I had the pleasure of a 1999 DC2 here in Melbourne (Australia).... in which I clocked up 165,000 kms (from new) & enjoyed 13 track days during my 5.5 years of ownership. I was utterly addicted to the VTEC scream of the B18C engine, the wonderfully slick gearbox, dynamic handling & complete marvel of Honda engineering. Ok so I’ve had hundreds of cars, mostly BMW’s and Alfa’s, but a number of Hondas including 5 x Accord Type R’s, two Prelude 2.2’s, and two DC2 Type R’s. In all the cars I’ve owned, the best chassis by far was the DC2. Without doubt. It’s the most rewarding car I’ve ever, ever driven. As a standard car on 15” wheels, they’re literally unbelievable, just like a race car. So utterly raw. The worst thing I did to my second Milano Red one was modify it. After Tein Type flex coilovers, whiteline roll bars, bracing everywhere and 16” team dynamics, it was literally ruined, fidgety and prone to understeer. The best thing I did was a buddy club shirt shift, Tegiwa manifold and decat, and Spoon N1. Crazy, crazy VTEC. Painted the car twice, then it got exported to Holland. Ended up spending £26000 on it over 4 years, including two resprays and two sets of Honda decals. I stuck a carbon bonnet on in the end as they’re so heavy and rust badly on the leading edge. It started rotting badly under the inner rear arches, so much so that it needed significant welding in Holland. Shame. Rot boxes they are. Fabulous, fabulous car, as is the Accord Type R.

@@chrissyboy7047 Because they have continuously variable valve timing which is better for power and efficiency across the rev range and varying with load demand. I would prefer V-TEC but unfortunately it can't really be justified now from an engineering point of view. Jay, I love the videos but you need to find some way of recording the intake noise a bit better, I don't think I'm alone in saying I don't really care what the exhaust of this car sounds like and that extends (at least for me) to most of the other cars. Been a long-time viewer and I love the format of everything and how it has evolved, but you absolutely need to find a way to get better intake sound noise even if that means better cabin mics or placing a mic by the air filter or something. I own EP3 for 15 years now, and I bought DC2 later 8th years ago. I don't think I would buy EP3 as a daily, if I owned dc2 first. If I had to own just 1 car, it would be EP3, but If I had to replace one of them, I can see better daily cars as EP3 that I can afford. So looks like DC2 on top for me. @@pirotehs interesting. I've never driven either. I've got a BRZ and i bet a DC2 would be a much better raw drivers car. My old clio Williams was so much more fun than my BRZ..
I wouldn't say the "final word", later came the dc5 and then the fd2, both FWD, 8400rpm redline, higher compression, a refined VTEC and larger displacement at the expense of some weight increase (60kg with the DC5) and nicer interiors. You can pretty much replace the Integra with any Type R from the late 90's to 2005 and the review would be pretty much identical. All we're so nice to drive. The FN was only let down with its rear suspension and being a bit fat. Unfortunately they carried on that trend with the FK, which in my opinion is the best looking Civic. 100% especially as everyone is asking for over 10k for one of these now, sure a clean one fine but people with cars way over 100k miles that have been kept outside are asking for 10k which is a hell of a lot for a car that has or will rust badly. Gotta buy JDM ... nearly had my fingers burnt with a UKDM in the past.
@MrGrentch4 жыл бұрын
@@scwarzewaffe85 JDM can be just as bad unless fresh off the boat. Though the Euro spec ones had rear wheelwell covers which actually made the rust more likely. One major issue is that a joint where the inner wheelarch joins the sills is open when it should have been sealed. Water gets in and the next thing you know are small bubbles on outside, large rot on the inside and big bills. This fault seems to be only on the R's as I noticed JDM Integras in the rest of the range have closed seams there. I've always been paranoid about the tinworm and growing up having relatives who are into classics increased this. When I got my Type R I flooded the sills and everywhere else I could with waxoyl and latterly bilt hamber wax and examine and top it up once a year. At this stage I've probably added the same weight in wax that Honda took out in weight saving. 😄 Though 15 years on, daily driver, parked outside in all weathers and zero rust.

