I just finished the book and watched the movie. Yes! Tommy added so much heart to the character. Hilary Swank of course did a phenomenal job, although I find it hard to believe she couldn’t find a husband! lol I was expecting a Brianne of Tarth type of woman.

This movie has moved me like no other, in many, many years. I was surprised to see Luc Besson involved (who also did "The Big Blue," one of my top two films of all times) but of course... you can't miss the Besson touch! Between Tommy Lee Jones and Hilary Swank, you couldn't ask for better story tellers or actors. The film and story has stayed with me for so long I have had to watch it again and am looking up all I can now about the old West. I am currently reading "They Saw the Elephant," about pioneer women who went out West to California during the gold rush and this film fits in perfectly with that. Jones & Swank are superb! As are the entire rest of the cast. It's just incredible. Add in Luc Besson, and you couldn't ask for more. Hoping to see more stories brought to life like this one. Love the interview here, too. Thanks for posting!

Absolutely broke my heart seeing those poor women suffering then mary doing what she did she must have felt so helpless and 2 fools turned her down, such a good movie but so so sad.

Good job with the interview. The part about the photos was quite interesting. Hillary is riveting.

A very moving film, as others have said. I loved all of it, especially the performances and the production design. Always been a big fan of Tommy Lee Jones, now a big fan of Hilary Swank. "Plain as an old tin pail"? She seems stunningly beautiful to me.

My family lived in west nebraska from immediately after the civil war. My grandfather was born in a sod house built by his father. Joy was rare, life was horrendous by today's standards I grew up hearing the stories about the blizzards, locusts, prairie fires, the sudden or lingering deaths of children, and yes, the people who went insane. One story in particular haunted me. A young couple built a soddy into a hill. One late fall they stoked the stove and went to bed. During the night rattle snakes began working their way in, attracted by the warmth. Some time later visitors found them, the man and baby dead, the woman on the bed surrounded by snakes alive but stark raveing mad.

I call this a high performance art house movie! It's incredible that all the horrible things are in it yet it is a fantastic piece (Western) that is truly heartbreaking. It seems to give a good view of how life was in these times. Great cinematography, light, filters, acting and lines. Great actors and very believable.

One of the best films I have ever seen. I don't know why it didn't win any Academy awards (unless I'm wrong about that).

Yeah at least three Oscar winners in the cast and it's just beautiful. Tommy Lee says he thinks women endure many of the same hardships now too he seemed really sensitive about the story and how it was conveyed. Great costumes cinematography etc. too. A proper film.

I've just seen this movie and mary B cuttie was such a brilliant character but I was absolutely devastated when she felt so lost, I'd never turn down an offer from such a beautiful woman, 2 foolish men in that movie, brilliant but very sad story. 😔
