When I moved to Anaheim California in September 1973, I went to Disneyland 8 times the first year. When the crowds were really bad & my feet were tired, I always used a combination of the train, People Mover, Monorail & the Aerial Tram Cars that went thru the Matterhorn to get around different areas in the Park. I could also easily see how long the lines were for all the desired attractions . After learning the ropes & shortcuts pretty quickly, I figured out a better way to get inside with less hassle. When the Monorail stopped at the Disneyland Hotel, I would park there for the day & buy my tickets right there at the Hotel one hour before opening time & then zip into Disneyland on the very first train of the day ahead of all the crowds! At the day's end, I would take the Monorail back to the Hotel, get in my car & drive home..so easy! I loved riding in the very front car of the Monorail as it gave you a different riding experience being able to see/ look down directly in front of the track. I remember many of the now defunct attractions including GE Carousel Theater, America Sings, Bear Country Jamboree, Mr. Toad's Wild Ride for the kiddies, etc. Walt Disney died in 1966 so he was only gone 7 years when I arrived & his creative presence was still very fresh. I really don't like alot of the cruddy updates that just seem commercialized to stay current but really aren't innovative or in keeping with his original spirit. Still in all, it really is an amazing place. Thank you Dale and Karyn for another super & informative video. You two are just a couple of senior teenage delinquents out on the town having a blast! If you ever land in jail, I will gladly post your bail! Keep up the fun!

Disneyland did not have a Mark VI, Mark VI's are still in service at WDW. (Note: Disneyland monorails ride on a 20" wide beam, WDW monorails ride on a 26" wide beam and thicker to support larger trains and more weight). BTW, you would be surprised how many people call Disney World, Disneyland. I'm sure it goes the other way around also. As Disney fans, we wonder how they could make a mistake like that, but remember, a tourist is not so enamored with Disney parks as we are.

Love the channel, folks. It's so fun to tag along on your adventures. A couple of corrections: The Mark IV and Mark VI monorails ran at Walt Disney World in Florida. They are larger than the Disneyland monorails, more like the size of the Seattle Alwegs, have controls at both ends, and air conditioning. Mark IV monorails Lime and Coral were the newest, and when the Mark VI trains arrived at WDW, Lime and Coral were sold to Vegas, and ran for a short time. Then Vegas bought new 4-car trains from Bombardier, and those are the ones you see today. I drove the Mark IV monorails back in 1987. That was a fun job.

Cool job!!! Didn't know that. I saw the trains in Salt LAke while they were being reworked for Vegas. Thy said they were from Disneyland. I guess Disney World instead.

The Mono Rail system at WDW was designed more for transportation than a "ride", the system links several Disney hotels to several of the other Disney parks making it very easy to get around. At several places along the routes there are several switches to a short extension, I'm thinking for future expansion of the system. At one point years ago, rumor had it WDW had planned to extend the system east to Orlando's International Airport but for what ever reason that never happened. Would have pretty cool tho and safer, the rental agencies at the airport will rent to anyone with proper ID whether they were just 'poured off the plane' or are stone sober. Another interesting video, thanks Dale and Karyn!!

46619TAB Hey, Terry! I would like to see the monorail extended from WDW to Orlando International.. It would make things much easier for tourists... Especially folks such as myself, who get completely lost at Orlando International! My plan didn’t include a WDW visit...... But it could have! My first monorail ride was in Seattle. Again... My poor feet had completely given out on me.. Good to hop on and ride to my destination! Lots of fun, and I enjoy riding the monorail! Thanks for watching!

Karyn Felix-Angell - Back in the day when Disney began WDW Orlando was a sleepy little town known for its surrounding cattle ranches and citrus groves*. Since WDW opened the Magic Kingdom followed by the other WDW parks and WDW Resort Hotels, Orlando has been attracting other theme parks, shopping, restaurants and residents. It's grown to become a world famous tourist metropolis! Looking at a map of the area at this point in time the only way I can see extending the monorail to Orlando International would be thru the 'back door' by following the Central Florida Greenway to 527A. Even then the cost would be astronomical! On a flight down a few years ago, there were two guys across the aisle from us. By the time the plane landed in Orlando they were ripped and every one in business class knew they were headed to WDW for a week of golf. The last time we saw them they were being poured off the plane BUT we encountered them two more times, once at a rental car counter and again as they flew by us on the Bee Line headed for I4 and WDW. The monorail line would have really nice!! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walt_Disney_World_Monorail_System *Side note. [back story] My mom's parents met, fell in love and married in Des Moines Iowa in 1923 and began planning a move to Chicago, his goal was to become a master carpenter. They had four kids in two batches, my first aunt was born in Des Moines in 1926 and my mom was born in Chicago in 1927. Another aunt and uncle were born in Chicago in 1933 and 1934. GFather achieved his goal and went on to build new homes and commercial spaces. The family survived the first depression and then WWII. My first aunt was a 'dance hall girl' for the USO where she met the man of her dreams. After the war they were married in Chicago in 1947 and promptly moved to Orlando, they both hated the cold of winter, and his goal was to become a master electrician. Along the way he achieved his goal and eventually went in with a friend to buy into a citrus grove/processing plant a few miles south west of town. Things were going well and in the mid 60's the business began getting offers from several entities to buy the business out. Figuring land speculators they waited for the best offer and then sold. The best offer came from Reedy Creek Ranch Corporation. www.wdwradio.com/2005/02/wdw-history-101-how-to-buy-27000-acres-of-land-and-no-one-noticeq/ A while later when he realized who he sold to my uncle was so impressed with the way Walt Disney Corp had run the land deals that he applied for an electrician's position and was hired. He worked on the construction of the Magic Kingdom and worked on the monorail system briefly before he retired.

