Barking Garage open day, 23rd, March 2024, celebrating 100 years of the shed. Buses on display, plus vintage rides on routes 62 and 145, if I hear different I will let you know. Also, in the autumn, Bromley Garage, (TB), is 100 years old, and there will be an open day there as well, with bus rides on a couple of routes. Top marks to Stagecoach London for doing these sort of events.

Past Open Days were great fun looking around and taking free bus rides around locally on the established routes. Barking Bus Garage was home to the very last RT route being the 62 which gave the honour to the oldest RT on the books being RT624. The bus then ran into the shed with a cavalcade of other RTs including the first one RT1. London Transport waited until April 1979 to coincide with 40 years since the RT was unveiled in April 1939 having given London magnificent service for those four decades. My Grandfather worked out of BK around 100 years ago so I’ll have to be there for the centenary celebration in March.

Barking Garage is near enough 100 years old. It was one of the first to be given a geographical code , BK, a nearby one, Hornchurch was RD, (Romford area). Before that, codes were more or less a random code like Q for Camberwell, AR for Tottenham, X for North Kensington Middle Row, you get the idea/ The front corner of the Garage by South Park Drive was an entrance/exit believe it or not, how would that work today? Plenty of cine films from April 1979 are around when the shed ran the very last RT type buses on Route 62. Thousands of people turned up to see off the last of the largest standard bus fleet of all time, 7000 odd compared with the 3000 Routemasters made.