@@MrGrentch so simple yet so effective. surprised why manufacturers didn't just waxoyl the whole chassis during production would have added pennies to the cost of each car.

@@kenzohkw At the time Honda sent their dealers instructions on how to do just that with all their models(I found a copy on ebay), but it seems customers didn't go for it for some reason? On the Tegs anyway, by the time you see a coin sized area of bubbles on a rear wheelarch, it's usually a horror story below.

In my opinion the longer wheelbase compared to the Civic is not a bad thing..... less likely to do the 3 wheel cornering as so often seen with the shorter FF types. 197bhp is plenty enough....... and I can have fun with 140 *allegedly* in my old heap (awaiting parts 🤮). Great review. Thanks James 👍

The Integra has a shorter wheelbase then the Civic. The overall body length is longer on the Integra vs. the Civic.

Concentration implies resistance, whereas in attention there is no form of resistance. Resistance arises when there is fear. When you give attention, there is no entity who attends. When the brain is aware of how inattentive it is, then that very awareness of inattention becomes attention.

Grear review as ever, you can't beat the sound of a VTEC going bwaaah in the morning😂 J I love the way your preconceptions are being blown away by driving old JDM cars which on my big fan off. Integras are legendary front wheel drive cars on a par with it which I own in the Japanese car of the year was the Mitsubishi FTO another great more powerful front wheel drive car proved again that you only need 200 roughly horsepower and a good handling car have a naturally aspirated multi valve times engine to have fun, the power of a JDM guys got out of their Moses was very impressive showing you don't need a 3-litre or massive turbo to have have fun on British b roads.👍

As a fellow dc2R owner & driver I thought I'd share this with peeple to see if its just mine or can other owners do this with their dc2R? Mine is stock - no mods MY'01. One day i was on KZbin watching a dc2 review from I think it was - Chicago Cars Direct when the presenter mentioned that manual Hondas have a "friction pt" as well as a "take-off pt" in the clutch travel. So one day as i pulled away from a green light i did the following, 1) pushed clutch all the way down, 2) pulled 1st into 2nd gear, at about 4000rpm (no need to hit vtec or redline), 3) let the clutch out about 1/4 of the way, 4) tapped the throttle all the way down (very quickly) before releasing, 5) then let the clutch up to about 1/2 way, 6) pushed the throttle pedal all the way down this time and kept it down. I got an unbelievable rush of power that pushed me so hard into my recaro seats, it felt like they were gonna break. It was just an AMAZING rush of power i would say 10X more powerful than what u get from vtec. In fact compared to vtec, it makes vtec seem like nothing at all! I dont know if the engineers intended it to do this but i do know it works & its UNBELIEVABLE!!! Sadly, I've only managed to do it a handful of times it's hard to do just right) Try this with your dc2, & then tell me if u experience the same? If so, it's time to let the secret out guys!

That front head actually looks better than the 4 circled lights. Wonder y they chose the circle lights over those in the u.s. market

Being somewhat burned by your lukewarm view on my current car (M2C) I did worry how you would find one of my previously owned cars! Glad to see & hear you enjoyed. It remains the favourite car I’ve owned. I recall the way it settles into a bend but that is very dependent on tyres. The original fit bridgestones were better at masking this. I wouldn’t necessarily go back to one (mines was a 3 year old 6k miles when I bought it) but I’m glad I owned one!

Fair play mate! You see folks it's not about rwd is better than fwd or vice versa..it's how the car makes you feel. I'm on my 2nd GT86 and love rwd but it will never be as much fun as my clio Williams..

Long time coming, this review. I've been out for a passenger ride in one of these. Sounds fantastic, didn't feel like much power. At the time I had my Clio Williams and would've loved to compare them but said owner wasn't up for a swap to compare. So James, as you've had the chance to drive both. Which is best??

