Since the game is based around cargo delivery, why not add a time limit to them so it can pair up with the sleep function? The amount of time you sleep depends on how much stamina you’ve spent, so if you’ve spent too much stamina, you’ll have to sleep longer. But if you oversleep due to exhaustion, you can potentially run late for your delivery. That way stamina management becomes a challenge that is part of your routine and with some potential consequences rather than a momentary inconvenience. Note: I haven’t actually played the game, I’m just throwing ideas around.

Your advice on focusing on the Primary Gameplay Loop, I think, can also be applied to any other form of art, really. Though in a more general sense, I'd call it to "Focus on the Framework". I'm not a game designer, though I am an artist, and this is something I wish I learned earlier- I've been drawing all my life, but it wasn't until middle school that i actually started sketching out my drawings before adding details like clothes and backgrounds. Before then, I just drew the lineart from the get-go, and while my character drawings looked okay at the time, looking back at them I realize they suffered from sloppy proportions and "flyswatted" poses because I was mentally "projecting" them onto the paper and "tracing" them. But you can't build something with an imaginary framework. You have to sketch your drawing out to make sure it looks right. And like I said, this goes for all kinds of art- Musicians have to lay out melodies before adding lyrics, sculptors start with simple blobs of clay before carving details, painters start with broad strokes before grabbing the smaller brushes, and so on.

@@connorambrosino1741 Mainly because I feel like the core gameplay loop (i.e. maintaining your ship while in transit) isn't fun since, at least in the demos, there isn't much interesting to do in transit. You can fix or clean the ship, but damage and dirtiness accrue so slowly that you can deal with it before it is becomes a problem. The ship piloting minigame feels very terrible to play since you need to push menu options to move the ship (as opposed to free movement). When trying out every prior demo, what I would sleep until I got the red triangle warning then fix / clean ship before going back to sleep and repeating this process until I got to my destination. I was hoping Yahtzee would do something about it. However, he just seems content to jump around the issue. In this video, Yahtzee says he decided to remove the sleeping mechanic. However, removing sleeping won't change the fact that the core gameplay was so boring that I was using the sleep mechanic to fast forward through it.

If you want a fresh take on the 'can move around the alignment grid' concept in the same vein as your 'alignment' chart from the last video, you should check out the boardgame Role Player. It's a game about building a character (presumably for DND or DND-like things) and it involves an 3x3 alignment grid. Players need to aim for certain alignments determined by their backstory, and over the course of the game they can get actions and buffs that affect/change their alignment when used (for example: an action that lets you change one of your stats will make you move down on the chart, towards evil, every time you use it). If your players can change their alignment, maybe you can make goals that require they have certain ones in order to complete, like quests or certain dialogues. But putting stuff behind 'you must be this apathetic/altruistic/etc' barriers would mean certain things are inaccessible depending on alignment, which would turn Starstruck Vagabond into a "you have to play it multiple times to see every path and option" type game, which isn't necessarily what you're going for. Maybe NPC quests can involve changing THEIR alignment?
@LTGD4 жыл бұрын
You briefly mentioned worrying that the challenge was going away if you remove the Stamina mechanic etc. So, controversially, I'd leave the system in where cargo blocks NPCs. It'd add an element of planning and structure to the cargo loading, like Resident Evil's inventory management. It'd be another small gameplay consideration and gently augment the challenge of the game, and I think it's something players would expect to have to do in a cargo-loading spaceship anyway.

One thing about games like this: a lot of the fun comes from doing "the tasks" but a lot of the rewards tend to "make the tasks easier". So my idea is that your "make-it-easier/quicker" rewards free up enough time for you to get into character development. The increase in tasks efficiency will free up time to get access to story elements. Maybe you can't progress the narrative until you've become efficient enough to make yourself breakfast, clean the whole kitchen and hit the weights for a solid 30 minutes before noon.

The signal could be pulsar coordinates for which scientists send you money or distress signal locations which you amplify. It could play exactly like a fishing minigame.

