I"m born and raised in ATL, GA and we all grew up on Southern Rock, in the dirty south. These bands are great, thanks for the love to my gen: The Black Crowes (seen em 25 times), Drivin' & Cryin, DBT, Widespread Panic (seen 85 times) and Gov't Mule (seen 15 times). I saw the ABB about 20 times in concert. Skynyrd are Icons still, and love me some Marshall Tucker Band. Thanks Pete!

I'm Irish, 1st gig I ever went to was Blackfoot when Maurader came out never forget it, one of the best bands I ever saw. Brilliant album they were living the dream then. Anybody got a time machine to spare :)

ALAN FLYNN .. I saw Blackfoot on the same tour at Sheffield. Awesome live band. Samson (Bruce Dickinsons old band) supported them, they were really good too. Blackfoot are one of the best bands I ever watched live.

I grew up on Southern rock and and these bands are great, but Henry Paul Band is/was very underrated and underappreciated and deserve more mention whenever discussing Southern rock. I'm glad you mentioned them here.

Black Oak Arkansas was a great band. They were great musically. What a live show they could put on. Rauch and Roll is a very underrated Live Album. They didn't get the air play and sold out a lot of shows. No one could strut across the stage like Jim Dandy.

Southern Rock = Underrated sub-genre! Love it and the more bands I discover, the more I enjoy it. Lynyrd Skynyrd saw them in 2004 and were great. Always big fan of ZZ Top and Allman Brothers. Wife got me into Black Crowes, can't believe I missed them. Thanks, Pete!

My favorites would include: 1. Allman Brothers 2. Lynyrd Skynyrd 3. The Outlaws 4. Govt Mule 5. ZZTop 6. Marshall Tucker Band 7. Blackfoot 8. Molly Hatchet 9. Early Charlie Daniels Band 10. Henry Paul Band 11. Rossington-Collins Band 12. Atlanta Rhythm Section I've seen every one of these bands tearing it up at least once. The Allman Brothers about 35 times. Skynyrd, I only saw once before the plane crash, but several times after. I'd rate Point Blank over .38 Special, who were too pop oriented and slick, for me. The Outlaws, Molly Hatchet, and Blackfoot were all ass kicking bands every time that I saw them in the late 70's. Wasn't crazy about Blackfoot going metal, but they were awesome on their first three albums. Marshall Tucker had Toy Caldwell, the Doug Grey version doesn't rate. Henry Paul was smokin' on that first tour. I saw them twice, in '79-80. I put ZZTop on the list because you did. Texas, however, is it's own entity. I'd rate The CDB's 'Fire on the Mountain' album as their best. Rossington-Collins helped to mend our hearts, put out two cool albums, and paved the way for the later Skynyrd reunion. Warren Haynes has been my favorite guitarist for about the last thirty years. He brings it every night. One thing that can be said without question: Southern Rock kicks ass!!!

Another great show Pete. I first seen Skynyrd play at Cleveland Public Hall in 74. Opening was Mahogany Rush, then Peter Frampton. LS were so great in concert. Also seen them precrash in 76 at Richfield Ohio. On the bill that night was Black Oak Arkansaw, Outlaws, the LS. Two epic concerts.

Susan Russell all good bands that you mention but they are all generally considered country rock especially FBB. Gilded Palace of Sin by FBB is the first country rock album.

Great job Pete, been looking forward to that. After the Allman Brothers my second favourites are the Marshall Tucker Band; so much heart, soul and love in that band's music. That's a big part of what Southern Rock was about. Would love to see a special on those boys sometime. They had great album covers too ! Haven't heard those Charlie Daniels albums so will check them out - thanks for that. Quick mention too for Elvin Bishop who could have snuck in here, and his live album Raisin' Hell could be a contender for the live album wars. He's another big favourite in this little acre...

