We live very rurally and knew if the storm was as bad as predicted, we'd need to be very well prepared. Here's what we did.

You spoil us by continuing to worry about posting videos even when you've got all of this going on that you have to deal with. So thank YOU! I know it's not much, but I've been playing your past videos in the background while I work on household chores and just allowing the ads to run, as a tiny way of trying to support you two. Really glad to hear you're both doing okay and I will continue to send good thoughts your way. Take care!

You are so right that one needs to start buying these items slowly. Certainly need to purchase a few battery lamps . Just purchased a solar power generator . It can be powered not only by solar.but also by electricity and our gas generator so we only use the gas generator to power it . 🎉it’s very quiet and can be used indoors. Have not had the need to use it that way yet but we have tried it and we think it will be a good solution to a power outage.

One thing we do before a storm here in NW Florida is fill up our cars, buy extra propane tanks and gather all the important documents and put them in a waterproof container. We fill the bathtub with water so we can flush the toilet in se the water is turned off. We also always have bottled water stocked up. I’m glad you were prepared.

Agree 100% with your comments regarding Enedis and the Commune workers. We are just over the hill from you, driving into town Saturday I really did think we would be without power for quite some time, 8km of shattered posts, trees down and cables on the floor. Amazed when we got power back last night, with the water back a few hours later. Fantastic effort from all those involved.

We have had the exact opposite here in Australia, Bushfires galore. I have had some batch cooking in the freezer for a little while, so I donated them to some of the victims who have had to leave their place, and since lost everything to the fires. It's not much, but to them it's a lot. Being prepared is everything.

Another source of light we have recently invested in are rechargeable light bulbs. Put them in any light socket. They charge up when you flip on the switch to turn on the light. When the power goes out, you can flip on the switch and they work for 6-8 hrs without an electric source. We have half a dozen spread throughout the house.

Well done, that's so useful and impressive. There will be more and more extreme situations to come, and it's essential we prepare and adapt, without panic or paranoia. It's interesting to see how a practical, frugal, can-do mindset can serve in all kinds of eventualities. And you aren't just looking after yourselves but also your community, and are aware and appreciative of what your wider community and local services are doing to look after you. Thanks Jane for this very instructive video and I am very pleased to see that you are safe. Can I add that when we have an outage I place duvets on top of the chest freezers to conserve the cold. As a child , my family had to weather a blizzard with no electric for 10 days. My father could not get home as the roads were unnavigable. My parents had prepared. My mother cooked soup beans on a wood stove. We melted snow to flush the toilet. My mother stayed calm and encouraged us kids to play board games. We slept in the living room to stay close to the wood stove. I was never worried. Because of this I learned to be prepared. It is not easy. It is not quick unless you want to throw a lot of money at the project. One step at a time. Make a list of priorities and then watch for opportunities to acquire items.

Oh my days sounds like a cat 4 hurricane that hit you. You were very well prepared. Hope that your electrics are restored very soon! I've been thinking through several here and it still amazes me that the lines surround the stores here just hours before the storm hits even with sometimes 3 days warning. Luckily our house doesn't flood so we don't evacuate. Wish every one in my area here would see your video. I am envious of your basement (a preppers dream!). Can't have them here as we are too near sea level ( high water table in normal time). Great video from Houston Texas area.

Nice to hear you sounding so positive. When I lived in the country I had “food grade” 50 gallon tanks that I kept filled with water for the livestock. Additionally having a septic system when a storm was coming I would fill the bathtub with water so I could pour water into the toilet to flush it. This was before battery lights so always had kerosene lamps with plenty of kerosene on hand.

I was wondering about access to water, too. I suppose if your well pump can be on the generator, you're good. Anyone on mainlines water, would have to have a backup for water. I can imagine you have used your bath water to clear toilets! Thanks for all the great advice at the top of the video. I think it's not well known unless one lives in a storm prone area.

We in Northern Michigan also take the weather warnings seriously and we stay well prepared. If we thought power would go out, we would fill the bathtub up with water, so we would be able to flush the toilet, 1 pail full at a time. We always bring in extra kindling to have dry to get the wood stoves started. I keep gallon jugs of water in the freezer, so it will keep my refrigerator cold(like the old ice box), as well as keeping the freezer set for days.

While we can get massive winds, what we usually prepare for is winter blizzards. I have lots of food, and ways to cook the food if the power goes out just like you. I would love a wood fireplace, but no luck talking my husband into putting one in as of yet. We are lucky as we live in the city and so far power is restored quickly. I’m in the US Midwest. My 16-17 yo gas water heater stopped working on American Thanksgiving, which was Thursday. At least I wasn’t hosting a dinner. I rent and let landlord know. He’s out of town so it will be replaced Monday. I shut off the water. I’ve been heating up water on stove and with electric kettle so I can do a sponge bath with a couple of big mixing bowls and a plastic pitcher in the bathroom. It would be more difficult for a family, but it works for me as a single person.

Very useful feedback from you, you were so well prepared, I take notes for the next time, I'll have a checklist too! Living in Côtes d'Armor near Saint-Brieuc but in a rural area, we have been affected as well, lost only one big oak in the garden, no other big damages. But we were not at all prepared for a loss of power for 6 long days ( It has been restored this afternoon). We are usually not here at the bad season. We found various solutions to cook with a camping gas burner bought in emergency the second day, to charge our batteries in the shopping maul in the town, to wash our laundry in a launderette, ... In the end we also did not lose any food and did not catch a cold, but we were not at all relaxed. Next time if any, our wood burner will be fully operational, which is not yet the case.

