There are more than 10 times as many private security officers in South Africa as there are police, private security is often better trained, better paid, better motivated, more trusted and occasionally better armed than police, usually have high membership from the local community, better and more sophisticated PR machines, lower corruption, more modern and expensive tech and better community support. Of course they are more professional; it's far harder to get a job with a private security firm than the police given unemployment rates and the nature of government service culture and far easier to set arbitrary high standards for conduct of private contractors and hold them accountable. Any private guard worth hiring probably has a dozen certifications from different independent certification authorities and possibly a university degree if they have a higher rank, police probably have a high school diploma and a police college certificate.

@Elijah Newton the violence is about economics. any country with so many people unemployed is a ticking bomb people don't wait in their homes until they starve. the fact that the average white in sudafrica is richer than the average black is generational wealth mostly but not the main point. a poor person will feel resentment of a wealthier one no matter the race or place but when you have you necessities covered that resentment is just mild but if you cant get medicine or food it explodes. i only make 280 USD a month in Argentina but I am not going to go looting even if I am mad about how our currency lost 90% of its value in 6 years... now if I were to lose my job and couldn't find one in half a year and there was not gov help i would need to resort to things like this to survive i wouldn't like it but that is how things are. ofc that cant happen here getting a job is rather easy(for MOST people) even with bad salaries so no reason for people to go to that extreme.(to don't get a job here you have to have some serious problem like alchoism or drugs or violent demeanor)

There were no water problems, no load shedding and black people who worked for the "oppressive white man" were fed, clothed and sheltered. As a South African, I remember this time clearly. It was a shocking time for us all, not too long ago. My family member's friend lived in a house next to (on - as we say) the main road where the looting occurred at an 'upper class' suburban mall in KZN. She was extremely traumatized and fearful while sitting in her house at home while she could see the chaos and fire from her window. She prayed that her family would be left alone, she even hid her newborn baby in the ceiling at one point when groups of protesters passed her house, chanting violently with trollies of stolen goods. A few days later they traveled (escaped) to the western cape. They stayed at a quiet beach resort in a quiet town in wc, but couldn't enjoy it due to the trauma and nightmares. Sometimes, like every second year, things become very dark in South Africa. The world NEEDS to know what happens here. It becomes like a violent video game, and nobody is completely safe. I remember when this was happening, I was shocked that it wasn't on goodmorning America , all over BBC, and fellow South African Trevor Noah who then hosted the daily show, didn't even mention it once! That was truly shocking to me, instead, he made unrelated jokes about South Africa on his show at the VERY SAME TIME this was happening in SA. South Africa is beautiful! WC, Cape Town is beautiful. The garden route is beautiful... I just feel that foreigners should not come here and bring their money and boost our tourism, until the government does more to ensure our safety and the safety of visitors in our county. Many tourists get robbed, unfortunately a few murdered. I remember when their was an extreme violence against women spree in SA just 3/4 years ago, the government made many promises as we mourned the lives of slain woman and teenagers, but still they have not fulfilled their promises. As someone who has been a victim of SA's alarming statistics of violence against woman, I know first hand, they are not just statistics. A good school, a good neighbourhood and being an upstanding person - doesn't always protect you from criminals and predictors who are protected by an unjust and largely corrupt government and systemically sick communities. Thanks to Jesus, we are strong. Us woman of South Africa are strong, because we also have to be. Innocent, then shocked and traumatized, then strong. With many tears in between, but also looking back the road to stronger happened fast - just. Like. That. Sink or swim here in South Africa. I think our country must impose the death penalty on major and removal of a limb for petty crimes. It saddens my heart to say that, but my heart is more sad for the hundreds of woman assaulted daily and people (many innocent children) murdered every week in South Africa. There will only be one or two examples, then people will stop. I don't agree with MANY of the UAE policies but one thing is for sure - the citizens are safe in their houses, at the mall, at the parks. It just takes one or two examples and then people stop, first they stop due to fear of punishment and overtime people enjoy the comfort of a safer community, even the former criminals enjoy knowing their wives and little children will grow up safe - protected from crime retaliation. The government made an example of people who said racial slurs by imprisoning a few, now that has stopped to a large extent. Same should be the case with violence. I pray for this nation. God bless you all. Thanks Vice for the coverage.

@Baby Barbie Your explanation seems to be very misplaced in this context, and missing alot of consideration for South Africa's social and political climate that has inevitably led to this civil unrest taking place. Yes poverty is a factor in what took place, and the pandemic also has contributed to poverty as much as it has in many places around the world, but they're not the sole causes of this as it would seem you're implying. If that was the case then the entire country's poverty stricken would have been engaged in the civil unrest but it was instead mainly concentrated in two provinces in South Africa. No, the looting is not "happenining at perfect timing to the pandemic". The unrest was caused due to it being instigated by a faction in South African society who believe the former president shouldn't be imprisoned due to him willingly being in contempt of court...which is another explanation I won't go into here. And I say "unrest" and not "looting" because the situation was alot more than that. Politicians and political famillies in support of the former president instigated the unrest, and that just triggerred off a chain of madness to follow after. No, food was not the only items mainly being looted, actually you should see the tally of the liquor stores broken into as well as the electronics, hardware, fashion oultets etc. It was alot more than just food, and it wasn't only the poor. People from outside the province drove down in cars and expensive vehicles to join in on the looting. No, they didn't loot in only white areas, the first targets were shopping centres and businesses in townships before it spread to business districts and areas occupied by minorities, all race groups were affected here even if the factions were trying to target minorities in some areas. This was much more than simply starvation as you put it, if it was merely about food then the national roadways wouldn't be blocked, trucks wouldn't be burnt to the ground transporting food to areas, water facilities wouldn't have been targeted, warehouses stocking food wouldn't have been burnt to the ground, along with schools, blood banks and unrelated businesses. South Africa has unfortunately developed a culture of violent protesting in recent years due to years of government neglect and non-service delivery affecting poor communites. It's spread to business forums and regulatory bodies as well, which is why its not so hard to believe that large amounts people would not have an issue with committing these acts at such a large scale, especially since the same protesting tactics were used in the beginning of the civil unrest and urged on by political figures. I can assume your heart is in the right place agreeing with me that this is a bad situation, but I'm sorry... your understanding is just too simple regarding the causes leading to whats taken place over here, and thats coming from a guy on the ground level in one of the most affected districts throughout this time. Theres alot more psychology to it than biological thinking.

In the video we see more black SAs than white looting, unless VICE is just pushing a narrative it seems odd that within such a small time frame somehow it has shifted back & the black SAs feel they are being oppressed. I would think it would be everyone or white SAs based on the reports in just the last 3-5 yrs I believe. Corruption affects everyone typically not just one race as many feel, but like in America it seems black ppl are taken advantage of more & I often believe it’s more about rich & poor, the poor are taken advantage of & due to the black Americans having a higher demographic in the impoverished community it falls on them but there still many many other races that fall victim as well
