The Hitting Clinic with Chris Waye | Your Eyes and Brain Are Processing A Lot On Every Pitch

We spend a lot of time working on the physical aspects of hitting a baseball but as I’ve mentioned in previous videos, a hitters eyes are relaying a lot of information to their brain and based on that information, hitters have milliseconds not seconds to determine if a pitch is hit-able or not.
With the pitcher standing just 60 feet away from home plate, a hitter’s eyes are only able to track the baseball once it leaves the pitcher’s hand at release for the first 40 feet that it travels and even then, a hitters eyes don’t actually pick up the baseball until it’s a quarter of the way to them before they actually lose it again.
It’s humanly impossible for hitter’s to track the baseball all the way to the point of contact because the baseball moves too fast for a hitter’s eyes to keep up with it, and hitter’s actually get their barrel to the point of contact based on their brains telling their bodies where the baseball is likely to end up based on the information their eyes have relayed to their brain pre-pitch.
This is why it’s important for hitters to keep their head as still as possible and pick up a pitcher’s release point prior to them releasing the pitch because their brains need all the information to help them to decide whether or not to swing, and to tell them where their barrel needs to be in order to meet the baseball at the point of contact on time.
