as the ONLY eSports player to have been awarded "Unreal Tournament 3 World Champion" to a lucrative prize pool - I practiced like hell ready for the next lan invite on the pro-circuit; then BOOM.... I got a letter and email within 3 days - "Unreal Tournament 3 will no longer be supported for eSports" Right now I am a top competitor for ESL's Pre-Alpha cups and ladders... I was incredible at UT3 - nearly unstoppable; I would play 10+ man DM's and go with 1-2 deaths worse case scenario while winning the (51 grags) at UMG league....

I spent a shitload of time on UT2k4 (onsloaght mostly). Than when UT3 came out I spent quiet a bit of time on that. After some time I took a break from it and when I came back I got a tear in my eye as I found out that almost all servers were filled with bots. There were only 2 or so servers with acual people. I still wish I could get to play UT3 as much as I played UT2k4.

my biggest 2 problems with UT3 was the Awkward reticle (it feels out of place and not actually aiming at center but rather above it) and the removal of Assault, Normal Onslaught, and Domination.
@Artaneius11 жыл бұрын
This video was decent, but there was little to no facts about truly why UT3 bombed in terms of popularity. The only fact you brought up was that Gears became Epic's #1 priority which is true. But there were MANY factors that combined that led to UT'3's fall, at least for the PC version. Including: Consolized menus and configurations, Gamespy ID required logins, removal or nerfing of skillful double and wall jumps, the campaign was a complete wreck and had nothing to do with the tournament itself, for that time it required a really beefy computer to even be able to run it at 30-50 fps, and most of all the online service was completely glitched until a patch came out. And it didn't even have a matchmaking service that has been standard with online shooters since Halo 2. Yes, mods have mostly fixed most of the proglems this game had now after YEARS of release. Damage has been done though and most players left after a year or so. Just wish this review contained more detailed information besides of what the IGN review of this game pretty much states back in 07.

Yeah Unreal Engine 3 games were difficult to run on PC early on. The 8800GT was the first graphics card that was really up to the task. This game wasn't as ridiculous as Crysis when it came to steep requirements but you definitely had to have a beefy PC. I also think arena-style shooter games were becoming less popular by the time UT3 came out. Call of Duty 4 came out right around the same time, that being the undisputed king of multiplayer shooters on PC. I think UT3 would have been a lot more successful had it come out a year earlier (with slightly scaled-down graphics appropriate for the hardware of the time).

@jacky_cola9 жыл бұрын
+Mechacaseal Nah, UT2004 was the best. Everything after was a step back. Look, for me, Unreal was always defined by being 2 or 10 steps ahead of other games. In Unreal 1 they had like 10 Weapons with each 2 modes and some with aditional combos (legendary shock combo, rocket pattern, loading and homing). Together with the brilliant engine it was just perfect. UT introduced simple doging, more complex weapons and gamemodes and advanced tactics ahead of just shooting. Just think of using the impact hammer to shoot the translocator device throuh a map and then teleport there... UT2003/2004 then added the boostdoges / walljumps and new gamemodes while keeping all the good old things or advancing them. Not as much as old Unreal, but still ahead of other shooters where bunnyhopping was still the most complex thing to do. Then UT3 came out and took steps backwards by not adding new things and reducing everything that was different from most shooters. While it still has a lot of UT it feels more like an engine demo. I also dislike the maps' dark themes, as most are neither realistic nor futuristic. We came from spaceships, went over future gore battles and now we are back on chinese old temples?? What I'd expected were ruins of the futuristic world several hundred years after the futuristic world of UT99 - not ruins of 2000 year old chinese shit which we have already in reallife 2015. Even the last Call of Duty 2105 allows crazy jumps and doges and shit, while a game like UT which I once loved for this kind of things, had this in 2004 and is now going on to reduce it.
@jacky_cola9 жыл бұрын
***** I know it's dead. I was there when it died. Still it's sad that they are going backwards and make casual shit instead of catching up with what they did in the past. Tom Clancy's games still advance, just maybe in other directions. Imagine a new Rainbow Six where they remove sneaking and silenced weapons or something like that lol

Phantasy Star Online came out late 2000, Unreal came mid 1998. Thats over two years and two years were a lot back then. Yet the unreal engine was technically better. Well, you cant compare a shooter to an rpg BUT phantasy star didn't have anything special that rpg games didn't have before. While Unreal, Half Life and Quake 3 defined an entire Aera of FPS Shooter.