Had similar several years back. I’m in Australia. The house shook and the noise was incredible. Trees down everywhere. My neighbour’s huge pine tree went down across his car. Had it gone the other way it would have destroyed my house. Power was out for 5 or 6 days. The train line was out for over a week from memory. It was freezing. I had a small gas heater that didn’t need electricity. I showered at work which had generator power. My husband packed up the kids and went to Canberra for a week. I stayed as we had our pets and I had work.

I have always lived in a cold climate (Minnesota, USA) and we can have some brutal winter storms (summer storms too!). Starting in the fall, I never let my car go below 1/2 a tank of fuel. We keep battery operated lights and rechargeable power banks. We have a dual-fuel generator (can use either gasoline or propane) and we keep supplies of bottled water and a well-stocked food pantry. The “good” thing about being in a cold climate with a power outage, is that we aren’t out of power for any extreme amount of time, our utility workers are so fast at getting us power. With the low temperatures we get, it can be really really dangerous to be out of power. I understand that there is a degree of privilege being able to be prepared for a weather event, but I know if any of our neighbors or friends needed help, we would have the means to give them what they need.

It (hopefully!) only takes one, maybe two good storms for those who fail to prepare beforehand to get it together and prepare. Excellent advice, particularly about buying extra extension cords. In addition to emergency lights, flashlights, and those little lights you can pop on that you buy from the Dollar Store, we also have candles and glass lamps we can fill with lamp oil should the need arise. Having a light source can be very comforting and encouraging for those who are on edge because of the storm as well as children. After all, who doesn't like to make shadow figures on the wall when they have a flashlight in hand? Glad you sailed through this storm. Your video will help others weather future storms, too.😊

So glad you two and the girls are safe from the horrid storm. I grew up in a tiny house on a farm where we had electricity but no water or sewer, and often had very bad winter storms where electricity went down. Thankfully my Mom and Dad were resourceful and we had a potbelly coal burning stove which kept our home warm, and we got hot chocolate which was a treat. Also, as kids we wore several layers of clothes and mittens which made it a little difficult to play games! I'm sure our parents were worried but they were also resourceful, and thankfully the electricity shutoff didn't last more than 2-3 days when temperatures were often -20 below. This was in early 1950s so I don't know if we had a generator but I do know my Dad was up at 4:30 to take large milk cans to pump house to fill with water every morning so Mom had enough for cooking, cleaning and laundry. Life is so much easier now especially in an emergency if you are just a little prepared and have some resources and common sense. Still, I feel badly for those caught up in any of these weather emergencies and always am thankful for my good fortune. Enjoy your week and may the force and electricity be with you🙏🙏

Bonjour Jane and Mike. Relieved and happy that you are doing well under the circumstances. Someone here says all the time: Be prepared not scared and you are proof of it. Beside the butane cooker and the outside bbq, I also use the fondue pot for heating a bit of water for coffee, a soup, stew, so I have several bottles of fondue fuel on hand. Thought it might help anyone out there with this option. Take care

Being prepared is the key and it sounds like you were ready for anything. In Colorado we have to be prepared as well for big snow storms as you might not be able to get out for many days. Sounds awful but if you are ready it's really no problem. Hope your life gets back to normal quickly, take care. Happy week to you.

Happy to see you are weathering the fall out from the storm so well. It pays to be prepared. I appreciated you going over your list of things you did to be prepared. I live in a part of Canada where we have been relatively lucky in regards to storm damage but never say never so we will continue to prepare. Continue to stay safe and take care.

You were certainly better prepared than most! Here on the West Coast the US, we've always had an extra box of food put away along with a camp stove and French press, because of earthquakes! We never lost power for more than a day. But the last ice storm a few years ago here in the Pacific Northwest was rough. Our side of town lost lots of trees and large branches. Friends on the other side of town were hit hard and lost power for a week. We now have a gas (petrol) generator! I hope your power comes back soon.

Have been through 2 hurricanes in Florida but amazed at how many people just don’t prep. Now in SW France and we had Storm Domingos go through Saturday night, not as bad as what you had in Finistère, but still very nasty, and garden is a real mess. We are well prepped like you, but something I hadn’t thought about was something someone suggested. Fill your bathtub so you have water for the toilet if necessary. We have had several occasions when we have been without water. Other than that I also have a big propane gas ring which my canning water bath sits on, so that is another source of hot water etc.

Glad your all doing fine! We do all the same things plus a few more. We always fire up the chainsaw to make sure its good to go with oil, gas, and extra chains. We also keep extra tarps and such in case limbs go through roof or window is blown out. We were without power and a big tree in our upstairs for 2weeks after a similar storm. We lost a large freezer during that experience. Now I keep very little meat in big freezer but I can that now and store it in pantry.

Thank you for keeping us updated! You were very well prepared. Last winter in the UK it looked as if there might be power outtages at one point. We have open fires and a gas cooker, but I stocked up on extra wood, candles, matches and battery lighting. I'm thinking of getting a solar phone charger. Hope you have power again soon - take care. x

Thank you for sharing how you are doing (I’m very thankful you two and your cute dogs are well!) but also the ins and outs of how to prepare and how it looks to go through a disaster. It helps to think through what we would do and what we need to prioritize purchasing for an emergency. The practical application is very beneficial.