This is defiantly an idea that wouldn't be implemented until a later stage in development but I think it might be a good idea to avoid giving the player total control over the NPCs. Maybe when the player isn't ordering them they'll wander around the ship on their own and interact with things. I think things like that make characters feel a little bit more real. Similarly, I think games like Spiritfarer, Harvest Moon, Stardew Valley, My Time at Portia, and so on have a really good idea with their NPCs where they occasion do tasks for you or give you free stuff. It's difficult not to like or feel attached to someone that sometimes does your chores or buys you a pizza unprompted.

*RECOMMENDATION FOR THE FUTURE:* Can we have the option to expand our ship? Not just modules that do, "+X to speed." I mean I want to make the *ULTIMATE FREIGHTER SHIP!!!!!* I want to go from having a dinky little ship where I have to put boxes in my BEDROOM, to have a big ship with a juicy cockpit, a dedicated room/rooms for engineering, then I walk out onto a catwalk that shows the SECOND FLOOR OF MY SHIP! Which is entirely dedicated to storage. Then I take an ELEVATOR inside a SHIP that takes me down to the second floor, where I have 60-80 GLORIOUS TILES OF ROOM! WOOOOOO!!!! And I had to pay a BUTTLOAD of cash to afford an addition to my ship this big. Then I PIMP out my storage area with an automated system with conveyor belts that receives, stamps, and plops down boxes. Then, I have a robot NPC (that I purchased) sort all my boxes out and store them for me. Going from sorting and stamping boxes where I sleep, to having a miniature, industrial, empire in my ship! WA HA HA HAAA! WOOOO!!!! And the NPC's can even drop the gear OFF for me as well! This is of course all very expensive and late game stuff. You have to really WORK toward it. So, players can B-line the story, or choose to stay in the world and become the ULTIMATE FREIGHT SHIP! I like building toward bigger and better things. Rimworld, factorio, kingdoms and castles, Endless Space 2, Recettear, these are all great examples of, "You start with a penny and a coat button, and build up to a gigantic empire."

I've always liked the idea of stamina management systems in simulation gameplay but whenever I'm forced to deal with them I find them intrusive and annoying. Maybe it's because a game should encourage me to play it, not force me to take breaks every so often. If stamina is treated more like a resource that can be refilled by taking certain actions, or there are options to switch to other characters or at least do stuff that doesn't require stamina while it recharges, that helps with the problem.

I do think the bed could work if the mechanics of it are changed. Instead of going to bed and regaining all your energy when you wake up how about this, the bed functions more like the pool in Stardew Valley? In Stardew Valley if you run out of stamina you have two choices, either go to the pool where you slooooooowly regain stamina, or waste resources to get food to refill it. If I am stingy as hell or low on what I need to make food I probably will go to the pool and slowly regain my stamina, or search for berries. And if I have resources and money I will likely eat food. So what if you slowly gained stamina while lying down on the bed, slightly faster than you do ordinarily but not much. Then the player has to consider whether they want to save up the food by resting, or do they want to get more done and instead of resting they eat. And that moment of waiting to regain the stamina will leave the player alone with their thoughts, and give them a breather to contemplate the themes of the game or their place in the universe... Or they could listen to podcasts.

Waiting times for crew task seems like its edging towards an afkish mobile game. As long as it doesn't become a major mechanic.... I guess something like cooking mama waiting times would be perfect, look how well that game did

Oh lol, I thought it was just a placeholder and you hadn’t worked out what you wanted the face to look like yet.

You've already got a gender neutral character with Starscream. A He is a robot, and therefore by all physiological standards, has no gender, save what we arbitrarily ascribe to him. (which I myself am doing here for simplicity's sake) B He has been played by female and male voice actors, depending on what country/language the show was aired in. (the French version was female, I believe) C He has been portrayed with feminine traits in actual canon stories as a deliberate joke by the writers about his vague gender qualities.

I wouldn’t skip sleeping, but definitely would make cleaning less frequent. It would give much more satisfaction to the player imo.

Just use both the male and female examples, maybe even add a third, as other comments have pointed out it would increase the likelyhood that people would recognize at least one of them.

If you don't keep the stamina mechanic, how are you going to squeeze the players for their irl money? Arf, arf...

Ok question, especially concerning your positions on the idea of modding in the past. Would you be willing to include some kind of mod support for this game at some point and/or are you against others polishing any of the games presented in this series?

I think you should change the title font. It looks to different from how the rest of the game looks
