Fun Facts after this movie: Balin was killed in Moria. He was in the tomb in the Lord of the Fellowship of the Ring. Ori was the skeleton holding the big book next to Balin's tomb as well. Oin, the dwarf with the ear pipe, was killed by the Watcher (the huge kraken-octopus creature) in Moria from the Fellowship of the Ring. Dwalin lived on throughout the Fourth Age and passed away at the age of 340. Gloin was seen accompanying Gimli in the Fellowship of the Ring at the Council of Elrond. Bombur was still the same, eating and drinking. Bifur and Bofur cloistered in the Lonely Mountains with their riches. Dori and Nori participated in the Battle of Dale, which were the Dwarves of Erebor against the Easterlings of Sauron. The Easterlings were those corrupt men seen marching towards the Black Gate during Two Towers, where Frodo, Sam, and Gollum saw them. Dain II Ironfoot became King as we saw. During the War of the Ring, he was killed in the Battle of Dale, defending the body of King Brand of Dale. King Brand was the son of Bain. And Bain was the son of Bard.

It's nice to see the Hobbit movies getting some love. This trilogy gets a lot of hate, but if you watch with an open mind, it will definitely touch your heart. It may interest you to know that under King Dain, Erebor became prosperous again and regained much, though not all, of its former glory. Bard became King of the rebuilt city of Dale, and the region was once again a center of trade. Dain ultimately fell defending Erebor from the forces of Sauron during the War of the Ring. The successful defense of Erebor prevented Sauron's armies from advancing West to Rivendell. Sometime after the events of the Hobbit, Balin led another company of Dwarves to attempt to resettle Moria. You saw the outcome of that quest in Fellowship. Bilbo had other adventures after this story, mainly consisting of visits to Rivendell, where he eventually became friends with a young Aragorn. He often had Gandalf and/or his Dwarf friends as guests at Bag End. These things, as well as his year-long disappearance, caused him to be known as an eccentric by the Hobbits of the Shire, and he was no longer considered entirely respectable, which didn't bother him in the slightest. Lastly, the Hobbit trilogy was actually designed to be watched before LOTR, despite being made years afterward. When watched in their intended order, certain moments in all six films take on an entirely new context, and they form one continuous story. I strongly recommend watching them in that order when you do your rewatch. The shift in tone and visual style also makes more sense, as it starts out fanciful and almost Disneyesque (complete with songs), then becomes grittier and more realistic as the story gets darker.

Gandalf does visit Bilbo from time to time between the Hobbit and LotR. Balin visits Bilbo at least once as he travels between Erebor and the blue mountains (where the dwarves were living before they retake Erebor). They remain good friends until Balin tries to retake Moria and never returns ("Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria" as the tomb says where Gimli cries in Fellowship).

Fili and Kili were Thorin's sister-sons, nephews by his sister. In some cultures of our world as well as the Dwarven culture by Tolkien, that meant they were as if they were Thorin's true born sons. It makes it even more tragic for their deaths. True to the books, they were the only three dwarves to die.

The ending song is called "The Last Goodbye" sang by Billy Boyd (Pippin). The last line of the song is "I bid you a very fond farewell" which is also Bilbo's last line during his birthday speech in Fellowship. It's also assumed (at the time) that it was the director's, production's, and the actors' last goodbye to Tolkien/Middle Earth. But we have news that the original team and cast of LoTR and the Hobbit will produce a movie called "The Hunt for Gollum". The director is also the main star, Andy Serkis, aka Gollum. Trivia: during LoTR, he really stuck by Peter Jackson's side because he wanted to learn how to direct. In The Hobbit trilogy, Andy Serkis was 2nd director (director of one of their teams). A lot of the original cast has shown interest in returning if or when Andy Serkis and Peter Jackson invite them back. The confirmed ones that are interested in returning are Aragorn and Gandalf. Mind you, Aragorn's actor declined to return in The Hobbit Trilogy because Aragorn wasn't part of Bilbo's journey. Although Legolas wasn't in The Hobbit book, it is true that the company of Oakenshield were taken and jailed in Mirkwood, Legolas' home. And Thandruil really is the father of Legolas. So Viggo (Aragorn) showing interest in coming back for Hunt for Gollum means they're gonna stick to what Tolkien wrote. For context the Hunt for Gollum happens within The Fellowship of the Ring. It's the time when Bilbo left the Shire and Gandalf needed to research the origin of Bilbo's magic ring that is turning Bilbo evil. The research for the origin of the Ring meant Gandalf had to search for Gollum and find out where Gollum discovered the ring. It took 17years for Gandalf to research the full story from Isildur taking the Ring from Sauron's severed hand, until it reached Bilbo's hands. In that time, Gandalf asked help from Aragorn (a ranger good at tracking) and the Mirkwood Elves (Legolas) in his hunt for Gollum. So we might see Gandalf, Aragorn, Legolas and Thandruil again.

