I'm. Catholic. My reading of the gospels tells me that Jesus knew the Samaritans for a long time. He knew and understood them but never condemned them. He used the parable of the Good Samaritan - Christendom will forever remember Samaritans in the figure of the Good Samaritan. Poignant is the story of the Samaritan woman at the well. She had a kind heart that longed for understanding and mercy. Did Jesus give these to her? He sure did. The Samarirans here in the video almost glow in their piety and deep spirituality. As someone who’s directly related to this group of people; family left that area during the Ottoman Empire five generations back even to this day retain the physical characteristics Arab/ Middle Eastern look for myself and certain close relatives after all the intermarriage that happened within my family ( fathers mother) . Certainly in the latter period the Jews were already mixed a bit, after absorbing converts from Anatolia and Amazigh Berbers. Ben-Zonah, the moral of all these facts combined is that you should never dismiss some people until you can be sure you won't be citing hogwash while doing it.

DNA testing shows that the purest people in ancient Levantine type ancestry in what is today Israel and Palestine are the Samaritans and Palestinian Christians. Both are around 90%. Then muslim Palestinians at around 70%. Then all the Jews come next with Mizrahi and Sephardi around 60% and Ashkenazi around 50% (Ashkenazis are just as European as they are Levantine). If we are to include other Levantines, then Lebanese, Syrian and Jordanian Christians are similar to Samaritans and Christian Palestinians in percentage of native Levantine ancestry while muslim versions of each of those are similar to muslim Palestinians. I don’t quote hogwash, I’m much too informed in archaeogenetics to do that. That’s for laymen, which I’m not.

Shomronim doesn't mean guardians. That would be "shomrim". Shomronim just means Samaritans. Shomron is Samaria (the geographic region). The Hebrew word for guard is "shomer".

The Samaritans are decedent of Israelites same as Jews. Both Jews and Samaritans originated from Canaanites around 1200 BCE (there is some debate among archaeologist to the exact time). The Israelites had a separate kingdom north of Jerusalem (Samaria) called the kingdom of Israel and in Jerusalem the kingdom of Judah. Both had roughly the same religion but few differences. Around 740 BCE the Assyrian empire exiled the Israelites but probably left a few around the kingdom. Later the Jews were exiled too and at some point the Babylonian let the Jews to go back to their kingdom and build the second temple. When they came back they found the Samaritans and they didn't believe them that they're the Israelites. So in short both Jews and Samaritans originated from the same people around the same time. Also the Samaritans as Jews used ancient Hebrew before the Assyrian exile but the Jews adopted the Aramaic alphabet when they were in exile. That's why Samaritans still use ancient Hebrew to some extent. As a Jew I think that we need to do anything in our power to preserve their tradition and culture.

There were only 150 Samaritans in 1967 according to their own records. There are now 820. They have been facing problems with inherited diseases due to a small gene pool and have been more open to accepting female converts (from Ukraine) in an effort to preserve their population. Their situation now is actually better than it was in the past century. The "four families" are actually tribal references, none have gone extinct in living memory.
