I worked overseas, also got married during this time - for a total of 20 years. We lived in about 7 countries. The grass always looks greener on the other side but believe me, challenges can be just as hard or harder than here in SA. We came back 8 yrs ago and adjusted well. My husband is not a SA-can but obtained permanent residence status. He talks about SA as his country and feels more at home here than anywhere else. He has British, Austrian, and Israeli citizenship yet prefers SA. In SA people are more friendly and hospitable, yes, we have our bad spots in every culture group, but people are generally more accepting and warm.

I live in Joburg, I have never lived outside the country except when i'm on holiday. I remember this one time i was out the country for almost 2 weeks, when i came back and that plane landed at O.R Tambo i had this incredible feeling of just being home, then you step out the plane and start hearing the local accent, the familiarity of it all, there is no other feeling like it i promise you. Just hearing an eita or a hola or a howzit oh man, its a simple greeting that's part of your DNA, it touches your soul 🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦🇿🇦

People in the UK had to decide between eating or staying warm since the electricy is so expensive. Thats shocking for a first world country. In a country like the US there are no labour laws. Your boss can decide to fire you for no reason, you wouldn't have any recourse. So workers there are in a constent state of fear. The grass isn't always greener.

Even though I lived a grand lifestyle but it was not home.My heart was still here in SA . Covid was my deciding factor to return home to be with my family . SA is a wonderful country .. the government needs to get it's act together so that more people will want to stay , especially the younger generation.

A truth that people have omitted to mention is the absence of cheap domestic labour abroad to allow people to continue to maintain lifestyles of minor royalty. Full time maids, nannies, gardeners, drivers etc are the preserve of the very wealthy abroad. You have to look after your own children, tend your own garden, clean your own house, wash and iron your own clothes or pay reasonably for someone else to do so. The perennially pampered and lazy cannot cope, particularly if they are balancing that with full time work or running a business.

Two cleaners who come in once a week is in no way comparative to the full time domestic helper who usually lives on the premises and works from morning until night cleaning a home in its entirety, preparing meals, feeding pets, and looking after children, who is found in even an average income South African home. Artificial grass instead of real grass because artificial doesn't require tending and the associated costs and time. The last time I hired a nanny, which was 10 years ago the going rate was £180 -£250 a week for Mon to Fri 8-6 including two nights of babysitting a month. We also had to provide high quality room and board within our home, an ensuite room, not some sub-standard domestic quarters. Weekend work was paid hourly as an extra and nanny means nanny, no house work included outside of preparation of children's meals. My gardener costs £12 p/h. Nursery fees are not free for 25 hours a week, that's an outright lie, unless you are getting some sort of state handout as a single parent, and even those kinds of benefits have been severely reduced in the best case scenarios or abolished entirely, in the worst case scenario, since the conservatives came to power in 2008. One certainly can have servants etc and live a life of relative ease in the UK, but you have to be wealthy to do so. Unlike South Africa where labour is so cheap that every Tom, Dick and Harriet can afford to hire some poor poverty waged soul to wait on them hand and foot. That's the truth of the matter.

In other countries, people are fully capable of taking care of their own properties and children. That’s not a downside, unless you are inept. No offense, but you kind of just made South Africans sound pretty disassociated from reality. At least the ones who take advantage of the extreme inequality in your country so they don’t have to do chores. Just a reminder that countries without extreme inequality is a good thing. I've been out of SA for 17 years now ,living in Sydney. I miss home and the ppl but there's also so much more here that I enjoy. My kids were born here so I can't imagine them living in SA. The crime and lack of freedom is not worth it for us. Cost of living is very high but the standard of living is worth every cent. My heart still lies in SA but peace of mind keeps me here. Here's an expat always rooting for SA to get better.

I am a Namibian living in the UK, and I can not relate to other Africans missing home. Namibia is a great country and I initially left to do my masters ( which is one year in the UK rather than the two years in Namibia). But I have stayed on after my studies, and honestly, I am not home sick , I can also easily go back home and not miss life in UK either. I think the fact that I left my hometown at the age of 6 and have since lived in 6 different places in Namibia made me how I am. I am a drifter ,never truly attached to one place, never too sad to leave people behind.