In the book, the killing of Smaug was different. Smaug was scared of the water so didn't swoop down over Lake-town. Also Bard was part of the militia and wasn't scorned and arrested like he was in the movies which I'm not sure why they changed that. Bilbo sent the Thrush to Bard to tell him of the bare spot and the Thrush arrived at the moment that Bard was out of arrows. He only had one left, the Black Arrow which was a normal sized arrow. He then says, "Arrow! Black Arrow! I have saved you to the last. You have never failed me and always I have recovered you. I had you from my father and he from of old. If ever you came from the forges of the true king under the Mountain, go now and speed well!" He then fired and hit the spot killing Smaug. It's a epic moment that wouldn't have worked with how they scaled up the size of Smaug which made them have to increase the size of the Black Arrow. The Rakin Bass animated movie does have the line and is more accurate to the books except for they kill over half of Thorin & Company instead of the three that were killed in the book which are the three killed in this movie. Also the Master of Lake-town died a different way. Bilbo gives his share of the treasure to Bard and the Master of Lake-town to rebuild Dale, however the Master flees with the treasure and starves to death in the desert. Three years later Bard becomes King of Dale and 33 yeers later Bain, his son becomes King. The battle also is changed considerably, including the fact that Ravenhill was actually held by the Elves and this is where Bilbo and Gandalf watched the battle from. Until just after the Eagles arrive when Bilbo is knocked out by a rock thrown by a goblin. It's actually Beorn who kills Bolg, crushing him, and Beorn carries the wounded Thorin off the battlefield in his paw. The hallway where Tauriel is fighting in close quarters, Evangeline did it herself, one of the takes she forgot to duck and got struck full force in the face by the stunt man who was playing the Orc in a motion capture suit. She mainly did her own stunts with the exception of Bolg throwing her into the wall, which they were reluctant to even let the stunt woman do because the costume doesn't have much space for padding and it was a very dangerous stunt, the stunt woman could have easily been paralyzed.

The battle of the five armies in the book was a total of 2 chapters. I appreciated how they delved deeper into the fates of the fallen dwarves here. Although overall I like the book better I liked how you actually see what happened to Fili, Kili, and Thorin. Also, blame Tolkien for killing them, not PJ lol. I will say that although I disapprove with the addition of the love story, it did add more weight to Kili’s death. The same with Thorin, although Azog shouldn’t have been in the movies, him going out heroically like that made his death more meaningful. Because we’re solely in Bilbo’s perspective in the book, this is how they describe Thorin’s wounds in it (before the conversation that he and Bilbo have that is similar to the movie): “There indeed lay Thorin Oakenshield, wounded with many wounds, and his rent armour and notched axe were cast upon the floor”. In general the battle descriptions in the LOTR and Hobbit books don’t show the scale of battle nearly as well as the movies do. Anyway, I’m glad you enjoyed it!

The white bearded old dwarf was Balin. You 'encountered' him in Moria, buried in the tomb lit up by a shaft of light, where Gimli ran into the room crying, and Gandalf read the book "we cannot get out." "Here lies Balin, son of Fundin, Lord of Moria".

A funny thing about the book - which was published long before Tolkien developed the story of LOTR -was that there was no Sauron. Gandalf had to leave the Dwarf party to deal with The Necromancer. And the Necromancer was absolutely nothing except a plot device to separate Gandalf from Thorin’s company so that the Dwarves could get into trouble in Mirkwood Forest without Gandalf there to help. Only in much later writing did Tolkien mesh together the two story lines and make The Necromancer be Sauron using a fake ID.