Still a big question is, why did you like Unreal? When the main enemy Skaarj is an Empire consistant of different species, the main race being a reptilian race with the name Skaarj. The Gen Mo'Kai are part of that Empire, but they are nomadic warriors living in tribal traditions. Where Combat is a high respecting society standard. They joined the tournaments in Unreal Tournament 2003(4) because of the bloodsport within the tournaments. And Mr. Crow is a bio-engineered weapon, he's not dead or living. And he's a referense to "Crow" the Anti-hero brought back by a crow to execute his revenge on the people that killed his fiance and himself. A pretty dark comic if you ask me.

Sad to see the video series has finally come to an end, but it was great watching it and seeing the hard work gone into making them. There will most likely be another Unreal game, when Gears Of War is no longer wanted and the original UT servers become dead, but that's a story that will happen several years from now, when the bigwigs at Epic finally unleash their product. Regards.

Hey pal. Glad you liked the series. I wouldn't say it's officially closed, as if or when a new one gets announced then I'll do a video on that as well as keep people informed during development. I am however, working on another series which will be bigger and badder than this one. For now, True Review will return to top 10 videos for the time being but I'll be focused mainly on this up-coming series. I won't spoil it, but instead of focusing on development and game-play like I did in this series, it'll be a purely lore based series. So weird coming back to this video seven years later. I recently purchased all the UT games on Steam. UT99, UT2K4, and UT3 along with UC2 Liandra Conflict on the Xbone since it's backwards compatible and only $10. I do like going back and playing older games that had bots instead of modern gaming where most games make you require an internet connection. I'm also pretty salty that Epic is now just worried about Fortnite and not actually working on UT4...

I have to agree that the naming was quite perplexing. The reasoning I came to, different from the two theories you mention, is that the numbering was following the console releases. Now, why it was Unreal Tournament 3 as opposed to Unreal Championship 3 I couldn't tell you. It could be any, all or none of the above...

Pretty sure it was named UT3 because it has more focus on story than the others. The franchise started with Unreal, and then moved to UT because of the success of the deathmatch. Unreal was more of a story game, much like quake. A few games later they released Unreal 2, which served as another game focused on story. Although they released more tournament games with "plot," none of them really had a full story element. With the release of UT3, the game would be combining the focus on multiplayer of the Tournament titles, but also exist as Unreal 3, the next Unreal title focusing heavily on story. Just a guess tho xD

in response to 4:15 there was unreal, unreal tournament, unreal 2003, which was an expansion to unreal tournament, 2004, championship, championship 2, and then 3. The president of Epic games Mark Rein said in an interview that they chose the name 3 because initially it was going to be a ps3 exclusive, but then they decided to release on both consoles, meaning 3 systems: pc, ps3, and 360. He also said they chose the name 3 because it was launching around the same time the unreal engine 3 launched. So if you were going by the order of the games, UT3 should be UT 6 or 7 because ut 2003 was considered an expansion to unreal tournament

I wonder if the maker of this video actually played UT3 when it first came out given his lack of disappointment in it. Upon release, it had considerably less content than UT2k3, would later see patches that were tens of gigabytes big, hardly any variation in the art direction, and it all looked like it was put together out of recycled Gears of War assets. Don't get me started on the forgettable singleplayer or the Ripper's absence.

these reviews were done by what sounds like a casual player only. I mean he mentioned that noone used the wall dodge? The movement in UT3 feels horrible by comparison with any other arena shooter, it feels like gear with a dodge button. There's a reason quake 3 is still played competitively and why ut3 servers are dead. There's a fluidity and crispness to movement and shooting. I love UT classic because of that, but ut3 is just so clunky and unplayable as an arena shooter. Anyone who says the onslaught mode is the most memorable part of the UT series has me worrying about the UT4 development. And wtf is wrong with the lightning gun? It's really just a skin for the sniper rifle...
@Velocirocktor10 жыл бұрын
He is a terrible reviewer. Also, I completely agree with you about UT3. 2k4 and UT99 were the best (and soon UT4. My god, have you tried it? It's already spectacular and it's just pre-alpha). The only value these videos have are in the historical facts he looked up on Wikipedia. His opinions (that he conveys in a way that makes it seem like they speak for the majority of Unreal fans when they are ridiculously off the mark) and his boring and slow gameplay clips really seem to give away how much of a casual/terrible player he is, and a blatant UT99 fanboy. Also, the Lightning Gun is mostly just a cooler sniper rifle. In 2k3 it had inaccuracy problems but in 2k4 it was awesome, both in function, aesthetics and pure kill satisfaction. It also was balanced in the sense that it revealed a camping sniper's position as compared to the standard sniper. Tied for my favorite gun along with the Flak Cannon. Both LG and Sniper worked well together in 2k4 though, with different maps using different guns. I'd love the same to happen in UT4 by default.