Being that the Disneyland Monorail was originally built as a RIDE before expanding to go to the hotel it was build at 5/8 scale. This came back to bite Walt when he tried selling the system for general transportation around Orange and LA counties. The politicians couldn't get it through their heads that the trains being offered them would be bigger.

Thank you very much for the video! I love the Disney Monorails! The Mark IV and VI trains were used at Walt Disney World and not at Disneyland like the others. The Mark VI ran from 1972-1991 and the Mark VI started running in 1989.They are taller than the Disneyland trains and have control cabs at each end. 2 Mark IV trains were sold to Las Vegas and ran from 1995 to 2002, when they were replaced with 9 new built Bombardier M-VI trains based on the Disney mark VI.

What a wonderful history, Dale and Karyn, that you presented of the Disneyland Monorail system! But as such avid train buffs, both of you surprisingly missed to mention anything about the Santa Fe Railway's sponsorship of the early park monorails. Walt may have funded the original development of Disneyland Monorail on his own dime, but Santa Fe paid dearly for the right to sponsor it on an ongoing basis under its own name. On that old black-and-white photo about which Karyn comments that the Disneyland Monorail's tailfins resembled those on a classic Cadillac, something else can be seen on the side of the monorail if you look carefully: a classic Santa Fe circle-cross logo inside a dark square. The monorail was considered a part of the Disneyland Santa Fe Railway just as were the steam-powered trains that encircled the theme park. The Santa Fe Railway sponsored the Disneyland Railroad and Monorail system all the way into the early 1970s when Santa Fe, like so many other railroads, permanently ceased rail passenger operations in America. After that, the Disneyland Railroad and Monorail no longer wore the Santa Fe logo. I am both a Disneyland and Santa Fe buff. I grew up in Tustin, California, during the 1960s, just 15 minutes away from Disneyland by car. Every year during the 1960s, my father would take our family to Disneyland on a free pass when the park closed to everyone except aerospace workers (and their families) who were employed by Southern California's defense contractors. I relished seeing Santa Fe logos throughout Disneyland from the same railway that served orange growers and other industries around my small town of Tustin. Is it any wonder why I model the Santa Fe Railway today in N scale? -from Tom Pilling

Another great video! It's interesting how Disney used the monorail to get around all the parks in Florida as well. You can go from Disney World to Epcot to the Gigantic water park to the Animal Kingdom. It's interesting that you Fleetingly mentioned the Matterhorn in Disney Land. The Matterhorn is absent in Disney World, but they have in Animal Kingdom at W. D. W. a south Asian themed section complete with giant fruit bats or Flying Foxes, Indian Tigers a train through Africa. The coolest, neatest though was the environment that transitioned through the Himalayan foothills into the Himalayan Mountain with Expedition Everest. Not having ridden the Matterhorn but having ridden Expedition Everest I can't compare rides. I can say that Expedition Everest is wild. You zip and zing around and through this big mountain enveloped roller coaster all the while being chased by shadow images of the illusive Yeti which is done mainly with shadows except for a brief moment when you see this image of a tall muscular up right manlike creature with reddish hair. Your mind has this image captured in it of what we refer to here in the states as a blob squatch because you only see the Yeti for a brief moment that's almost not enough to register. It is still a cool ride literally and is worth the what on a hot summer's day because it's air conditioned to simulate the frozen Himalayan Mountains. It's also funny to see this man made mountain setting out in the middle of a really flat Florida swampland. Thanks Walt Disney for making it possible for the other half of the United States to visit a Disney theme park also thanks for this channel it's really neat.
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
THANKS!!! They have a Yeti in the Matterhorn as well. AND you get a good look at him several times. When the ride opened, the inside of the mountain was open, you could see the steel framework, even the construction equipment still stored inside!!!! Then they added the Yeti and finished up the inside. They had the sky tram thing that went right through the mountain. In the beginning again it we all unfinished inside. Then later it went right bast the Yeti do you really got a good look at him. Like 15 feet tall!!! The hole in the mountain is still there, just no skyway.