Black Oak Arkansas were big for me in the early 70's.Killer dual lead players who did lots of harmony guitars. They were just about as big as the Allmans and bigger than any other southern rock band up until Skynyrd surpassed them in the mid 70's.Pete's right in that Jim Dandy's vocals might not be for everyone, but I liked him.Self titled, Raunch and Roll Live,High on the Hog are probably the best of their discography. Similar to Kiss,they sounded better and more raw live.

Seems like BOA had a southern rock formula right there in the beginning with some of the others. I really liked that first LP and their live one too! They had a radio hit as well with Jim Dandy to the Rescue. They faded away while the southern rock thing started to get real big

Three gold albums,1 top 20 single and half a decade of sold out tours,but I guess they didn't age well over time,because they have been all but forgotten, when it comes to southern rock.

I truly believe that Atlanta Rhythm Section were the Toto of Southern Rock as i have thought of them like that always because of their more pop-melodic side, great cool band. And Black Oak Arkansas's best album is X-rated...it has one of their best songs "Strong Enough To Be Gentle". Great melodic bluesy ballad...

I love X-Rated but it also was the beginning of the end for the band. They had been with Atlantic Records and then signed with MCA because of Lynyrd Skynyrd's success with the label and MCA tried to 'slick up' their sound into a more mainstream sound, mainstream as in generic, and that made the band start to lose their raw appeal.

The Atlanta Rhythm Section! They were from the south, but they were studio musicians. They played some music that fit into the southern rock genre, but they were just top rate musicians. Listen to "Silent Treatment" here on KZbin for just a taste of how great they were!

I wanted to hear him mention Rainbow Ride from the million mile reflections album. Its my favourite song of all time and its unlike anything they ever did. Its prog, jazz fusion, ballad, blues rock and absolutely epic.

Greg Allman once asked why it's called Southern Rock when rock music originated from Southerners. He said shouldn't it be called Rock Rock? Very cool. And I agree with Greg.

Thanks for mentioning Wet Willie, which doesn't seem to be a fan favorite based on comments below. Loved them and Elvin Bishop. They both tend to have more of an upbeat, joyful sound compared to other SR bands. A trio of other lesser known bands are Grinderswitch (glad you mentioned), Barefoot Jerry and Heartsfield.

@@larrystrick1862 thanks for your input but I might suggest that southern rock genre is defined more by influences and attitude rather than a physical demographic. For instance, Kansas blended southern rock into their prog regularly.

Great job on this. You could probably go on for another couple of hours on this subject. One possible honorable mention would be the band Junkyard. I don’t remember off hand where they were from but they had the southern rock meets 80’s metal sound to them. The Black Crowes actually opened for them back in 1990 I believe.

Atco for ABB and Idlewild South. Beginnings, too :) Rickey Medlocke was a Cream fan and from what i recall, told family "Someday, i'll be on this label". Blackfoot, Atco. Pretty great. Had a flashback memory of '75 this morning and a hang at a keyboard players house down the street. Went home to grab some albums and hit KSAN. Happened to catch The Outlaws "Green Grass And High Tides'' for the first time . Stopped me in my tracks.

A few of the "old guard" that weren't mentioned: Mother's Finest (Southern rock meets urban funk), Elvin Bishop, Head East, Dwight Twilley (Southern rock meets power pop), Louisiana's LeRoux, Cowboy, plus the Dickey Betts Band album Pattern Disruptive, featuring Warren Haynes sharing lead vocals and lead guitar, with Matt Abts on drums, so they were the roots of Gov't Mule. Two other more recent bands: Screamin' Cheetah Wheelies and Chris Stapleton (he may be classified as country, but he rocks with the best of 'em).

Blackfoot Marauder seriously kicks ass. Every song is excellent. Something that is rare nowadays. I love some of their other stuff too, but that particular album hits home for me going all the way to its release in 1981. Just a heavy album. That's my southern fried rock fix. You have to love their 7th album name Vertical Smiles.:)

The Outlaws were incredible! Hughie Thomasson, Billy Jones and Henry Paul (and later Freddie Salem) formed the legendary Florida guitar army! The most powerful guitar trio in southern rock along with Rossington,Collins and King ( later Gaines) from Skynyrd and Hlubek, Holland and Roland from Molly Hatchet.

