The first American games wasn't supposed to be held in St. Louis, but in Chicago. There was a lot of back and forth, and in the end it ended up being in St. Louis at the same time as the World Fair. It was a disaster on so many levels, especially the swimming and the marathon.

During the Olympic winter games in 1972 in Sapporo, Japan, Austrian Skier Karl Schranz was disquallified from the games just briefly after he had arrived in Japan, on the allegation of being a secret professional sportsman. The IOC president presented a photography of Schranz wearing a soccer-outfit with a coffee-advert on its back, which as far as we know, Schranz wore for a charity game. So he returned to Austria quite bitter, yet in Vienna he was greeted by a crowd of nearly 100 000 people, celebrating him as if he had won the games single-handedly.

13:20 actually, the IOC awarded the hosting rights for the 1904 Games to Chicago, with the World's Fair in St Louis originally scheduled for 1903, in honor of the centennial of the Louisiana Purchase. However, the organization of the St Louis World's Fair ended up pushing it back a year to 1904, and, not wanting the Olympics to be completely eclipsed by the World's Fair, the two are merged into a single mega event, similar to the 1900 Paris games.

Sadly, Canada still has the distinction of being the only host country to not win a gold medal at their own games, twice the other time being the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. It wasn't until the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver that we finally won gold. Also, I have a very interesting piece of Olympic memorabilia, a Toronto 1996 pin, which was produced for our bid. I got it when I went to the Olympic announcement party at Skydome (now Roger's Centre) here in Toronto in '91, where we lost to Atlanta. I recall Mayor Hazel McCallion (mayor of Mississauga, Ontario, right next to Toronto) tell a reporter that she believes that the games will be known as "The Coca-Cola Games". (Incidentally, I was also at the breakfast party outside of Union Station here in Toronto when we lost to Beijing.)

@@DonMIFC Greeks stayed relatively hemogenous because of the 400 years of occupation of the Ottomans. They werent allowed to marry turks for the most time. So they bewared their culture and their language. Modern "Macedonians" arent Macedonians but slaws who arrived in the 6th century. Most of them are Bulgarians. Tito - the Yugoslawian leader - told the western Bulgarians that they are something special and dont have much in common with their eastern brothers in order to disrupt and split his neighbour (and maybe integrating them into his yugoslawic country). From then on the propaganda in "Macedonia" took off, claiming that the people are decendents of Alexander the Great. Dont forget that Bulgarians also were part of the Axis powers during WW 2 and managed to occupy parts of northern Greece during the war after the Germans arrived. After their independence in the 1990s they were making claims on Greek territory. Macedonian politicians claimed that Thessaloniki should be Macedonian instead of Greek. The tensions between both nations were at a high in the mid 90s. There is also a Greek region in the north west that is called "Macedonia" - which also includes ancient Pella - the birthplace of Alexander. Hence, this is the reason why they dont get along so well. In Greece there are a lot of people still calling the country not Macedonia, but "Republic of Skopje" after their capital city. Unfortunately the "North Macedonian" propaganda manages to disinform an international audience.

Lots of individual athletes featured but 1 missing is Australian Dawn Fraser. Dawn dominated in the pool in Melbourne, Rome and Tokyo and up till Ian Thorpe and Emma McKeon was Australia's most successful swimmer.

Correction of 1984: 4 years after the boycott in 1980, I know West Germans boycotted the Olympics in 1980, but they actually didn't boycott the games in 1984, but instead participated the Olympics since West Germany was a member of the Western Bloc.

People had rough events like 24 stadions in the ancient olympics… today we have breakdance and skateboarding as olympic disciplines😂

both of those are sports, skateboarding is straight up hardcore stuff that requires a lot of body work to be good at, break dancing is an artistic sport, you have to use your body to achieve the best moves. The more accessible these games are the better, the more people care about them.

You might want to recheck your facts regarding the first time gold medals were awarded. Wikipedia has medal tables showing Gold / Silver / Bronze medals awarded from the 1896 (first) games onwards. It even has pictures of the (oddly square) medals awarded to athletes in 1900 Paris, which includes gold medals.
