Between the 3rd and 2nd centuries BC, during the Attalid dynasty, Pergamon enjoyed its time of greatest splendor. The largest Hellenistic temples were built there, such as the altar of Zeus and the sanctuary of Athena, which for years was a source of dispute. The Pergamon library was the second largest and most important in the ancient world, surpassed only by that of Alexandria. Its interiors also served as a school for grammatical studies, although focused on Stoic philosophy.