Duane Allman and Dicky Betts were two very important characters to me as a 15 year old in 1971. My sister bought the first Allman Brothers Band album and I was floored. I spent hours learning their songs. When I heard Fillmore East I was blown away. I thought Duane Allman was a very original sounding slide guitarist. He was unusual. His phrasing was odd and I loved it. I felt he was innovative to the beginnings of Southern Rock and he was influential to many guitarists that formed Southern Rock bands in the mid to late 70s. I wasn't a fan of Southern Rock. I don't know why it didn't do anything for me. I was really drawn to the Allman Brothers Band which the first 4 albums were outstanding. After Duane Allman died tragically It wasn't the same magic for me. Perhaps it was just him and the way he played that spoiled the hell out of me and when I heard other guitarists attempting that style it didn't feel as authentic to me. The first ZZ TOP album is interesting. It's bluesy!! I always loved Johnny Winter. I seemed to like bands from Texas. Musicians from Texas seemed to play Blues differently and I'm not sure how to describe it..but aspects to the guitar playing of Billy Gibbons, Johnny Winter, and Stevie Ray Vaughn have similarities. There seems to be a distinctive style of guitar playing in Texas that I don't hear in other places. Juicy Lucy were from England...but of course Glenn Ross Campbell was from Arizona..I believe? His Steel Guitar playing was reminiscent of slide guitar playing on an electric guitar. Juicy Lucy often created a Southern Rock vibe in their music. I have all their cds. One of my favorites 😊

Can't really talk about Black Oak without mentioning their backup singer Ruby Starr. She later released a couple of excellent albums with the band Grey Ghost. They're worth checking out.

I dig it, but Ruby wasn't really a back-up singer for the band as much as she was a guest singer who sang with the band. She'd been around and had cut an album or two under the name Ruby Jones when JD and the boys took her under their wing and helped her career. But yeah, 'Burnin' Whiskey' alone should have got her more acclaim. Grey Ghost (Robert E. Lee's nickname the Union soldiers gave him) was a great band but she only recorded one official album. She did a couple solo albums and with her other band 'Grey Starr'.

Loved the video Pete....ex NYer, Part Time Long Islander(Living in FLA since 2001) who LOVED Southern rock...Know ALL these bands you mention...Doc Holliday?! Holy Shit, how many people know them! One band , I'm NOT sure if you mentioned them , was Mothers Finest. Funky, southern sound with a female Singer, Baby Jean, who as co singer on a great Molly song called "Respect me in the Morning". I was a HUUUUGE Molly Hatchet fan....they are ALL dead except for Steve Holland, (hope you're well Steve...keep playing!). Saw the Allmans 3x at the Beacon Theatre in the 90's , 2000's...doesn't get better than that. Saw Dickey Betts and GS at the Southampton College back in the late 70's with my cousin....I was young, but everyone there was digging it! Keep doing what you do!

I definitely would throw Neil Young into that mix, as a trend setter. What he was doing in the late 60's and into the early 70's was very southern rock with some folk and electric mixed in. He also had a song called Southern Man and Alabama after all!

I watched an interview where Artimus Pyle said that drummer Paul Riddle from Marshall Tucker referred him to Skynyrd as a possible replacement for drummer Bob Burns after his departure. Shows you how close all these bands were in the southern rock genre. Amazing video!!!

You did a great job here. Kind of a difficult genre for me to get into. Allman Brothers of course a great jam and blues band, and I think Lynyrd Skynyrd, ZZ Top and the Black Crowes are viewed by most as just amazing rock bands and they go beyond Southern Rock. Check out the Simple man version by Deftones for example. But unless you like some country and boogie rock it's hard to get into Molly Hatchet territory. Still going to check some of your recommendations. And don't forget about Jackyl lol

No More Dirty Deeds by Johnny Van Zant is a great album along with his other albums,all great ..Hard to find a really good copy or Yu Tube upload because it just did not have that much popularity .. 1985 Van Zant is a mid 80s heavy rocker ,not a bad song on it like Midnight Sensation ..You Tube has it .... Listen to Southern Band by Henry Gross,,,that is a mind blowing tune ,he did much more than Shannon ..

