Ok, that was a wonderful presentation on the Palantiri, but I have to think that -- at least once in a while -- they would be used for a kind of "prank call": 1st - contact another Palantir owner so they are seeing through your stone. 2nd - roll your stone down a bowling alley into the pins. 3rd - run behind the ball to keep the connection open, while their viewpoint is spinning madly around them 4th - call out cheesy taglines or puns, like "So, does that turn your world?" or "It's all about to come crashing down around you!" 5th - this will "magically" discover if they really do have a sense of humor... and a strong stomach.

Another great video and I think I've enjoyed nearly all of them so far. The Palantiri are certainly intriguing! At their base, they're a Tolkienesque crystal ball of sorts and they have some key functions in Lord of the Rings. I had forgotten that some of the stones had essentially less capability and glad that you highlighted that. To me, the neatest illustrations of the seeing stones always surrounds how characters interact with them. They're the key to the Saruman-Sauron semi-alliance and it seems clear to me that they must've communicated before Saruman's forces attacked Rohan in earnest. Pippin surreptitious use of one really drives the plot. It's also interesting that it just had to be Pippin! When he looks into it, Sauron thinks he's seeing the Ring bearer. Subsequently, he speeds up his plans and so Aragorn finds himself breaking away from the group and taking the Paths of the Dead. The moment when Gandalf hands it to Aragorn, with some warnings of course, it is one of the many "Arthurian" moments of LotR. Aragorn's use is the most interesting to me. He simply does not immediately gaze into it. He changes into what must've been more "kingly" attire, retires to a place by himself, and reveals the stone. It was a struggle but eventually, he wrenches control of it from Sauron and so sees his plans. It's one of the times where Aragorn, through his actions, marks himself as a very special character and the best among men. Denethor has also been using one and we don't seem to know as much about what he saw but it seems clear that Sauron's been manipulating him for quite some time. Sauron allowed Denethor to see how ready Mordor was for war and who knows what Sauron was able to see. It culminates in a Denethor who, having already guessed who Aragorn really was years and years ago, also becomes hopeless in Gondor's chances in an all-out war. The Palantir at Minas Tirith helps make him into the worst possible leader Gondor could have. Thanks for sharing and please keep these coming--very enjoyable and thought provoking!

I really enjoyed this video, I've actually been waiting for it. The rock of Anor caught my attention because of the fact that it's damaged by the fire easily despite being almost indestructible. Plus, I'm wandering if it'd be likely to find the missing Palantiri using the other ones. Palantiri are, without any doubt, fascinating artefacts.

The damage is not so much physical as it is metaphysical- Denethor exerted so much of his power of will into the stone he permanently set it to 11 and bricked it.

1 - The initial poem makes me wonder if it was inspired by/derived from 'I Saw Three Ships' 2 - The Palantiri are likely a direct inspiration for Maerlyn's Rainbow in Dark Tower; I can also see them as a partial inspiration for Harry Potter's Mirror Of Erised, with the potential to become lost while gazing into it. 3 - I'd like to see a video by you about Denethor; While John Noble did a magnificent job, the film could not capture the character's complexity, particularly with how the varying degrees of Numenorean blood affected him, his sons and Aragorn.

[Thule]. Sauron, fearful of falling again for lack of knowledge, obtained the Ithil stone and entered it resulting in unmatched knowledge--enlightenment. This bound him to the stone just as he had been bound to the one ring and the humanoid form he took before the Last Alliance defeated him. He thought this knowledge would give him enough control over the relatively ignorant being of Middle Earth to enslave them. As other authors during the early 20th century, Tolkien uses this and other motifs to warn against the occult movements, the ones largely responsible for the WW in their lust for knowledge and power, just as Sauron and Saurman were responsible for the War of the Ring.

@SantomPh
@SantomPh 3 жыл бұрын
You don't need an iron will just to use it , like any automated tool the work is done the moment you "boot up". You do need an Iron Will to wrest full control of it from a domineering mind like Sauron who can probe you mercilessly. Luckily he ran into Pippin rather than Gandalf, so Sauron got nothing of value. Denethor never lost control of the Anor Stone for the same reason, he has an iron will and is also the rightful user as the Ruling Steward.

With Laptops, tablets or smartphones in conjunction with Skype and KZbin today we have our own Palantírs. Even better when you think about it as ours have audio. I bet Tolkien didn't see that coming! :-)

Another great reference book is the Complete Guide to Middle-Earth by Robert Foster, a revised version released after the release of the Silmarillion. I don't know if it is still in print, I've had mine for close to 40 years.

Excellent videos, you should do videos on the races of elves, succession of kings of each elvin race, Númenorians and the Kings of Arnor and Gondor. Also you should do videos on the chieftains of the Dúnedain.

Knowledge is power and knowing where your allies and enemies are and what they're thinking/doing is a huge advantage. The exclusivity of the Palantiri to the elite of Middle Earth/Arda sadly underlines the notion that these were instruments of control and domination. After all, what would a powerful noble do with the power of seeing into his subject's thoughts and watching them from afar? And since there was a hierarchy amongst the stones, that notion is further underlined.

It's a crystal ball... sometimes able to see into the future, but really was for seeing far distances. Kind of like Skype or cell phones today. Not necessarily "lording over" anyone. But a faster than signal networks to transmit messages quickly over long distances. How one uses technology or fantasy-ology is what determines evilness... other than the one ring. That is pure evil since its essentially most of Sauron's twist evil doing spirit. The ring's a dick, and like a dick it can grow and shrink... and it betrayed Isildur, growing and falling off his finger, exposing his position to Orcs who quickly killed him. Some objects are people or beings stuck inside them. The one ring is one of them. So those objects are inherently evil as there's an evil person/being inside of it.

the stones had an internal mechanism that allowed only those with a right to use them. Hence unless deputised by the king someone would beed great strength to use it

@@SantomPh Also you can use shrouding technique to stop people from spying you using Palantir, how this was achieved no one know being long forgotten.

Feanor is a truly enormous figure among the Noldor and the palantiri were his creations - trinkets made in his apprenticeship in the tutorship of the Valar. He stands, in my mind as one of Tolkien's changes in the thread of the song. What do you think? Feanor stands at the gate of science and magic.

i am encouraged by your concluding thoughts.i agree that we use insight and communication for power and Manipulation over others and that this world would be a better place if we could use it for reflection and Inspiration.i think These are themes that Tolkein does so well to present his Readers..one example is....the scouring of the Shire can draw many parallels to the industrial revolution

Hold up, 9:46, this is only in the movie that Saruman shows the Palantir to Gandalf in the Fellowship of the Ring. Am I wrong? In the books it is a pretty big "A-ha!" moment for Gandalf when Wormtongue chucks the Palantir, and Gandalf finally comprehends the connection that had existed between Orthanc and Barad-Dur. Yoystan, you are the undisputed man, and do such great work! If I didn't love the heck out of these videos I wouldn't bother commenting and bringing this up.

These are great videos you do on LOTR, very detailed and informative stuff. Any chance you would consider doing a character history for Celebrimbor? As a more "casual" fan of LOTR who has only read the main trilogy (and The Hobbit many years ago) but none of the other accompanying texts like the Silmarillion, it would be really interesting to see you work your magic on a video that shows how Celebrimbor's background in the original lore differs from his story in the Shadow of Mordor/War games. But perhaps there's not enough info on that character to justify dedicating a full video to him.
