The Kurds are an ancient and noble people who are now the primary “boots on the ground” against ISIS in the Middle East. They are 35 million strong worldwide, the largest people group on earth without their own homeland. In this stirring talk, Stephen Mansfield tells the story of the Kurds and does so, surprisingly, through the lives of three women.
Stephen Mansfield is a New York Times bestselling author who first rose to global attention with his groundbreaking book, The Faith of George W. Bush, a bestseller that Time magazine credited with helping to shape the 2004 U.S. presidential election. He has written celebrated biographies of Barak Obama, Booker T. Washington, George Whitefield, Winston Churchill, Pope Benedict XVI, and Abraham Lincoln, among others. Mansfield’s latest book, The Miracle of the Kurds, is a timely introduction to the Kurdish people that reached bookstores just as Kurdish troops began standing heroically against the evils of ISIS in the Middle East. The book has been named “Book of the Year” by Rudaw, the leading Kurdish news service.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

My opinion as an arabin is that the independencey of a kurdish state is a bad idea for kurds and other Muslims because it's going to spilt up many Islamic countries which would lead to the weakening of the Islamic world in a time that the Islamic world is in a fragile state. The Islamic world should stand side by side and not get into civil wars and violence. Forget about what the west says because the west supports the Israelis and everyone knows so obviously they aren't going to be in the side that benefit Muslims they want to separate them. So my advice to my kurds brother sunnies Alavis and shias that you don't get tricked by the west and stand strongly with your Muslims brothers.

I think that Iraq should have a smilir system for what's in beilgm and Lebanon they're are multiple ethnicities but each one of them has the same amount of rights in the country. I think Iraq should learn from that and learn from their lebanese neighbors and their experiences in being diverse.

@@ahmedalfaraj2808 I don't think it needs to be religious based really, nor do I think that's relevant to independence of Kurdish people. The teacher I had was Muslim, but many of the Arab teachers were Christian, and there were also many Christian Kurds... I believe that Kurdish people should be able to govern themselves, and it's kind of a tragedy that such a people gets subjugated due to arbitrary lines on a map. I'm okay with Iraq allowing the Kurdish region some independent self government, and encourage the same in Iran, turkey, and Syria as well, and if there is an opportunity for a Kurdish state, I would say that it would be incumbent on the Arab states to allow it to form and make it an ally. Nothing says a Kurdish state needs to be an enemy.

I'm a Bakurî Kurd living in London and seeing this Ted Talk amongst all these beautiful comments full of solidarity assures me that we are gaining more and more friends worldwide, day by day. Please tell our stories, please educate yourselves and your friends on who we are. For many years our identity was denied to the point that even I, as a Kurd raised in Turkey, don't know how to speak Kurdish. This hurts and is why the support from Non-Kurds means the world. We exist, help us let that be known.

My dear friend, as a kurd it's very sad to not be able to speak your mother tongue. But to be honest with us as Kurd, isn't not much sad that kurdish people born abroad and they have never lived in Turkey but they speak fluent Turkish and they can't speak couple of Sentences in kurdish? Wo should be blamed for that? Not Turkish state for sure.

Hi Bruna, yes they are a blessing from God. I wrote earlier on here how the 3 wise men were Kurds. Also, as I mentioned earlier on here, the Kurds are mentioned a lot in the bible and they are highly favored by God, just like you said. Like I said ealier, just google "Kurds in the bible" or "Kurds in bible prophecy". You'll see what I mean. The Kurds are the ancient Medes mentioned in the bible.

I am a Iranian-speaking Persish, my father was a history teacher, he always said that the Kurds are the main owners of Iran, and we Persians and Kurds are cousins to each other, my father said, but unfortunately, the proud history of the Kurds from many schools and universities is deliberately and systematically removed, but if anyone wants to look for the real history of the Kurds, they should know that the Middle East, in all its glory, owes a lot to the Kurds.

I read a minority report on the Kurds when I was about eleven, that was over half a century ago. I was always curious about what shaped the conflicts at the heart of the ancient lands in the Middle East . That women have always been influential in Kurdish society interested me. In north London I came to have several female friends of Kurdish origin. Including female fighters. I was active as a tutor and also in a women’s group active on politics of that war torn region . It is odd that many westerners have a false image of the role of women in many none western lands. Part of the propaganda that shields western policies from criticism in reality !

I'm Iranian and just found this very informative. I'm glad my Iranian-Kurdish friend shared this. I know I should appreciate how much Kurds would like to get separated from Iran and get their independence along with Kurds from neighbouring countries, but my selfish side really wants to have this amazing group of people still among us, borders of Iran. I really hope current government do as much as possible for Kurds - they deserve to live a peaceful life. Beautiful culture beautiful people, stay strong against enemies...

I’ve been fascinated by the history of Kurds and at the same time deeply saddened by their suffering for centuries at the hands of occupiers of their land. But it’s inevitably more saddening when I think of how and why such an historic and large number of people could not have their own state. As Tigrayan American I relate their history with Tigray. know many Kurds in California, I go to their restaurant. They are nice people, I like their culture and food. They have survived mass killings, repression and attempts to exterminate them and I hope one day they will get their free state of Kurdistan.

