I really appreciate you highlighting how helpful and friendly Ultra Magnus is to Rodimus Prime in the cartoon. It really points out how out of character he was in that what if comic from IDW, Transformers: Deviations. Magnus was just constantly hard on Hot Rod for no reason, treating him as a major screw up, even when he didn't do anything wrong. He definitely felt more like a voice for the author's dislike of Hot Rod, and part of the reason why this story reads like fan fiction.

I do love Magnus. Him and Rodimus make a great duo and I like the early 2000s idea in R.I.D. and Dreamwave to make him Optimus' brother it added a little something to both their characters. My favorite version of him is defiantly the Animated version because that whole show was an amazing reimagining of everything that is Transformers instead of just rehashing G1 like most modern stuff does and it's a awesome toy compatible with Bulkhead's Headmaster helmet and had that fun Roadbuster recolor which may have been made only to keep a trademark, but I love off color figures so I'll always take a new one.

In the Transformers Legends manga Ultra Magnus is revived to help fight the time travelling future Galvatron that first appeared in issue #78 of the US Marvel comic, officially named 'Galvatron II' to tell him apart from the other time traveling Galvatron from the UK comic; Galvatron II is a favorite of Japanese writers for filling plot holes from before the movie made it over there. Legends being a comedy, the first thing he does after being revived is criticize the Headmasters for his method of burial.

Ultra Magnus has always been my favorite. I still have my G1, which has the missing paint, windshield and plastic tires (18:08). Up until now, I always thought that version was the first release of the toy, not the second.

The rubber tires were only available for the first issue of the toy in early 1986. By the end of the year plastic wheels were the norm. I've seen a sealed example with the mail in poster offer which would have been a late summer/fall 1986 premium. Magnus had some very interesting variations. You had: 1. rubber tires/painted heads 2. plastic wheels/painted heads 3. unpainted head but painted mask/plastic wheels 4. plastic wheels, both heads unpainted and lack of chrome and loss of windshield. Its not known if the first 3 were available solely in 1987 or as running changes throughout 1986 but the final variation would have been the 1987 release. It was said that Kaybee toys carried Ultra Magnus without the windshield as an exclusive as a way to sell the toy at a much lower retail price, but I've never seen documentation to prove this. You still see the windshield/lack of chrome and paint magnus toys listed from time to time as Kaybee exclusive.

@6:30 I noticed recently when I watched my Blu-ray of Transformers the movie that the animation of Ultra Magnus putting the matrix into his chest compartment is very badly edited. It shows him put it in three times. It's almost like he tries to put it in once screws it up and tries two more times. I don't think that's the intention. It looks like an editing problem where three shots of the same thing were included.

I heard their intent was to show it didn't fit properly, and that he wasn't the 'chosen one.' The animation doesn't do a great job of showing that though. The comic goes the complete opposite way by having it fit and his eyes light up with power.

Like I mentioned on your KZbin community page, my favourite version of Magnus is definitely the one in the Marvel UK comics, so thank you for giving both him and the comics themselves so much well-deserved praise here - as you can see in the following extract from the classic 'Target 2006', his rivalry with Galvatron was truly the stuff of legends, yes...? Galvatron: '...How many times must I beat you before you realise the futility of further struggle? Does your pathetic Autobot Code demand sacrifices? Must I destroy you to stop you...?!' Ultra Magnus: 'Yes...' not to mention this later example from 'Vicious Circle': Galvatron: '...You should have stayed dead, Autobot! This just means I've got to kill you all over again...!' Ultra Magnus: 'Thanks...but one death per day is my limit...!'

I don't have a toy of Ultra Magnus, but he (the original one) has always been my favorite Autobot from the 86 movie, my 2nd favorite Autobot after Jetfire, and one of my personal heroes ever. There are too many of things about Magnus that make him both aspirational and relatable to me, like his humility (even if he doesn't want to admit it, he is an effective leader, in a less demanding capacity), his role as both the second-in-command and mentor to Rodimus Prime, his courage, and his selflessness, always ready to sacrifice himself to save his friends from bigger threats.

- Orion Pax was rebuilt into Optimus Prime - Ariel was rebuilt into into Elita-1 - Magnum was rebuilt into Ultra Magnus - Dion was never rebuilt into anyone Alpha Trion himself tells us that he only has enough parts to rebuild Magnum OR Dion, but then never tells us which one he rebuilds. Hasbro eventually outright directly confirmed that Dion was never rebuilt into any other robot, which is then the last piece of information we need to know that Magnum was the robot who became Ultra Magnus (and...I mean...duh, that's obviously the reason Magnum was designed.) If Dion was rebuilt into anyone, it would be Huffer - a robot that: - shares Dion's colors - essentially looks like Optimus Prime/Ultra Magnus - except about half the size of Optimus/Magnus (almost as if Alpha Trion didn't have enough parts to rebuild him as a full-size Optimus/Magnus-style robot) - has a seemingly innate role as a helper/sidekick minion for Optimus, almost as if he was built for that purpose at the same time.... This then streamlines the logic, where Orion and Ariel were rebuilt into super versions of their original designs using the same colors, and so was Magnum, .....rather than Dion inexplicably gaining a radically different design and color scheme that matched Magnum for some reason. Related, but technically a separate matter, Optimus Prime and Ultra Magnus SHOULD be acknowledged as brothers ins EVERY continuity. ESPECIALLY all the ones where Magnus is a white Optimus with armor. They both have the same "father" who rebuilt them, and they're twins. It's ludicrous and outright BIZARRE that the only continuity that recognizes them as brothers is RID Ultra Magnus - the only continuity where they're WILDLY different designs. 🤦‍♂ Even Animated Magnus looks like he's essentially just Animated Optimus wearing armor. Plus, it makes sense that their father built two ultimate champion super robots, but he only had ONE Matrix Of Leadership, so he gave the other one the Magnus Armor instead, so they each gained a unique super upgrade. But I guess MAYBE that then makes it slightly awkward that Elita-1 is technically then Optimus' sister....? But who cares? She's not REALLY. It's not like she's even a pink Opimus Prime robot. Meanwhile.....Dion/Huffer is just lucky Alpha Trion scrounged together enough spare parts to rebuild him at all.

Watching the Hasbro cartoons, to me it felt like Rodimus Prime was the young and dumb "2nd lieutenant" bumbling his way through leadership simply because of the rank he held while Ultra Magnus was the "sergeant major" who was the real leader behind the operation that everybody respected. If I was part of the "think tank" at Hasbro, with the character design it would have made more sense to make Ultra Magnus into "Optimus Prime version 2" with an in-story explanation that his car carrier assembly was a "life support" system after Optimus' death at the hands of Megatron. It would have saved a lot of kids from crying or moms writing in angry letters.

You know I've been thinking about it for a while since the first time I watched this video and I really wish that they brought in that little diaclone pilot and called it Spike. Maybe the Daniel but I understand if the licensing and the toy rights for the little pilots was a lot

I don’t know if Magnus was doing Wheelie any favours by diving on top of him to take the shot, especially considering his bulk and mass, he’d probably have crushed him. So just curious, did the Diaclone line have any supporting fiction to go along with it? It’s interesting that the name Convoy was carried over from Diaclone to Transformers but not Powered Convoy in the Japanese series

Good point about Wheelie, ha! I don't believe Diaclone had any supporting show or comic.

it'll be interesting to see if X-Transbots Commander Stack or Fanstoys Margh will be the definitive magnus toy