ssbj144 I agree with you tho. i like the game UT3 tho, but i didnt like how they slowed down the pace like you said, and also how the bots fucking cheat. UT2004 was my UT game ever though. I liked the movements, the dodging, the game modes, the game speed, the not-so-heavy gravity, may i go on?
@bishopgantry10619 жыл бұрын
***** The singleplayer section feelt botched and rushed and just feelt like a poorer copy of Quake3's singleplayer which came out 8 years earlier, multi with bots as singleplayer is just lazy. Didnt help the characters was completly unreletable. While the art was amazing it was to cluttered up it was nearly impossible to tell walls apart from characters, UT's design should have been industrial and gritty, not I own an iPhone. And for some reason hit effects had such an inferior quality than the rest of the game. The netcode was unreliable at the best of times and the good parts of Onslaught had been butchered. And then we have the debacle of what was promised and what was cut and finally Epics abhorrent treatment of their customers pre launch and post launch of UT3.
@toprob209 жыл бұрын
Bishop Gantry I have played UT games since a m8 got me the demo when I was 12. But after a month of trying UT3 I've never played UT again and got into WOW heavily (thx for that epic :( ). But this review is absolute dogpoo! First as mentioned before Epic sold out to the consoles and the fanbase didn't like it. Second the game did not have a decent serverbrowser which was one of the best things of UT. The game was laggy and buggy (and I bought a pc just for this) and online it was horrible. As someone mentioned above the maps, textures and allround visuals sucked in the sense that things where very hard to see. And then we have gameplay... OMG the campaign (which was the only thing halfway playable) sucked ass was boring and shouldn't have been part of the game. All I needed from this game was DM TDM CTF and decent instagib. Ultimately what the reviewer misses is that UT was is and will always be an ONLINE game. UT3 was a console game. The reason why UT3 failed had nothing to do with Gears of war and everything to do with the way the game disappointed the (VERY LOYAL) community. There was no room for community involvement and UT3 was more like Call of duty then unreal tournament. It failed because it deserved it, it failed because its a bad game. It didn't do what it was supposed to, and it alienated most of the fans. Thats why most went back to UT2k4 and UT classic.
@Apocalypse7549 жыл бұрын
UT3 was good, liked it, still, it could've gotten a WHOLE LOT BETTER imo. Not complaining, but I just hope that UT4 could return the old, loving fast-paced gameplay that I really liked. Along with more game modes to play with.

I don't like how he tends to make his opinions most other peoples opinions as well. He says UT2004 wasn't successful. That's just bullcrap. It's widely considered the best UT yet and he said UT3 was successful. Not at all. People hated the retirement of Assault, a huge amount of missing chars including the Gen Mo'Kai, the Skaarj, the robots from UT2003/4 and the nightmare species such as Mr. Crow. Instead they were replaced with boring generic ones with huge shoulders that make them look stupid and everyone I know didn't want a big story, they just wanted a tournament like normal. Also, compared to UT2004 especially, this game had a very small amount of content. A year later after this was released, it was hard to find servers on all platforms. Still a great review nonetheless though as well as all of your others even if this reviews is pretty much the opposite of what I've heard.

I only listened once, but I think the author failed to realize why UT3 failed so miserably in terms of online player counts. Basically, the game was released as a consolized stillborn in a beta state. When it was released, you couldn't even add server favorites. Also, the user interface and menus were horribly consolized, slow, and clunky, as though the game were intended for consoles. Many players didn't like the dark Gears-of-Warrified looks, either. Going from UT99 or UT 2004 to UT3 was like downgrading from a loaded Lexus sedan to a stripped down Yugo. Let's all hope Epic gets it right with UT4 this time.

Personally I love both series (with one esception: Invisible War; I never finished that game) and can't wait for the new Unreal Tournament that I've heard about. I was tempted to check alpha state but decided to wait for full game and then just go on rampage with good old Flak Cannon. I just hope that Sniper Rifle will look and load another bullet into the chamber like the one in UT3. Then I need to get a break from work, buy a lot of food, buy something to drink, disappear from the outside world and spend some time with UT.

it makes me sad that i cant find a single good review video on youtube that really shows people what Unreal Tournament is about. These so called reviewers are so freaking noobs i cant even describe. Playing againt novice bots, standing still before every shot, not a single dodge jump, trick jump, teleport use, typical new generation console kids, that grew up on call of duty and battlefield...