Yes there are some going back from NZ to SA, but they are relatively few. I know maybe 50 people who have gone to NZ. Some have moved on. Some moved to Australia, some to Canada, but only 3 went back to SA.

Its not for everyone for sure but for me living in a safer country, getting to experience another culture and language has been great. My family left for Australia many years ago due to crime and the general degeneration of the country. They will never come back. My daughter left in Oct also due to crime as well as no work opportunities because of her skin coulour. They are sò happy and doing sè well. They will never come back. My youngest daughter and husband also on their way. They can not wait to get onto that plane get leave the lawlessnes and destruction behind. When they are all there I will be the last remaining relative so I will be able to join them there. I love my country but hate the covernemt and what they allowed to happen here. Total lawlessness and not to mention them being the sole reason none of the parastatals work anymore causing havoc with the infrastructure and general wellbeing of the country and citizens. I will miss my home. But I will never miss the mess the government causes us to live in. It is shamefull how they drive people out. But the serious lack of foresight, planning, accountability and logic when it comes to decision making makes life untenable in Soutb Africa

What I've learnt as an expat is that you need to appreciate what you have. Face the challenges you have at home and find a way to solve those challenges. Running away doesn't solve anything, you might havr the same or even worse challenges away from home. Changing of location doesn't change anything but a change of attitude changes your situation.

There is no other place on Earth like South Africa. There's a magnetism to this country that draws people here. Most people want to come back but can't because of the current destructive government. Once it's gone a lot of people will come back & a lot of those first world country citizens will move here. Life in SA does not have to be so difficult for any South African. We have all of the ingredients needed to become a first world country except for a professionalized state which is the most important one. It's true the grass is not always greener overseas. I know from experience and yes your money does stretch when you bring it to Mzantsi. I would advise the new government coming in 2024 to eradicate BEE policies, South Africa is for all South African citizens regardless of race. Besides the same BEE does not benefit majority of Black people, it benefit the ANC and foreigners. So South Africans regardless of race needs to be prioritised. Also to sort out crime, poor borders, corruption and looting. This will help majority of South Africans abroad to return back to contribute to our beautiful country. I left SA 6 years ago and have been back for visits 3 times for 2-3 weeks at a time and after experiencing what it is like to like in a country where you can walk around at any time of day, have power at the flick of a switch and other basic 21st century amenities, 2-3 weeks in SA is enough. If you want internet install, 2 hours after applying, the guy is there on sight unlike my SA experience 2 weeks to never arriving. I can braai, I can import my brandy, I make my own biltong, I can leave to the store with my back door open and my taxes are clearly seen being put to work but the only thing I cant get is Ghost pops. I would love to bring my kids up in SA and send them to my schools but not under the ANC. I cant damn them to a life of consequences that they didnt ask for or contribute to.

My wife and I have been living in The Netherlands for 5 years, we bought a house, expecting our firstborn baby in 2 months, and we are really happy. it's not an easy decision to take to leave your country, it's also not cheap, and most definitely not easy leaving your family and friends behind. You can't expect to move to a new country and try and live the same way you have lived before, you have to adapt, others you will get depressed/unhappy. Every country has its ups and downs, you just have to prioritize what's most important to you. As much as I love my family and friends and all the nice things SA has to offer, I don't see us moving back anytime soon. I won't talk bad about SA, in fact, I try to say only positive things when people ask me about SA. I just want people to understand that we (expats) didn't just pack our bags and left...it wasn't easy, I wish I could pop in at my mom's house every day to say hi and give her a hug, but I can't. I'm soon to be a father and I have to make decisions I think are the best for me, my wife, and our kid's future.

