People don’t realize that these aren’t regular bags. I couldn’t justify buying them because that’s not me but the bags are real estate. They are rare and handmade and go up in value every year which is why people who have money justify buying them, collecting them, and storing them. It’s a literal investment. Other designer bags are nowhere near as valuable as these, in fact other designer bags go down in value. These go up which is why they are a big deal.

Chanel goes up in value. So does Bottega. LV limited releases usually sell for more than their original retail value as well. This is why designer bags all around are considered a good investment if you understand the resell market. And it's definitely not only Hermes that has value on the resell market. In fact, the price of those bags are so high it's only a small amount of people who can afford them compared to other brands that have an oppurtunity to reach more people.

Kimberly Portillo they can lose value overnight just like anything can. They are only ever worth what people feel they are worth. Far too many people fail to realize this. So many items have lost value swiftly and people lose all of their money. Particularly with items like this that serve no purpose

@@EmpressLilith222 I think with the Birkin, like she was saying they do typically retain and even gain value over time. Hermes makes people jump thru hoops to purchase those bags. That being said unless the Birkin is one of those unique ones it may very likely sit on the resell market a long time before selling because of the price point and amount of people who can afford it.

Actually, the story of Jane Birkin in the plane has been said so many times, it left out the real details. Jane Birkin’s partner at the time Jacques Doillon, ran over Jane Birkin’s iconic straw basket tote and she had to use another bag, it wasn’t the best bag, it was probably a scarf turned into a bag, the way Jane Birkin describes it. What actually fell was her diary. Jean Louis Dumas told her that “her diary should have pockets” and Jane Birkin said “I will when Hermes makes one with pockets” and then Dumas introduced himself. The topic of bags came after the talk of the leather agenda/diary. Jane Birkin lamented at how current leather handbags in the market were too small and not big enough, she said to Mr. Dumas “why don’t you make a bag bigger than the Kelly but smaller than a man’s suitcase?” And then Jane Birkin drew the kelly but “three times bigger” on the barf bag, and the rest is history. Edit: I decided to comment this just because the story has been said so many times but excluded some interesting details, meanwhile I’ve actually looked up several interviews and videos of jane birkin enough to know what are the real details of the story. As a personal fan of her music, movies and her long-time then partner, Serge Gainsbourg, and read a lot on her life, I felt it would be nice to add a more detailed retelling of the Birkin bag’s history. PS. The Birkin was indeed modelled after the HAC (Haut á Courroies) bag from Hermes. Jane Birkin specifically said “why don’t you make a bag bigger than the Kelly, but bigger than Serge’s bag” Serge Gainsbourg’s bag was a HAC

It’s always entirely possible that people will lose interest in these items and feel they are no longer worth what they once were and the cost plummets. It’s happened to many things throughout history. One can purchase one of these bags and lose their entire investment

you sound like someone who learned about birkins from jeffree star. A high class birkin (150,000+) has an appreciation rate of about 14% a year IF kept pristine. The majority of these bags are of value of around 12,000 though so most people aren't buying them for that

My purse is from Sears of Seattle. The deluxe stitching was done in a small village in China. It features a buttery, faux leather body with elegant gold-like accents. The strap, which matches almost perfectly with the bag, can be lengthened or shortened to maximize the enjoyment of carrying the purse. I don't know if Hermes does it, but some other luxury brands BURN their bags instead of putting them EVER on sale!!! Isn't that crazy! I learned it in a luxury brand course I took and researched it a bit because I thought it was crazy. SOme brands they can't put their bags on sale because it lowers the value of the brand( sometimes they have private sales though for employees to purchase) but it is .crazy when brands like Hermes takes about craftsmenship and stuff and then goes and destroys their product.

The Kelly has a more trapezoidal shape than the Birkin and features a single handle. Unlike the Birkin (where the flap can be open or closed), the Kelly, due to its single top handle, always must be carried with the flap securely closed.
