I used to go creek stomping in my old shoes then ride my bike to the local pizza hole in the wall and grab a slice and play Rastan until the streetlights came on back in the late 80s ! I miss those days 🥺🥺🥺😥

Crazy Story, The first time I played this amazing atmospheric game I also met Frank Stallone in Astoria Queens NYC, Yes Sly's brother in the same Deli that had the cabinet I was playing Rastan in 1987 and he came in the deli where I played it, my mom started talking to him because she instantly recognized him, and he had a music school on Steinway street, I met him and told him he was a great singer in that street scene in Rocky and he was a nice guy. I went back into playing Rastan and the music it stuck with me. Years later I bought a rastan cabinet from a warehouse in Coney Island for 300, I had it for four years until I sold it and later bought a slim Galaga arcade cabinet being I had moved and needed something slimmer, I regret that decision. Anyway this game's music is burned into me, This is when Taito hit the ball out of the park and from that point had a slew of games with awesome music and audio, and wow what a bassy cabinet when you put a coin in and hear that Damm slam, great years for Taito

Great video, I have loved Rastan since its launch in '86! One fun technical note... The smoothly animated swinging vines seen in the game were achieved with a particle effect. They even show it off by making the separate pixel particles different colors. And it was actually a reused effect that they created for Jungle King/Hunt several years earlier!

That soundtrack, dude. Also, it was my all time favorite arcade game outside of the original four-player ninja turtle arcade game. Every summer in the 1980s, my family went to the Keys to hunt lobster. We stayed on a campground island called Sunshine Key, and there was an arcade there, and this was the game I played the most. I remember that arcade perfectly, and where it was. I'll always have a soft spot for Rastan.

Ah one of my all time favorites! A shining example of how to squeeze every ounce of goodness from the limited resources available to arcade systems. Even today I'm still amazed at the sound and what they were able to do with it. I have the tunes downloaded and listen to them now and then when I want a pick me up. The animations and colors were all top notch and hold up for arcade games even today. This was one of the games I worked at mastering as a kid and eventually could one-life the game. I was able to do this with several other games (Black Tiger, Akari Warriors, Spy Hunter, Discs of Tron, etc etc).....yup, spent tons of time in arcades. Great video! Thanks for making it :)

Thank you for saying Taito correctly! Many people don’t know the proper way. My local 7-11 on Lincoln Ave in Chicago was a test site for video and pinball. They had Rastan there which I believe was the Japanese version or test. The bats never came out if you stalled anywhere. Also the generic enemies that are abundant in green were black on the version I played. Didn’t know there was an Apple IIGS version which I would have gotten for sure! This is one of my favorite arcade games with the whole package! Thank you for doing a more in depth vid on this classic. Keep up the great work as always! Maybe see ya at a future MGC.

Rastan has got maybe the best soundtrack of any arcade game. Tough as nails, but a great game.

That original game has so Much Atmosphere. The intense music, pulsating and pounding - slow bit building to to that crescendo! Along with the heartbeat and the attack sounds! The music and sound effects are top notch example of immersive. Then we have the great graphics of the time and the Beautiful colors and changing sky which also helps create and capture that mood. Beautiful game.

That old Conan PC game is so Nostalgic for me. I remember playing it on a school computer either in the late 80's or early 90's. The computer was probably an Apple II.

Great video! Loved this game when it came out in the arcades. Glad you included the Apple GS conversion - the Artist did a remarkable job of recreating the Graphics in only 16 colours. However, the scrolling is wobbly and tears quite a bit. BRAVO for including the Amiga version - which is being made right now. You are right up to date! So far, the Amiga version looks amazing: great graphics and both scrolling & animation are beautifully smooth. And it does the music perfectly! All the more amazing for being made using an off-the-shelf engine rather than one written specially for the game.

The 1st Rastan is definitely in my Top 10 hack 'n slash games of all time. I grew up playing the Master System version and had no idea of the computer ports but had I known about the MSDOS port I would have played the heck out of it with my Gravis Gamepad or Capcom 6 Button controller especially with the Adlib FM support which still wasn't common place during it's 1990 release. For a long time there was no way to play the Arcade version unless you were patient enough to run it on MAME command line in the late 1990s but that all changed when Taito Legends came out. Rastan was another game that would have fit nicely in the Genesis launch called Super Rastan or even in it's 1991-1992 early-mid years when other ones like Thunder Fox, Cadash, and Saint Sword came out. Instead we got Rastan Saga II which lost the plot and feel of the 1st. Ted DeBiase!! 😇

Rastan is one of my all time favourite arcade games as for the cool graphics, excellent tight gameplay and that amazing soundtrack. Have you done a video on the R-TYPE game series as that is my all time favourite arcade shoot-em up! Thank you for all your amazing in-depth videos, a real joy to view.

Love this game, but not being allowed to continue on the last stage sucks. One interesting thing, the poison item only does a little damage and gives a ton of points, so it's actually not a bad idea to grab it since it'll usually get you close to an extra life.

You don't jump higher with a longer button push and there are 7 songs. Opening song (not in the US version) Main theme, castle, boss fight, level clear, final boss fight and the ending theme.