We left SA just over 5 years ago, and we didn't move to USA, NEW ZEALAND or AUSTRALIA like majority of South Africans, we moved to India. And yes of course we miss SA we miss our family, the culture, but we don't agree with money goes a longer way. We visited mid june-july, and for us it was expensive. Everything we purchased was multiplied by 5 plus exchange rates. Since we moved abroad, my husband is the sole provider for us, I don't work, and I don't need to as the cost of living is not that high compared to the other countries. We've never been happier, we're able to do things, like travel - a lot! - which we were never able to do in SA even though both of us worked. South Africa will forever be our home, but we found a second home in India.

Whenever I came back from South Africa to Europe,I came to the conclusion that we have „sociological issues“ here,to say the least. South Africa and its people have a special spirit. It is everything.the mystical climate,the plants,the animals. Everything in Africa has to fight a little harder to survive. But everything seemed more according to plan.and it’s People much more human. I will always shed a tear over the fact that life is so brutal in South Africa,due to its brutal past. Nobody says these others countries are perfect, but in 30 years abroad I have had one bike stolen, one burglary (they were caught) and I have not had to shoot anybody. We moved to Australia . We came back . We are now moving back to Australia . Yes there is no place like home but unfortunately there is no future for our kids here with BEE and quotas for certain study fields . Add the loadshedding and municipal non delivery and the home sickness we experienced in Australia is a small price to pay . Losing your license having to go to home affairs , potholes it is absolutely shocking here . Can’t see that it will ever get better it will only get worse .

Went to interview after interview and they told him sorry we have to employ a black person . Every single company has a BEE score . If your BEE score is not up to par you don’t get the big contracts at the mine . The job does not go to the person who is the best qualified but to the person who’s skin colour is the right colour .

Everybody's experiences are different and here's mine. I lived in SA for 27 years. My wife and kids are South African, I came back to England in 1999 with my family and it was by far the best decision we ever made. A big mistake I see people making is comparisons, I believe you need to understand that when you change countries life WILL change with it, sometimes for the better and sometimes not. I've been back to what was my hometown, Pietermaritzburg, a few times since leaving and I can assure you, I have zero desire to go back, but that's just me. I once asked my friend over here in England how many people he knew who had been murdered or were victims of violent crime, he said zero.......I knew 17........Oops, I just made a comparison, but you get my point....👍

@@seanwelch1503 In Johannesburg North (Midrand/Fourways area). Then again, ask someone in Hillbrow, Johannesburg; Cape Flat, Cape Town etc. You’ll get a very different answer. Same goes for the UK I have heard. People in Northern England may share a different experience to that of your friend. Of course SA is more dangerous than most places in the world (on paper/statistically). But the rest of the world won’t give you the full picture, just have to observe the nuance.

These were not petty crimes, if I counted petty crime as well the list would be endless. There is no quality of life i.e . no electricity, no water, no safety, no security, no meaningful public transport, hospitals and education and the economy is shrinking despite the price of commodities going up because the tax base is getting smaller but the taxes are increasing or will dry up because of corruption people will eventually stop paying, the reality is different beyond the borders of South Africa.

This is not a phenomenon all migrants go through this process, there is nothing that is common to you. Two years really isn’t long enough to actually assimilate. My family left the RSA in 1986 for Australia. We still love South Africa, pray for it, and have many family members over there. The first 10 years especially were rough. We all were very homesick but, truth be told, knew South Africa would never be home again. I'd love to see it get a government interested in securing its prosperity and safety but this looks unlikely. Marxist, corrupt, and incompetent leaders now rule in the country and it's looking worse by the day.

What we missed most about SA is the social life, I live in Canada but my love for SA is unmatched. But I feel safe here & the assurance that I can walk into a government office and be given a fair service, oh I can report a crime here & it will be attended to. I don’t have to worry if my kids will come back home safely. If there was no crime & corruption in SA, I would have not left.

I am a Canadian and find the cost of living in Canada to be getting quite high. The average house price is 740,000 dollars Cad and rent in my town is anywhere from 1200- 2000.00 per month. In large cities, it's more. Inflation and stagnant job wages are making it difficult. Many young adults are staying with their parents due to high rent or low wages. If you are coming here you better have a job that pays well.