First off, someone explain to me why Foghat always ends up on Southern Rock compilations. The real beginnings of Southern Rock was with Lonnie Mack, listen to his 60's albums and you can hear it with his guitar attack. Anyways here a list off the top of my head 1. Allman Brothers Band 2. Great Guitarrist's Duane Allman, Allen Collins, Gary Rossington ! Great Vocals too , Gregg Allman and Ronnie van Zant. Two Great Bands back then in the 70"s !!! Even the Rossington- Collins Band , Love the two Albums from the early 80's ! And of course Johnny Winter (Love his Hard Rockin' Years 1971 to 1976)

Some of the member of ARS got their start as members of the Classics 4 with Dennis Yost (they did "Spooky" and "Traces"). Some of the guys were also session guys on records by B.J. Thomas. Also, after Henry Paul left The Outlaws for the second time, he and Van Stephenson ("Modern Day Delilah") formed a straight-up modern country band named Blackhawk, who had a number of country chart hits in the '90s. Wet Willie's lead singer, Jimmie Hall, was later a touring member of Hank Williams Jr.'s backing band. Re Black Oak Arkansas, David Lee Roth has said that he was a big fan of Jim Dandy Mangrum, and even copied a lot of his old stage look from him.

Hey Pete, Its funny (well, not really) that most of these bands from back in the day, sound MORE Country than most _contemporary_ "Country Music" of today (Pop music with a southern accent). I'm a HUGE fan of Blackfoot, Outlaws, Point Blank, and the 1st 2 and later Molly Hatchet albums, along with all the greats you've mentioned. And most people know ZZ Top for their more popular later years, but those earlier albums are freaking amazing, they f'n rocked!I Really only know the album "Blue and Grey" by Poco (West-coast Country/Western Rock), but it's an excellent album. Robbie Robertson from The Band has some interesting solo albums that are all over the place as far as genres. Another band I need to look more into is "Doc Holiday", and listen to more "Marshall Tucker Band". Later years I became a Rossington Collins Band fan, don't know why I didn't appreciate them more when they debuted.

BTW - Molly Hatchet gives "Frank Frazetta" a brand new audience (as well as "Ken Kelly" and the many albums he had created). Almost forgot that you're a Comic Book/Sci-Fi/Fantasy fan Pete. Grinderswitch is another that I have to look into (that I remember hearing about back in the day) and Hydra. And remember Pete; "Hughie" Thomasson of The Outlaws joined Lynyrd Skynyrd in 1996. "Black Stone Cherry" is awesome, earlier stuff is very heavy. You got a lot of "Southern Sludge" Metal bands as well.

No doubt. I have a friend who is an outstanding musician who showed me some of his rejection letters from various country divisions of record companies. One that stood out basically said that the song writing and "musical prowess" was excellent. But said that their sound was "too retro" and a "throw-back" with their style of vocal harmonies and with their use of steel guitar and fiddle. In other words they are "too country" for country.

A band I would add is Freddie Salem & The Wildcats. Maybe they were more of a hard rock band, but there was definitely a southern rock influence there.

The root of southern southern Rock is considered Hey Jude by Wilson Pickett when he arranged with Duane Allman. Considered a junction where the roots of American Music came together. Blues, Gospel, Rock, Country, Soul, all originating in the South.

Who really exactly knows but Guitar Boogie by Arthur Smith in 1948 is a corner stone of that beginning . Rockabilly ,Carl Perkins Johnny Cash,Jerry Lee Lewis, Eddie Cochran, pretty much is southern rock anyways....Chuck Berry ,he basically was a southerner from Missouri

I would also add that Greg Allman's God Rest His Soul was one of the roots. It showed a new political awareness coming through the music of a Southern white boy's tribute to MLK. A key moment in Southern Rock for me.