14:35 You must understand.. Saruman was not evil.. That "leave Sauron to me" was sincere and true.. Ok, he is jealous Gandalf's wisdom but he was a Maia and he was good.. When he started to use palantir for weakness of Sauron, Sauron effected him and make him turned to his side.. He is corrupted by Sauron, because Sauron could be one of the most powerful Maia.. Saruman is corrupted with Palantir just like Denethor (Boromir's father) is corrupted with Palantir.. Normally These are the wisest, good and strongest friends.. Think like that, Gandalf scared from Sauron so much.. His fear saved him.. Gandalf didnt even touch the Palantir.. He scared from Sauron that can corrupt him.. If he was so brave and if he try to fight Sauron with Palantir, if he touch Palantir too, He (Gandalf) can corrupt too..

According to the book, he was buried like you saw at the end, with the Arkenstone over the chest, and with his legendary sword Orcrist, the goblin-cleaver. In his farewell... I always cry. Don't forget that 'The Lord of the Rings; The War of the Rohirrim' will be in theaters this December. Thranduil's mention of Strider is interesting and points out the differences between the films and the books. In Tolkien's legendarium, Aragorn is a 10 year-old child being fostered by Elrond in Rivendell at the time of the Battle of Five Armies. Here, he's older because of the time-compression of the timeline of the films.

Ahh, the end of an era. A little song to send you guys off: "Roads go ever ever on, Over rock and under tree, By caves where never sun has shone, By streams that never find the sea; Over snow by winter sown, And through the merry flowers of June, Over grass and over stone, And under mountains in the moon. Roads go ever ever on Under cloud and under star, Yet feet that wandering have gone Turn at last to home afar. Eyes that fire and sword have seen And horror in the halls of stone Look at last on meadows green And trees and hills they long have known. The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with weary feet, Until it joins some larger way, Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say. The Road goes ever on and on Out from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, Let others follow it who can! Let them a journey new begin, But I at last with weary feet Will turn towards the lighted inn, My evening-rest and sleep to meet."

At 59:08 There is a critical info... Gandalf guessed Bilbo had one of the magic rings but Gandalf didnt even think that ring is the one.. The Sauron's one ring... He though one of the 7 dworfs' ring or nine men's ring.. When Bilbo gave ring the Frodo, Gandalf suspicious the rumors.. Because if you look carefully, the other rings are so ornated but the one was extremely simple and unadorned.. So Gandalf went to Gondor's history archive and searched for the one ring's features.. He got the information that ring can show its sentences while it's heated.. And came back to tell this to Frodo.. There are 17 years between (Gandalf told Frodo "keep it secret, keep it safe" moment) and (went to Gondor and came back to tell Frodo "Get out the shire" moment) ... But at film, we saw this scene like instant moment :D

Guys, if you are into really deep lore and worldbuilding, you cannot go wrong with Tolkien. And the best thing is, there is always more. No matter what you want to know about his world, you can always dive deeper and uncover more detail. You can literally spend a lifetime exploring it all, because he spent a lifetime building it. And good luck finding a book edition that suits you, because there are SO DAMN MANY. To my knowledge, only one Farsi translation exists, and I heard the quality is rather... questionable. So if you're up for it, I'd definitely recommend reading the original.

Several tales of victory and tragedy are caught up in it; but it ends with catastrophe, and the passing of the Ancient World, the world of the long First Age.

This is a random comment but since I came across one of your past reactions I have been trying to scramble my brain at who Anita reminded me of and it finally clicked! She could totally be the sister to Mimi from Jungle 2 Jungle!! This is probably only known to 90s kids 😁 Anywho, a good movie you should see is The Lovely Bones which is also directed by Peter Jackson! Also if you haven’t watched Pirates of the Caribbean 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Some of the goriest parts of this movie are only in the extended cut. The theatrical version has a PG-13 rating but the extended version is rated R. They still had a lot of the battle but the goriest parts were what was added. 42:39 the only time in the whole trilogy that Bombur and Bifur speak, and it's one of the extended scenes. So in the theatrical version they never speak. 1:02:13 the song is called "The Last Goodbye", my favorite of the Lord of the Rings end credits songs and sung by Billy Boyd (Pippin) himself. 1:05:49 that is one of the big complaints for The Hobbit, so much CGI over practical effects where Lord of the Rings was much more practical and prosthetics. They recently announced they are already working on a few more Lord of the Rings movies (unclear exactly how many) with the first currently planned for 2026 and the working title is "The Hunt for Gollum". It's set to star and be directed by Andy Serkis with Peter Jackson producing.

