do believe josie does work hard but theres no way she would have been able to buy the cotswold house without selling the house in clapham. So having really wealthy parents helps!!
@stevescottukss
@stevescottukss 4 жыл бұрын
@@kittensrus1570 You're so right Neel. The Clapham house was purchased for £650k when she was 20. No 20 year old gets a mortgage of that value without parents help. It sold for just over £800k so that still leaves over a million quid left to pay on the Cotswold house. You can see from her earnings (Filings) listed at Companies House that she doesn't earn anywhere near enough, even with her bf contributing to get a bank to give you additional million plus mortgage so this can only be from family money. I imagine her Mum is probably living in part of that huge house. This is the downside of some Influencers, they post stuff like this to make out they are so successful and have so much without being honest about how they got it and some of their followers will watch this aspirational BS and feel rubbish about their own lives.

@@stevescottukss I did used to think josie was self made but I'm not keen on her anymore!! Your right theres no way a bank is going to give a 28 year old a million pound mortgage. How much does she earn a year. Her mums defo in on it x

Thank you so, so, so much for sharing your home with us. I feel so privileged that you're letting us into the history of your home-one that we otherwise wouldn't be able to experience. It's amazing all the work that the previous owner put into the house-I didn't realize it was basically in ruins when he purchased it! Good on him for bringing it back to life so the legacy can continue.

You have cables / wires in that little cupboard, do not put anything in there. Bad idea for the food and the cables. It is very pretty house that looks so nice to live in.

I really like the off-white and cream in the temporary bedroom. Hard white could look cheap and maybe look less authentic. Careful changes in this tastefully renovated house seem appropriate. And: your natural eyelashes are so pretty!

So beautiful and so full of splendor. The previous owner has worked wonders, the touches like the glass covered water well have been so sympathetically preserved whilst creating a beautiful usable home... a home clearly built from the heart, and now its journey continues to be filled with warmth. Be happy darling, as I'm sure you will be... Peonies are my favourite also.

Hi Josie - Lovely learning more about the history of the house. Houses have stories and most of the time are around much longer than us and 'see' so much. 'If only walls could talk'. I agree when you say that the previous owners have done a fantastic job of upgrading and modernising the house while still keeping all the authentic character and historical elements. Seeing how it was in the past is fascinating, and you can tell how much transformation has taken place. Do you have any favourite parts/features of the house yet? :-)
