Thank you for watching! Two glaring errors have been pointed out: -Russia's oblasts were called governorates under the Empire. -Neftegorsk was destroyed in an earthquake in 1995; for some reason it still shows up on Google Maps so I got confused. It was also known as Vostok between 1963 and 1970.

Some of you are right to point out that Sakhalin had plenty of opportunities to found its own nation-state before the 1860s, since no empire had established de facto control. However, this didn't or couldn't happen for 3 simple reasons: (1) Sakhalin was too damn cold, with little useful resources before industrialization; (2) the population of the native inhabitants was too small; and (3) Poor logistics and connectivity with Mainland Asia and the Japanese Archipelago, resulting in little trade and technological transfer. In summary, the land was harsh, there's not enough people, and it's too far away from everyone else.

The climate of Sakhalin is not too unlike Norway, Finland, or the Maritimes of Canada. The people that settled there just were not motivated to unify, which is what Scandinavia was like for most of Norse history until certain families acquired enough power to establish hegemony.

Чуть позже туда стали переселять потомков Запорожских казаков - жителей Причерноморья и Центральных областей современной Украины English (Английский): in fact, the settlement of the Far East began during the Russian Empire and was carried out by the Don Cossacks, who, having conquered the lands of Siberia and the Far East, received some part of them for their possession. A little later, the descendants of the Zaporozhye Cossacks - residents of the Black Sea region and the Central regions of modern Ukraine - began to be resettled there.

日本語は母音+子音で一文字だから、子音単体で使うことがない。 だから無理やりアルファベットにすると変になる。 "+"も英語だったら"plus"だけど、日本語として発音すると"pulasu"になる。

Then it is not the kingdom of Moscow, but the Grand Duchy of Vladimir. Catholics called it Muscovy after the name of the Capital. It’s like calling Eastern Rome as Byzantium, it’s not reliable.

It should belong to its native peoples(either Ainu,Nivkh or even the Oroks newcomers they are) at the very least but sadly the Japanese and the Russians took care of the poor people. Only 5000 Nivkh, 295 Oroks and 3 Ainus left disgusting stuff.

Bro they never owned the northern half of sakhalin and they only owned the southern part for 40 years. Furthermore there are practically no ethnic Japanese there. Why don't you ask the people of sakhalin whom they want to be part of, instead of just flabbergatsting with your western know nothing attitude?

@@mappingshaman5280 Wise words! I'm am from Sakhalin, and its common here to joke about how we should leave Russia and join Japan to get access to their wealth. Although, it's nothing more than a joke and people of Sakhalin are very patriotic towards Russia, even koreans. Only people who are dissatisfied are some younger koreans, who prefer Republic of Korea more than Russia. I myself had 4 ethnic koreans (out of 19 people) in my uni group and 2 of them left the country by repatriation programme.