Peter Jackson had a real stroke of luck that he could make the entire LOTR trilogy in one go. Nobody could butt in between the parts, have "clever suggestions", derail the project into a mediocre Hollywood money making recipe. And after that success, Jackson had a ball in his court, he could take this story and do whatever he wanted with it. It wasn't easy, the size of this book is a fraction of that of LOTR so he really had to wing it on those epic battle scenes, plus he and the screenwriters had to come up with some well fitting extra material which isn't in the book, such as Tauriel. Of course, many Tolkien fans simply loathe all that, because it's not canon. As for me - and I'm a big Tolkien nerd - as long as none of it contradicts anything that the Professor wrote, no element is unfitting his created universe (unlike the horrible Rings of Power series, which is as un-Tolkienish as anything can be and as such it's unwatchable to me), I'm fine with it. As for the music - and I'm telling this to you as a musicologist who teaches film music - Howard Jackson's score for both these trilogies are simply the best film scores ever written.

I found some information for you they used 20, 680 extras for the lord of the rings movies. (example for the battle of helmsdeep they 10 thousand orc extras the rest were cgi.) Yes there was abit more CGI for the hobbit than lord of the rings but what is opinion of most fans is that the CGI works because they combine real artifacts as well. Two examples in point: they made an Fangton Forest Set for Lord of the Rings then added CGI. They made lake town set for the Hobbit then added some CGI. NOW to answer an two points you raised. The Drawf Cousin of the Iron Hills (Thorians Cousin) ISNT A CGI character the role was played by actor Billy Connolly they did add CGI for his mount and hammer. Your gf asked (made statement) and i personally apolize for forgetting her name. The making of both Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit is included in the box sets extended verisons (alot of dvds for the making btw) if you purchase those the two of you would find it quite interesting. NOW AN rumor (thou this is probablity true) They are going to release an new box set for all the films at the 25th anniversary which will include even more extended scenes ONE example is Aragorn preparing for march on the black gate. LASTLY April 2025 more of the Lord of the Rings is coming to the big screen. (the war of the rohirrim) and there other projects on the board for JRR Tolkiens work and yes by Jackson. GREAT REACTION as always (hope i was able to provide more context for you) YES YES Read the books you are both going find some interesting differences

There is another call back to LOTR that you missed, outside Erebor when Bard and Thranduil have the Arkenstone, Thranduil says to Bard, "Ecthelion of Gondor will give you a good price for it." This is Ecthelion II, 25th Ruling Steward of Gondor who is the father of Denathor II, grandfather of Boromir and Faramir. Ignore ANY comments saying to watch Rings of Power, that show isn't Tolkien at all. They didn't get much source material use, and made up a lot of stuff, the only thing accurate is it's Middle Earth, it's not Tolkien and not good.

1:09:15 if you guys want to see the story of how the rings were made - plus see younger versions of Galadriel, Elrond, Isildur, and Elendil - and even Sauron as a character(!!) - Rings of Power is right there waiting for you! It gets a lot of unfair hate in my opinion - I think it’s about the same quality as the hobbit movies, and bc you guys liked those so much I think you’d like this too! Plus Season 2 is starting in like 2 weeks so you’re just in time to get in on it!! As a subscriber I’d love to see your reactions to it!

@Jeowyn
@Jeowyn 29 күн бұрын
Elijah Wood was too young for the role of Frodo, isn't a stage-trained actor, and was essentially cast just because he looks cute. When pushed to it, he really couldn't act the way the role required, so we got him squealing, tripping over his own feet, crying and complaining about the Ring for three straight movies. There's no "before the ring ruined him" Frodo, so he's just kind of... pathetic? Even the part where he threatens to cut Gollum's throat in TTT is more silly than scary. IMHO. Martin Freeman *can* act and had way much more balance as a character than just whining, crying and tripping over things. He plays Bilbo as an adult who thinks and behaves like one. Elijah Wood came so, so close to ruining the LOTR films.

its kind of funny how stupid elfs and dwarfs are when it comes to fighting orcs like jumping in front of the spears, while on the other hand the orcs were the best strategist here, they cut them off from escape, they let the tank units be at the front of the charge theyr only mistake was that they didnt wait for elfs and dwarfs to finish their fight

I did not like the scene of the elves joining the battle by leaping over the dwarven line. The script took the world's best archers and threw them into melee combat when they could have just shot arrow after arrow against the orcs behind the dwarven line and when the orcs reached the dwarves, then join the dwarves in melee by attacking from the flank while the dwarves attacked from the front with the pikes.