That's how AMAZING thoses integras are(first name says it all basically stating 'above n beyond')models are truly exceptional in handling and their closest machine I've experienced to a full track non road car 200hp from a 1.8 non turbo unit all motor smh most companies today can't make that without a turbo.. Says alot about the engineering
@damienhowell37274 жыл бұрын
@Simp Nation golf 1.8 turbos mk4 released sametime as integras made 150hp renault clio sports 2.0ltrs made 172 hp the later version 182 make exactly that compare to honda that's 20hp down dispite having a larger engine nothing wrong about truth if u don't believe look it up. All facts but it's upto u what u want to believe
@damienhowell37274 жыл бұрын
@Simp Nation I recognise some of thoses companies the most appealing u mention being that bmw e46 m3 unit number code remember not all reached hondas level dispite being kinda simular that vtec icing on the cake honda smashed it best under 2ltr na engine avaliable you are correct I do understand as there is a few good units around but please take into consideration how many car companies around the globe there are let alone separate engine manufacturers that car makers do business with worldwide but yeh personally from my personal experience and I have alot honestly no shit, its honda all the way again it's just my personal experience so don't take a axe to my head ok lol (thump up)

Owned a UK DC2 a good few years ago, most fun car I've ever had. Mine had an aftermarket exhaust so it was unbearable on motorways as they rev so high (4k+RPM at 70)

ONLY £10k for a Type R??? Where? I’ll buy one right now! They are going for £18-24k + here in the US!

Chassis wise it's quite well matched by the FTO GPX top of the range model, handles so so well but there's a little more excitement in the integra! Me and my step dad were lucky to have both between 2005/6.

That's the best into music on motor any channel 🎼🎧👍🏿. The VTEC howl reminded me of my Accord Type R I owned. The buzz you get from 6k rpm no GTi, Ford Rs/St or Renault Megane RS can equal. Way to go Honda 😎😁

Never got to drive a DC2, but I drive a DC5 as my daily and you couldn't pay me enough money to get rid of it. I know these 2 cars are quite different, but I would love to see a follow-up review on a DC5 regardless.

Still got the DC5? If so, how's it treating you? considering buying one
@YouOnlyIiveTwice2 жыл бұрын
@@the-yaiba 190K miles and she's still going strong. Granted, I know it was well taken care of by the 2 previous owners, but whether you want it for a project car or daily driver, it's hard to beat a more fun car for the price even with the inflated car market right now. If you live in the US I can recommend a FB page that usually has owners selling their DC5s all the time.
@the-yaiba2 жыл бұрын
@@YouOnlyIiveTwice From the UK but I appreciate it, so you think it's dailyable? my hesitations are just the lack of cruise control or how loud/comfortable it would be at 70mph for a long journey
@YouOnlyIiveTwice2 жыл бұрын
@@the-yaiba I've daily'd mine the past 2 years, but I commute mostly in the city and don't get on the highway enough to where I would care for a cruise control. With that being said, I have traveled long distances on the hwy for an occasional event and I can see how uncomfortable it would quickly get if my everyday commute was more than an hour on the highway. Part of that is also because there is no center armrest and having your arm unsupported, awkwardly resting in your lap (unless you like holding the wheel with your left hand when it's not shifting) can get old. When I bought my DC5 there was an aftermarket exhaust already in it and it's a bit drone-y at highways speeds. Have only heard the stock exhaust sound from these cars when coming/leaving meets, but based on that limited experience I doubt they're loud at all at cruising speeds. It's really when you get above 5.7K RPM do you notice a substantial difference in noise/performance with these K20 engines.

Helical LSDs, good because they're smooth and progressive and have no clutches to wear out, bad because if one wheel loses ALL traction the LSD can't transfer any torque to the other wheel so it's no better than an open diff.