I remember riding the Monorail from the Disney Hotel where they were having a Model Railroad NMRA convention. Quite a joy for a very young man. ANother great video! A couple fo points of clarification: Disneyland monorails have been the Mark 1, 2, 3, 5 and 7. Mark 4s were Disney Worlds first monorails and those are the ones that first made it to Vegas when Disney World got the larger Mark 6s. Disneyland’s Mark 5s went to the more futuristic designs of Disney World’s Mark 4 but smaller (Disneyland monorails are about 40% shorted and smaller scale). The present Disneyland Mark 7s are a throwback to the originals design. Originally they only operated within the Tomorrowland area and then a couple years later were expanded to the Disneyland Hotel, making the track 2.5 miles long. That Disneyland Hotel station platform is the same one that in 2001 was converted to the Downtown Disney (entertainment and shopping area) station. The monorail does not stop at California Adventure but does go over a portion of it and then through the Grand Californian Hotel and on to Downtown Disney. A side note: I have a photo my dad took in 1959 of the Matterhorn not yet open and still some construction being done!

+ToyMan *I've first-hand experience with one of the trains this vid, in North State:* The Viewliner was actually used for a short at the Oakland Zoo, Knowland Park, Oakland, CA, USA. Probably purchased it from Walt Disney Company after it was withdrawn from Tomorrowland service. The Alweg monorail is still in service, albeit with new end cars and a re-route to serve the California Adventure in addition to Disneyland Hotel. When I drove the Autopia, it more resembled a European expressway than an Interstate. Time 12:28 The Goodyear® PeopleMover™ was operating in the 1980's and probably decommissioned after Northridge; Corporation plans for new features coinciding with track damage sustained in the earthquake and regulatory changes which would have forced some expensive retrofits to return the PeopleMover to service.
@karynfelix-the-Cat6 жыл бұрын
Earthquakes are always a concern.. and the discontinuation of some of the rides and other attractions after a quake is necessary. Just looking at the monorail there at Disneyland, makes one wonder..... But, I am sure that has been very well planned out in the event of a shaker! I am thinking that Disney may have to reinvent the People Mover to some extent, as the park has grown in size, right along with the multitudes of guests visiting the park. The newest trend seems to be people with walking difficulties, renting those motorized chairs. That's fine... But the whole park is a sea of those chairs zipping around! So dangerous! Both Dale and I have problems walking.. Bad knees and hips.. But don't want to be encumbered by a motorized chair. But it is difficult for both of us to have to literally jump out of the way. The multitudes of strollers are interesting too.. and everyone in a hurry to visit the next event. Not to be negative.. But there has to be a better way for people to move about the park... Some sort of mass transit people mover!!

Funny, but my very first ride at Disneyland back in 1964 when I was age 7 was on the Steamtrain! My dad had my familty ride it first, circling the park to try and give us a feel for the park and places we'd all like to visit ahead of time! right next to thevStation was the "Madhatters Hat boutique" an old fashioned street peddlers cart wagon where dad bought me my Mary Poppins straw hat that had wired flowers springing up from the brim and came with my own little umbrella! he got my sister a Goofy hat and himself and my mom Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears we all wore for the next 2 days we would be visiting there at Disneyland staying at the Anaheim Motor Inn 3 miles away! Then we went inside Sleeping Beauties Castle right there at the park's entrance and train depot, a place more magical to me now looking back, as a certain short little man who introduced himself to me as "Mel Blanc" dressed in a linen suit, told me "he liked my hat" and "would I like to have my caricature drawn?" who greeted me there in the gift shop! I told him that I had to ask my daddy first" and s9 that's how me and my family came to follow Mel up the winding stairs behind the scenes of Sleeping Beauty's Castle to a small room painted a salmony orange color, to be drawn our caricatures by none other than Disney artists there and in particular, by Mel myself, as well as he drew my dad, too! Mel drew me as "Mary Poppins"-- "floating over the steamtrain ride up in its billowing steamplume smoke, as well as over the Monorail and Matterhorn and Castle, wearing my hat holding onto my umbrella and tapestry carpet bag I was so impressed by, as well as his caricature of my dad at his job, "throwing buckets of paint over the cars with a smile wearing his striped coveralls dad described to Mel, on the assembly line in Final Paint & Trim at General Motors Fairfax Assembly BOP in Kansas City Kansas! my dad was so impressed, too! anothervcoupke of Disney artists drew my sister as "Goofy's "Girlfriend" and my mom at her typewriter as a Schoolboard Secretary as her keys literally "flew" off the typewriter and right onto the paper. as he drew my mom's hair in a mess as she typed, but "perfectly coiffed" at the results!" My experience with Mel changed my life and set my course for my future as an artist myself! seeing all of your scenes behind the scenes here and Monorail ride experience, reminded me of my own marvelous experience at Disneyland as it originally was! I was torn between the modernity of loving the Monorail and still loving my steam trains of old, both of which I can still go there to ride today! I would miss the Captain Nemo's "Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea" Sumarine ride there though, as the LIVE Mermaids swimming around are now a memory of my past, I also wanted to become! loved your video here!

