The History of Vatican & the Papal States : Every Year

I'm glad to be back to you all after a couple of months of inactivity, which I am so sorry for.
This video above shows the history of the Papal states, which eventually evolved into modern Vatican, from year 754 until today (January 30th).
In a sense, the Papal states were, too, a monarchy no different than France or England, with the pope as the "king".
I've decided to show some fiefdoms even though all of them could not be shown, due to lack/divergence of information

I get why Italy is sideways, because medieval Christians made maps with East on top because on the top, the earthly paradise or the garden of Eden lay at the easternmost point of the world, near India and China, and where Adam and Eve dwelt until they were driven out of Paradise.

Nice Video. I did not know Aragon and England were vassals of the Pope. But were not the the holy orders - Tuetonic knights, Knights of St John - also under the pope? They had Prussia thru Baltic states, Rhodes, Malta, and an island in the carribbean. Why are they not shown?

In the case of England, it's basicaly because King John agreed to rule his realm as a Papal fiefdom in the Pope's name, and make Stephen Langton the Archbishop of Canterbury, in exchange for the Pope lifting his Papal Interdict and ending John's Excommunication. It's due to some very complex theocratic systems, but basically sovereigns are temporal rulers - assigned by God to rule the realms of His Kingdom on Earth, whilst the Pope is God's chosen representative on Earth, so all monarchs who are part of the Catholic Church technically owe their fealty to the Pope. This means their kingdoms are actually the Pope's, in a theocratic sense, thus the Pope has the right to demand they rule their realms in his name should he so desire, though this right was rarely exercised, mainly because good kings get to rule their lands without strict Papal oversight to keep them happy.

Ok, but can someone explain to me, how the Vatican got all of it's lands? I am interested in the history of the Papal States, but as for now, i don't fully understand the concept of wars in the Vatican. I've read about Sieges in the Papal States against Naples and Genoa, but never understood the wars and how they were going. I mean, was the Pope the one responsible of starting the wars? And if so, what mechanics did they use and how did they fight? Did they even have a military? Did the Pope function as the "king" or "general" of the Papal States? Was the Papal states functioning just like other countries like Wallachia (For example) or the Livonian States? I'd really appreciate the answers forward

Well ofc it'd take very long to explain over 1000 years of history, but because clergy are usually forbidden from taking up arms, the Popes(, when they were attacked,) so to say commissioned a general or nobleman, respectively, to lead their troops. I'd assume they used mercenaries previously, but since 1506, the now still existing and prominent Swiss Guard was created (from Swiss mercenaries loyal to the Pope); at least from the 19th century, I think, until 1968, you also had the Papal Noble Guard and when the Papal States were conquered in 1870, the Papal Zouaves (although Blessed Pope Pius IX. commanded them to surrender after Porta Pia was breached to avoid a bloodbath) defending the Pope(, some of whom then went to France to fight against the Prussians). The Pope was commonly called the "Papa-Re", i.e. "Pope-King" of the Papal States, yes, but which, before Julius II., the one who founded the Swiss Guard in 1506, were often largely contested with the neighbouring powers and thus the Pope not seldomly not controlled much more than only Rome itself, or not even that. But the purpose of the Papal States was to safeguard the freedom of the Church from a secular authority meddling into the latter's affairs which happened so often even under Catholic monarchs

Short answer, yes, they had their own armies, and still are monarchs of the Vatican. The pope still can call armies and declare crusades if they consider it necessary, just that none of them have done it in centuries.

Aragon and England were held by the Holy See for some period of time. They were like vassals.

@@KheyPard Bruh Aragon had multiple wars against the pope in the time you paint it as vassal. In 1212 they fought in the Cathar crusade, in 1285 the pope declared a crusade against Aragon in the sicilian vespers war, and they spent the 1300s hating each other because of this. In the early 1400s Aragon was the main suporter of the anti popes. It's hard to find a country with worse relations with the pope. Not to mention that the kingdom of Aragon and the crown of Aragon are not the same thing. The donation to the pope was only of the kingdom.

Adobe software is common. Usually a mix of Adobe illustrator, after effects and photoshop for different elements (depending on how much money you have). However the very first 'History every year' videos were made using just paint. Even gimp works.
