The Steinerburg near Steinach was built around 1200 by the Lords of Steinach. It survived several wars and was long in the possession of the St.Gallen monastery. Why is it a ruin today?

The Steinerburg lies on a spur at the edge of the gorge through which the Steinach flows.
The first castle was built around 1200 by the lords of Steinach on their own property. They were in the service of the bishops of Constance and had already had bailiff's rights and interest people in these areas since the 9th century. Around 1209 they are first mentioned in documents.
At the beginning of the 13th century there were disputes between the Constance Hochstift and the St. Gallen Monastery, which also had possessions in this area. Probably the castle of the Lords of Steinach was also affected. Archaeological findings indicate this.
In written sources a Wilhelm von Steinach is mentioned around 1222 as a servant of the monastery St. Gallen. From this time on, the lordship and castle were under the influence of the abbey.
Around 1230 the castle was probably rebuilt and enlarged at the same time. The Lords of Steinach lived in it until the beginning of the 14th century, before they increasingly lived in the city of St. Gallen. The castle still belonged to them, however.
During the Appenzeller Wars, the castle was conquered by rebels around 1405 and occupied until 1407. After the defeat of the Appenzeller near Bregenz, the castle came back into the possession of the Steinach family. Shortly afterwards, Konrad von Steinach had to sell his property for economic reasons.
In 1432 the Watt family from St. Gallen bought the dominion. They were already owners of Rebstein Castle. In 1481 Ludwig Vogelweider bought the castle and finally in 1577 it passed into the possession of the St. Gallen monastery together with the remaining land.
It remained there until the monastery was dissolved in 1805 and the property was auctioned off by the canton. Today the Steinerburg belongs to the Pfauenmoos Family Foundation of the Barons of Heyl zu Herrnsheim.
The ruin, which was probably separated from the plateau by a moat, consists of a large tower house. This measures 25.7 by 24.2 meters. Three enclosing walls still exist. In these walls there are also Gothic window frames. Unfortunately, parts of the south wall and the entire east wall have fallen into the ravine and therefore cannot be reconstructed exactly. The west and north walls are still about two stories high. The storey above it in half-timbered style, the so-called Obergaden, was demolished in 1833.
There are no references to a ring wall or a castle courtyard.
The ruin was renovated in 1975 under the direction of the Canton of St. Gallen's Monument Conservation Department and is now a popular destination for excursions.