It's amazing how many "artists" are at Disneyland today! As mentioned in earlier shows.. We were there for Christmas with the whole family. Our son-in-law took our granddaughter to have a artists sketch done of her and another cousin... Just a simple sketch, and that cost $45 dollars!! I think it was on a napkin! LOL! I should have stayed in art school! LOL!

Actually Disneyland Monorail has a station in Disneyland and Downtown Disney near the The Disneyland Hotel

Yup. Not California Adventure. And now they are planning to change that but I understand the plan has changed several times.

Be sure to visit the website (and FB page and KZbin Channel) of "The Monorail Society". Many years ago, I helped TMS founder Kim Pedersen build his Norcal backyard monorail out of wood, that you could ride on! FYI, just yesterday (1/13) there is talk (FB "Disney and More" page) of Disney wanting to retire the EPCOT monorail line. Side note; the Alweg Seattle line is full size, and Disneyland's Alweg inspired line is 7/8th scale track and trains. The noses of the Mk. IV, V and VI trains were designed by Imagineer George McGinnes, influenced by the nose of the Lear Jet. Nice video! :)

The Monorails running in Las Vegas right now where built for Vegas. The two Walt Disney World Monorails that used to run in Vegas have been retired.

This makes me want to research about the old monorail at CalExpo, the track is still there. I don’t know when the last time a train ran. Edit: I guess it does still run, there’s videos from just a few years ago on here.

They turned D'land's people mover into the Rocket Rods about 1999 or so. The high speed vehicles damaged the elevated track structure and was shut down after about 2 years. I rode it once. It was not an E ticket!
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Wow didn’t know.
@DRGW4856 жыл бұрын
Additionally Rocket Rods was terribly unreliable and the vehicles would only fit 5 people at a time. More often than not it was broken down and after 2 years it was permanently shuttered. Not really that fun anyway. The people mover was more enjoyable and they got rid of the cool circle vision 360 show for the loading area. Now the loading area is Buzz Lightyear which actually is a cool ride.

DRGW485 that’s cool. Wish I had seen are ridden it. Love to see the old track. Good memories. Fun ride. And a great visit in 1967 was made way better .

Not sure if this is the reason for the demise of the People Mover, but there are a number of references on various sites referring to it as the "People Maker" on HS Grad Nights. Seems that it was a great place to take your Honey at night and be alone without the ever-watchful eyes of the security cameras.

Monorails have a difficulty switching routes compared to a railway
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Thats for sure. The biggest problem they have is that they are designed to be an elevated railway. And they are affordable compared to other railways above the street. But the don't do at grade well. Just gets closer to the ground but same cost. Way more expensive. And they don't do under the street at all.

I was there in 58 but not again until 72 so it was old school by then.
@williamthethespian6 жыл бұрын
It's got to boil down to the cost factor of a monorail. Installation, maintenance, etc.
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
It seems to be the cost of ground level vs elevated. On monorail the rail is also the support system. So way cheeper. BUT at ground level, monorail is still elevated. Is just is by nature. So way more expensive. So it just depends on the installation. ALSO as there is so much light rail now, the equipment is off the shelf. Not so with monorail.

A cool as those aerotrains look, I hear they were remarkably crap. They were basically bus chassis stuck together on light rail trucks. By all accounts loud, road rough and generally unpleasant. Such a shame considering how cool they looked.
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Sort of a demo train. I think one still lives. I think....
@brianstraight93336 жыл бұрын
Apparently parts of both survive, one in St. Louis and one in Green Bay. Neither of them still have all their cars.
@royreynolds1086 жыл бұрын
The Aerotrains went to the Rock Island which used them as the Peoria Rocket from Chicago to Peoria. Nobody liked them because they were hard to maintain, noisy, hard riding, and shared trucks between cars so if something happened to a car the whole train had to be sidelined. I learned this from a RI mechanical department employee I met in 1966 while working in Kansas City, KS.
