This was one of the best parts of the trilogy for me, when Gandalf yells “This is madness” and just when you think the Elves are going to stand by and watch the Dwarves be slaughtered, the elves came flying over top of the dwarves uniting on the battlefield with no words for a common cause. If there had been a discussion, it wouldn’t have been nearly as powerful or exciting.

It was at that moment, the elves forgot they had bows and arrows. The dwarven reserves standing on the hill forgot they had artillery and didnt immediately reform ranks to face the new enemy. It's actually pretty interesting that the extended version and the normal version are different here. In this version the dwarfs and elves don't actually fight and Gandalfs 'this is madness' is about the elves not helping which in the end they do. In the extended version they use the 'madness'-quote as if it's aimed at the dwarfs and elves fighting. The surprise effect is a bit better in the normal version because the elves are really only there to attack Thorin and to get their belongings back, and don't care about anything else. In the end they still decide to fight for the good cause. In the extended version , they are already fighting and see their opponents leaving for a bigger threat which they then join in to.

The whole point was that Legolas was really cool, not that a bow was a legit close combat weapon. With the later films they totally missed that point and everything is just spectacle but the physics of the universe has just turned to nonsense. Now they just repeat a tired formula ad nauseum. They play ominous music and make the characters shout things like "This is hopeless" and then 10 seconds later they show something new appearing and triumphant music plays while the new "unexpected" thing does some fancy moves and chops up 4 or 5 of the million enemies which makes the rest go away. Then we have a little chat about who they are and how they got here just in time.

Actually in a way it did help. Shield wall may have held against the orcs but not for long. The elves jumping over the wall and attacking the orcs caused the orc charge to halt, leaving them open to being killed by the combined enemy forces.

Problems woth the armies: Men: don't have much fighting rescoures Elves: intelligent but weak Dwarves: very strong but small Orcs: thick armors but hard to move around

Clara Akosi Orc armor isn’t that thick since they can’t really temper/forge well. Only a handful have good armor compared to the rest of the Orcs

Um, yeah. The elves should have launched waves of arrows over the dwarves while the stout folk maintained a near-immovable shield/spear wall. The peasants and the underpowered wizard adds support. But hey, it looked cool. Many of us have learned that tactics from LOTR just isn't a common thing.

Elven Blade Weavers are the most elite among elven ranks and they are fearless and have a strong sense of comradery. What they lack in physical strength they make up for in speed and synergy as muliple blade weavers will attack a single enemy from all directions. Pretty much every elven warrior has lost someone battling orcs.
