I Say Old Chaps! Join me on the home front as we talk about the Local Defence Volunteers or LDV, a make shift militia formed just a few weeks before the evacuation of Dunkirk. Using whatever weapons they could lay their hands on from golf clubs, shotguns, pikes and shovels. Often known by locals as "Look, Duck and Vanish". How the Home Guard developed from a make shift militia in a well trained army preparing to counter attack and defend BLIGHTY from imminent German invasion.
We cook corned beef fritters, a staple back in 1940 when rations were sparce.
Thank you for watching ! And of you like this please do like and subscribe... There's a war on don't you know!

RECIPE Corned Beef Fritters just like your Nan made in 1940 2 oz of flower and a pinch of salt 1 egg yolk or 1/2 reconstituted egg. 70ml of milk A pinch of dried herbs 6oz of corned beef finely chopped 1 teaspoon of grated onion 1 oz of clarified dripping, lard or cooking fat. Mix flour with salt, egg and milk. Make a batter then add the herbs and onion. Melt the dripping in a frying pan and get very hot. Drop spoonfuls of batter in to pan and cook both sides until crisp and brown. Serve with a brown sauce.

I say Giles Old Chap! ruddy splendid to receive your transmission on the wireless and thanks awfully for watching. As it transpires the Home Guard are a hard bunch and unlike the Dad's Army depicted. I supposed one has to be if the buck stops firmly with them and the threat of Jerry being very real. I'd love to meet one of them and might in the next video ;-) Might even do another corned beef dish. Tally-Ho my friend.

Last year on a Facebook History group for my home town that I follow, some one posted a picture of a local home guard unit. In the picture happened to be my great grandfather and one of my great uncle's who was in the Home Guard prior to call up. As a kid I remember staying at my grandparents and Nan making fritters pretty much the same as your recipe, and also out of tuna and mashed potato. Nan is still alive at 95 and my mother says still never throws out any food scraps out and never lets anything go to waste. Anyway sorry to waffle old chap. Sending you best wishes from the Dominions Downunder 🇦🇺. I hope to try some of your range at some point.

Thanks awfully for intercepting our transmission Old Chap! What an incredible sequence of events about your Great Grandfather and Great Uncle being in that photograph. It often makes we wonder and fascinates me how many people from that era that we see in photographs we are linked to. Arguably, all of them and they live on in us today. God bless your Nan still going strong at 95 and maybe using up what we have contributes to healthy long life. I think there is something in that and that generation that we need to learn from today. Could be diet but I think it's the mindset and tenacity of that generation. Thanks for watching, your comments and good wishes from down under and mine by return from Blighty. Tally-Ho! TSD

What ho! Just found this channel, and I was horrified!!! I'd forgotten all about corned beef fritters. My gran made tons of them for us back in the 1970's. They came back on me (heartburn etc) so often I called it "repeat meat". We'd be sent to the butchers for a half pound of corned beef. We'd wait till the shop was empty before asking for it. Asking for corned beef in front of folk was an embarrassing admission that you were skint, as it was so cheap. It's not cheap now! My gran would turn in her grave at the price. TBH, I preferred spam fritters. I've got one of those cookers in a can (no spares tin), but I've never had the courage to try it. It's been on my bookshelf for about 20 odd years. Nice video. Thanks.

@@thesteakdetective Crikey Old Bean, that was last year, How about you remind me what type of Stove it is and I'll put on my boffins lab coat and have a rummage in the old grey matter. Was it an old Primus of some sort. They usually need a damn good clean and getting them working is all in the priming. If you have any info let me have it and we can carry on from there to stovey victory. Got to dash, bally tuppeny ones dropping in the custard, cabbage crates over the briney, hey ho pip and dandy ;)
