Finally someone did a proper video about this topic. Thank you ! Some of the scores off the top of my head: 1980-81 regular season 10-4 Calgary 1982-83 regular season 9-4 Calgary 1983 playoffs 9-1 Edmonton 10-2 Edmonton 1983-84 regular season 10-5 Edmonton. Hughes 5 goals, no Gretzky, no Kurri. 9-6 Edmonton 9-2 Edmonton 1984 playoffs 7-4 Edmonton and they were trailing at a critical point. Moog pulled in favor of Fuhr. 1984-85 regular season 6-5 Edmonton. Coffey 4 goals. Tons of power play goals in this one. 1985-86 regular season 9-3 Calgary late season. Tons of power play goals in this one. A serious game changer here as Calgary's only win in 85-86 against Edmonton was this game. 1986-87 regular season 3-1 Calgary. Ghosts of the 1986 playoffs lingered. Edmonton had a 1-6-1 record that year against Calgary. 1987-88 regular season 7-4 Calgary 1988 playoffs 6-4 Edmonton. Four game sweep against the best team in the league. Sounds like Edmonton beating themselves again, doesn't it ? Calgary did FINISH first and not Edmonton LOL.

Great video. Probably should have included the Talbot-Smith goalie fight game on the history part. That game was a hoot.

Yeah man, whats even crazier is that we traded goalies that season. Like wtf 😂 That whole game was absolutely insane.

I was lucky enough to grow up as a teenager in Alberta in the 80s. It was the greatest hockey in the history of the NHL. Calgary had a great team the entire time but the Oilers were always just a little better. The Flames finally got over the hump because of Steve Smith's own-goal. To those that never witnessed this stuff, I can't really describe how wild it all was.

Beautiful video but. I’m so blessed I was born in Edmonton in the same hospital my Dadio was born in! So glad we beat the Flames. Interesting how the 15 goal game happened just over 30 years later instead of the the 80,s lol. This must been a hard video for you to make since by judging just on your profile pictures your a Flames fan, unless you put that picture just in respect for Johnny Hockey which is amazing of you to do!

Wow. This was an amazing insightful summary of a great rivalry in the NHL. While I am an Oilers fan and I do reside in Calgary, I have nothing but respect for the Flames. As long as the Flames can build around Wolf, they have a great future. Also, I was wondering if you are somehow related to another Flames fan with a great KZbin channel, Jonathan Hawkey. I mean both your narration voices are great and are similar in telling great stories. Keep up the good work!

It used to be The Battle of Alberta, now it's The Slight Disagreement of Alberta. From April 4 '86 - Jan 7 '89 Calgary lost only 5 out of the 22 regular season games vs Edmonton but lost 7 of the 11 playoff games they played in that same span.

The WHA did not fold, it merged with the NHL. As well, there were a lot of heated battles in the juniors between the old Edmonton Oil Kings and Calgary Centennials. Once, when the owners of the Oil Kings and Centennials realized how much money they were making, they decided to change the Best-of-7 series (tied 3-3 at the time) to a best of nine. This happened as the two teams were driving to Edmonton for game 7.

A lot of 9 and 10 goal games back then. Most goaltenders were just destroyed. But I have to say this, it could have been worse. On most nights, goaltenders made at least 2 or 3 times more quality saves that nowadays. There were some exceptions to this rule. Here they are, where both teams were levelled. 1983-84 Vancouver 10-9 over Minnesota Edmonton 12-9 over Minnesota Edmonton 10-7 over Vancouver 1985-86 Edmonton 12-9 over Chicago Toronto 11-9 over Edmonton 1987-88 Calgary 10-7 over Los Angeles 1989-90 Calgary 10-7 over Detroit 1990-91 Calgary 10-8 over Quebec All games regular season. Highest scoring playoff game: Los Angeles 10-8 over Edmonton in 1982.

Goalies back then also faced many more powerplay shots than today's goalies. We only average 6 powerplays per game today whereas in the 80's and 90's the average was 8-11 powerplays per game depending on the year.
@Mike-l7y5y

@@dannycarlow8204 You're right. Also some games were ridiculous, especially against the Flyers. The opponent could get as many as 11 or 12 power plays. Would often score 3 or 4 power play goals, even on Ron Hextall.

Good video. I’d retitle it and make it less Alberta based so you broader appeal. Something like “History of Hockeys most VIOLENT rivalry,”

Had the oilers not had gretzky, Calgary, and maybe even the Kings would have won a few more cups
@dannycarlow8204
@dannycarlow8204 Ай бұрын
I guess that depends on where he did end up playing. If he played in Quebec or Long Island, I'm not sure anyone else would have won a cup in the 80's. The stat I find mind boggling about Edm and Cal is that from 84-85 to 90-91, six Oilers players had thirteen 100+ point seasons and two 200+ point seasons. In that same seven years the Flames had five players each score one single 100+ point season. Calgary outscored Edmonton by four goals over those seven years. In 85-86 the Oilers led the league in scoring while Calgary was second. Wayne outscored the top three Flames scorers combined by 4 points. If Wayne never played, Calgary most definitely would have been the league's powerhouse between the Isles' and Pens' reigns for about six or seven years. My guess is that they would have won three or four cups.

Back in the 1980s, I was a Flames fan, and hated the Oilers. Regardless of Edmonton's success, I hated them. 1986 and 1989 were satisfying times for me. Today, I hardly watch hockey, and don't have a favorite team. I still hate the Oilers, though.

Oilers and WHA teams were raped by the NHL upon the merger, could only protect a few stars, Oil lost solid d men Colin Campbell, Paul Shmyr, Dave Langevin. All good, we kept Gretz and Sather built a team around him and ran roughshod through the league that decade. The ultimate scorecard should be. Edmonton 5 cups Calgary 1
