The newly developed 24 valve “KN20” head by Datsunworks has arrived in Thailand! B&T Performance Retro have mounted it onto a race spec Datsun/Nissan L28 engine and the result is totally sensational!
This custom cylinder head is #16 of the build programme for this unique new 24 valve head developed by Florida company Datsunworks that has achieved the dream of tuners across the world for decades.
It sources a mix of parts from the Honda K20’s cylinder head (hence the KN20 name) and draws on other Nissan parts, including the timing system, as well as including custom components, such as the camshafts, to create something that’s very special.
The “Holy Grail” head goes onto a specially designed L28 bottom end which includes custom made Traum pistons, Kameari crank and con rods and a high flow oil pump as well as custom made oil sump and inlet and exhaust manifolds (designed for the engine’s tilted application) and full bespoke exhaust system.
I check this amazing engine out, give you the lowdown and see it in action mounted on a special engine test rig at B&T Performance Retro.
And when you find out what car this is going into you will be shocked! But I will leave that surprise for the video!

O.S Giken made a twin cam head for the L-engine in the late 70s. So whilst it's cool, it's not the first productionised head to be made for the L-engine.

Yeah, but while the OS Giken head is amazing, that one costed 30k before inflation. This one is 10k.

@@XionAzura1 Incorrect. The head was 18k ready to bolt on. But that was a precovid price. I have had many telephone conversations with Derek as well as emails. I am still in line for one. But I am enjoying my LS/ supercharged swapped series 1 240z. I will eventually get to the Datsunworks/L28 project

@@XionAzura1 Yup but the OS giken is a piece of art, has a power output of 420hp and revs up to 10k rpm... and well most important thing for me, it sounds 10 times better than the datsunworks... like the datsunworks sounds amazing, but the sound is very similar to the K20 its derived from... the os giken sounds like a L28 that never stops reving.

Wow. Honestly I feel that the L-series engines should have as big an aftermarket as the Chevy small block. I wish they did, outstanding work!

I have to admit, that 24 valve cylinder head for the L28 looks super cool indeed! Definitely something you don't see everyday. Also, looking forward to seeing that L28 installed into the Hakosuka.^^

Reminds me of the guy on various dato forums way back, he cut up a few Nissan KA24 heads, welded them together, ditto cams, modified sprockets etc, and slapped it onto a L28, he showed it could be done and kinda re-popularized the 24v legend. OS Giken heads can still be had, brand new, but they don't go good for them unless they get to build the whole engine, so they want a core block, probably looking at a year long process. I checked Datsunworks pricing, around the 15-20k mark, at that point a complete motor from OS Giken makes more sense, but they're also around 30k. 24v L-series is a dream for many, but not feasible at 1 grand per valve, and with the power you get from a Rebello-style SOHC build (which is just shy off the power you get from an OS Giken ) you're not really looking at gains all that massive, it's more for clout/showmanship than anything else IMO. The best way would be to make a mold and cast these things, then do final machining, it'll save you from truing up every head from the welding process, just put into a machine, find center, boom. This would enable the heads to be offered at a price in the atmospheric region where humans survive, sorta like the muscle v8 scene where you can get hi flow heads for next to nothing in comparison. Then offer the head with innards, timing chain and tensioners, add ports for high pressure fuel injection so the turbo & ITB crowd is well pleased, offer injector plugs for those electing to run standoff's (racing) or carbs (vintage), you'd be covering every L-series niche with one fell swoop.

Agree with all those points, yes. 24v L is a dream scenario but the pricing and process is pretty high and makes it a bit unobtainable. And you need a lot of knowledge and skill to build the Datsunworks head up. But still, it's good there are options. And it really is a show head too.

It's nice. Twin cam, crossflow, the kept the exhaust on the original side for normal fitting in Datsun cars, neato. Although, could've bee gear driven. Sill can't beat the sound of an N42 head at the exhaust.

All C10-series Skylines are 'Hakosukas'. ALL. I don't understand your "genuine HakoSooker" comment. What does it mean? Either a car is a C10-series Skyline, or it isn't.

One guy did a mild tune and got 430 @ flywheel, on pumpgas. But apparently needed a lot of work on intake, headers, cams & sprockets. With 24v you're looking at 30-40k

It sounds like a big honda instead of a l28. I hate it and love it at the same time. Awesome idea, followed through flawlessly. Probably adds reliability and power across the band, although Probably about as expensive as an rb swap. But something just odd about having a honda head on a nissan.

i kind of hear the same,soundwise, it also comes to mind it sound more Jaguar ish than Nissan when i see the earlier Kn20 videoes,but the whole production is Top quality wise & love that some actually have the opportunities to create such conversions for the old non cross heads :-) ,to be honest im afraid also this Kn20 head conversion would be more expensive than an RB swap & when it comes to DOHC converting of the L Series it is Os Giken TC24 B1z conversion that sounds most right on the L series too me,& more like an S-20 on steroids imo, but none of these conversions comes free 😃in the end we should just be happy it exist such,im not in the marked anyway 😅& have to be grateful & having fun with my B110 Sunny it could be worse :-)

The head is from "Datsunworks" who you can contact, I'm not sure they build up complete engines also.

what are you even saying? if its a C10 Skyline, a sedan, two door, six cylinder, four cylinder, its a Hakosuka. There is no such thing as a genuine hakosuka.

he means that it's a genuine gtr. just like not all r34s are gtr spec its the same with the hakosuka. From memory, i think theres only 500 or so gtrs left in the world.

There is zero reason to spend the money for this untested head . What has been reported is the 7 main bearing L short block is not bullet proof at all.

Its kind of stupid. You spend $15k+ to change pretty much the entire motor, just to say it is a "nissan L motor". Well it really isn't anymore now is it? So why not save $13k and just get the KA or RB?
