This poem always spoke to me given his life during World War I and after I experienced combat in Iraq. I saw a good friend of mine struggling to breathe after getting shot. I could feel death over my shoulder as my friend gasped for breath and I truly felt that we were the hollow men, out in the field to do our job but always waiting as death stalked us and reminded us how easily life can slip away. And when a friend drew his last breath, I understood what it meant when he said this is the way the world ends, not with a bang but with a whimper.😮

What a fantastic insight into The Hollow Men. It is Guy Fawkes tonight in the UK and Eliot was intrigued by the stuffed effigies he saw, hence the opener A penny for the Old Guy. He also refs Guy Fawkes attempt at arson on the Houses of Parliament and the possible death of King James. Im in Japan at the moment and Murakami refs the poem in Kafka on the Shore. He alludes to people who don't understand it as Hollow Men!! Recently Kenneth Branagh did reference it in the movie Tenet.

You take the stuffing to be an acrimonious label for orthodox religious beliefs? You could not be more wrong. That is little more than shoehorning this poem into your modern “spiritual” views. What an outlandish comment to make regarding this poem by TS Eliot.

If you listen to her take on the poem and sincerely believe that Eliot was lumping traditional Christian believers with the hollow men then you yourself, along with her, are truly the hollow men. She hasn’t a clue about TS Eliot to give this take. Or worse… she has a clue and simply thinks her own individual view of all things spiritual is more salient.

In no way did this video open up the poem to me. The video is cold, sterile, academic and to me futhers the distance between the poem and myself.
