I believe the meaning is more figurative and not as literal as you expressed, although that could be a specific example. By "he's my brother", I believe he's talking about humanity and people in general. Loving each other and helping those in need. Bearing and easing some of their life's burdens and saying that even though helping someone else may be somewhat of a burden to you, it's not too heavy a burden to bear to help someone who i may be down and out and just needs a helping hand.

And regardless of whether they do or not, having a Number 2 in the US doesn't make it their most successful song. It merely makes it their most successful song in ONE country. If they sell 100,000 copies of a song in the US and 100,000 copies elsewhere, it doesn't make that song as successful as one that sold 50,000 in the US but 400,000 elsewhere. That's simple mathematics.