I kinda hated Epic games when they went full on console development. They abandoned their PC fanbase when Gears of War became popular. And then blaming piracy to abandon PC development. Recently that's changed. They are going back to include PCs in their gaming development. I'm hoping they come up with something good that I can spend hours playing to.

Little correction but a graphics engine handels the shaders, LOD, collision,... The graphics you are talking about is a combination of models and textures made in different programs then imported in the engine. The engine does not magically make good graphics.

UT3 is called UT3 because it's both Unreal 3 and Unreal Tournement. That was so easy, how can you not understand that?

I would love to see a remake of the original "Unreal" Game with todays graphics.. You would have a truely epic game!! I'd play it over and over and over!!! :)

+Kind Old Raven Umm, you know that Unreal Tournament wasn't the first Unreal game, right? The guy's talking about a remake of Unreal Gold.

UT is a good game but yeah like Laszek said.. It wasn't the first game ;) The Original Unreal game was just.. "Unreal" Played it back in the day and god.. THAT's a good game with awesome campain.. Just run around and look at what the AI are doing is awesome in that game :D

Peter Wikström I'm sorry I assumed wrong because the video was on one of the multiplayer games from the series, so I automatically assumed we were discussing the first of the full-multiplayer games haha! My bad.

Unreal 3 had 2 huge problems for me, first the Engine simply had too high hardware demands when it was released, with current hardware the new game looked and ran worse on low settings than UT2k4 on Ultra Settings on the same machine. Problem number 2: they slowed down the movement, i don't remember the exact Details, but they scaled down the double / dodge jumping in a way that completely killed the movement mechanics for me, coming from UT2004 it simply felt too slow. I also ended up playing Gears of War 1 to 3, GoW1 had the best coop mode, which was a lot of fun because the game was hard and having 2 people screaming and laughing at each other over headsets, that before were on completely different skill levels in UT games was nice. In GoW2 the Horde mode was awesome but the difficulty of the singleplayer mode went down, it wasn't much of a challange for us in Coop compare to GoW1... and GoW3 was so easy that it was really enough at that point. But saying that Gears of War competed with UT makes no sense to me, Gears of War is an Xbox 360 exclusive, UT was always a PC game first... EPIC could have had a prominent title on both Platforms this whole time... and honestly with UT*4* i am concerned about the business model and i fear that the People that work on it now simply don't have the MAGIC anymore to make a proper UT game, so many years later. And then all of a sudden there is "Toxikk"... a $15 Indie game that looks a hell of a lot like UT2004 and suddenly there are 2 games on the horizon in the FPS Arena Shooter genre... now all i want is Half Life 3 and a new Quake Arena game ;P

I think the Onslaught maps are way too small in UT3 given how quickly anybody can surf around.

Now, even Gears of War has been benched in favor of the Fortnite gold mine that seems to be going on forever. I’d love to see Unreal Tournament and Gears of War come back (especially UT).

I absolutely loved ut and ut2004… and my anticipation for ut3 was sky high… but something got lost in the normal maps of ut3… The stages felt very normal and there was no sense of anything being “unreal” like in the past two games 🙁

I must be missing something. I played a lot of UT going back to UT99. UT3 was widely regarded as worst of the series by the UT community at large. It's release on PC was a disaster as I remember as it was clearly a game that was designed for consoles. After 6 months of patches it was actually pretty good, but by then most of the community had left. I stopped playing after a year or so because there was so few servers and players left. Contrast this to UT99 which was still going strong after 4 years. To me GoW did not cause UT to fail. It was a 3rd person shooter and really not in the same genre. UT3 failed because it wasn't that great. I left to play other FPS games such as Battlefied and CoD. I am looking forward to UT4 though.

I thought UT3 was great. Not as good as the previous two in total, but it's onslaught mode was just as fun as before. My only quibble is the lack of assault.

With all the Unreal Tourney games released, I still find myself most attached to UT2004 out of all of them. I am TRYING to warm up to UT4, UT3 was great graphically, but too slow, and rather boring. Haven't really gotten into the franchise in time to play UT99, though...I was too busy with Duke Nukem 3D, Quake II, and Shadow Warrior at the time. ;)