Carduchoi in Xenophon A people called the Carduchoi are mentioned in Xenophon's Anabasis. They inhabited the mountains north of the Tigris in 401 BC, living in well-provisioned villages. They were enemies to the king of Persia,[10] as were the Greek mercenaries with Xenophon, but their response to thousands of armed and desperate strangers was hostile. They had no heavy troops who could face the battle-hardened hoplites, but they used longbows and slings effectively, and for the Greeks the "seven days spent in traversing the country of the Carduchians had been one long continuous battle, which had cost them more suffering than the whole of their troubles at the hands of the king [of Persia] and Tissaphernes put together."[11] They have been also mentioned as Gordi by Hecataeus of Miletus c. 520 BC.

You should understand the term peaceful. When I say peaceful I talke about how Brave the Peshmerga fighters are fighting the worlds biggest threat, ISIS. I am speaking of the Kurdish struggle and their way to fight terrorism!! this is why the Kurdish people are peaceful in many ways. And what you are bringing up is not what Kurds was willing to but forced to by the terrorist state Turkey who did not only betrayed Kurds but also made Christians fight against Christians. You must understand the truth behind every genocide and why it happened not just mention Kurds and say what they did, but the truth is that Turks would invade Kurdistan if Kurds didn't take action. Turkey is the terrorist state controlled by Erdogan, why don't u ask turks why they killed so many christians and Kurds. you should be ashamed questioning this because all the world now know that Kurds are peaceful people who are fighting for peace in the Middle East, and thanks for the Peshmerga, they've achieved huge success over isis and will continue fighting for equality and justice!!

GreeKurd Channel No I am not ashamed to question this. Turkey has sinned against us too, don't get me wrong, but don't go telling me you were forced to help the Turks, that is total bullshit. You have done things against us Assyrians many other times as well, not just in 1915. You are stealing our lands, our culture and our history claiming it as your own when it never was. The west praised the Kurds but they don't ever mention the atrocities they have committed to Assyrians. You do not have any cultural/historical rights to Assyrian land so the whole basis of your Kurdistan is obsolete.

"The Kurds are the Peaceful People!!" there are 2 meanings to this statement 1.) kurds are the only peaceful people meaning others are not peaceful or 2.) "the peaceful people" can be used synonymously for kurds . both cases are utter nonsense. the correct thing to say is "kurds are peaceful" people that can be said for any other people in the world as a reasonable assumption. but you cannot claim peacefulness for your own people and exclude everyone else from peacefulness just to match your goal of justifying a kurdish state. it takes more than that. if kurds were all peaceful first of all they wouldn't commit terror on a daily basis. i do not know of any other people who promote so numerous terror organizations and get away with it.

One of the nicest (and most genuine) people I ever met in Iraq was a Kurdish translator. As you might imagine, this sparked a personal interest in his people. I'm a bit surprised that the presenter didn't mention the most famous Kurd of all time. An-Nasir Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub (more commonly known in the West as Saladin) is one of those individuals that is truly larger than life. Whatever your position on the Crusades, it's hard to argue that he was a phenomenally successful leader that was (surprisingly) respected by his enemies as well as his followers.

( rather unusualy my friends family was entirely athiest other than his mother who rarely practiced Islam ). my friend and his family often give me an interesting view point on common stories having left Kurdistan after the issues with Sadam Hussein his doctor later became a doctor and is now a orthopedic surgeon. anyway, have no idea why I typed this but it was interesting

Yes but there needed to be a clarification there, he makes a point about the Arab side, Persian side somewhere later but his main statement about this trip and love for the Arab world is confusing.

No they are 60 million in population They are secular, tolerant, believes in gender equality and democratic, This adds on to the reason why World Should support them If they were a country, then it literally would have been a gem in desert All their neighbours are communal and authoritarian I support Kurds ,they deserve for what they struggled

As a southern Kurd, watching this was very interesting. I think this is a accurate depiction of Halabja, we're always very nice with foreign people, it is very diverse and you will see various different dialects, foods, and cultures. we're always very cheerful. another tragedy was Anphal. they literary berried Kurds alive, but we still have stayed strong for centuries.

Very interesting - that presentation from 2016 needs a refresh after the incredible disaster perpetrated by DT. These people have earned and deserve our respect and support for all time. I hope that we can turn this around and get back to a strong and healthy partnership with the Kurdish people. We need more talks and presentations like this occurring in every town in America; especially in the areas that currently support DT. Show them the humanity, resilience, ingenuity & dignity and they must surely come to understand this terrible mistake. Maybe trail DT at his political rallies with outreach messaging to change the minds and attitudes of his followers.

My wife and I, together with Pakeza Alexander, started the Kurdish Humanitarian Organization, in Nashville, in the late 80s and continued into the early 90s, to provide relief, clothes, job interviews and showing the area to the first groups of Kurdish people arriving to Nashville. My wife and Pakeza created and published, at their own expense, the first Kurdish/English dictionary. Kurdish people are honest, hard working, intelligent and proud beings and they deserve their own independent country. All the best. Adriano and Judith Rosso at Cascina Rosso in Roccaverano, Italy
