Downsizing is always a mental struggle between what you are trying to hang onto; riding style, bike style, etc. and what you’re moving to. I’m 71 and went through much the same experiences with my Himma and its ultimate replacement. You’ll find yourself chuckling to yourself as you make a mental note such as, “I couldn’t do THAT with the Himalayan”, or, “I would never have tried THAT with the Himalayan!” And that’s when you’ll really know you’re making the right choices. And you’ll begin to sever those mental ties that bind… (I also have those moments with my 150 Vespa as I leave my GTS behind more and more) But riding is still a passion and a therapy for me regardless of what I’m sitting on. And that’s the main thing. Enjoyed the video and the shared thoughts. Keep rolling! You have many more miles ahead of you.

Dear Steve: You made the right choice. I live around similar rural mountain terrain in New England and the Trail 125 is a great go-anywhere, rugged, and reliable bike. Dirt roads, pavement, single lane trials, coffee runs, pack a bag and head to the lake or waterfall: the Little Red Mule does it all, and all in one day if I have time. A full day of riding on one tank of gas, a great luggage rack, center stand, excellent build quality: I could go on and on... Personally, i cant wait to get back out there myself! Spring is almost here!

In 2017 I realized my knees were to the point that I needed to get off my Goldwing, but I was not interested in giving up riding, so I bought a Honda Ruckus and since then I have never had so much fun riding! I do not ride dirt, although I could. Recently looked at these 125s at my dealer, but when I found out they do not have the high low gear switch of the original Honda 90 Trail, which I rode while in college some 50+ years ago, I said no, and will continue with my Ruckus….sure it’s not as fast as the 125, but no tag, no registration fee, no tax, etc. so low cost to operate. As of this video, you got 100 miles…I got 8800 miles on my scooter, and as soon as my hand is healed from trigger finger release surgery, I will be back on it! Best of luck to you, and the important thing is to keep riding! I am 75 years old now!

Don't overthink it - Ride and have fun! All my riding buddies are 5-10 years older than me and I'm 62. Including mine we have 4 Ct125 Trails between us. Truly some of the most fun riding I've done has been when we camp somewhere and spend our days exploring on the CTs. I am still capable of riding big fast bikes but the 125 Trail is so much fun and easy on gravel and harder off road. If the terrain gets too tough we just duck walk our way thru. We are always teasing after riding a rough section how we never would have made it on our adventure bikes or our 250cc dual sports but nothing stops the CT125 Trail. Enjoy Enjoy Enjoy...... A couple of things - when the CT125 was on sale in Australia, the price was nearly $8000 ride away. It also lacked an oil filter and had (I think) a carby. Its current road sibling the CB125F has fuel injection and the filter, and is under $4000 ride away. The Aussie KZbinr Ride with Warro has done heaps of clips on both bikes, concluding that the CB125F is as good on the dirt and much better value. I guess it depends on what is available in your market, and whether Honda is gouging you on price in your country. Certainly the CB125T looks much easier to mount / dismount, so that's a real plus for people with mobility issues.
@ScooterintheSticks8 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and observations on some of the choices in the 125cc range of Honda products. I always am interested in them. The CB125F isn't available in the United States. The comparable model here may be the XR150L. It's still got a carb, bigger wheels, etc. And less expensive that the Honda Trail 125. But it just doesn't pass the looks test for me. Looks like any other motorcycle. My requirements for a machine are always looks first, then how it feels to ride. Mechanical and technical specs are a far distant concern. I can get used to almost anything as long as the appearance of the machine resonates and it feels "right" to ride. The CT125 gets salty to buy with an out the door price here of over $5K US. A used one is a better value if you can find one. Some of the depreciation has already taken place and the freight and shipping costs aren't there. I've seen them advertised under $3K. The 2023 model has an oil filter and is fuel injected. And it's fun to ride!
@andrewgreen60608 ай бұрын
@@ScooterintheSticks That's great that they updated the CT125 to CB125F specs by the sound of it. The updated model isn't on sale in Oz just yet, but may come back. I agree the look of a bike is important. If you don't look longingly at it in the garage, something is wrong! And regardless of mobility, the step thru design will be attractive (like the Vespa) and likely mean you would ride it more often. In fact, given your dirt trails are so close to home, I'm betting the Himalayan will gather cobwebs and eventually be sold... especially when you jump on it and realise just how heavy it is compared to the Honda.
@ScooterintheSticks8 ай бұрын
@@andrewgreen6060 I've been riding the Himalayan more lately and I still enjoy it. Time will tell though whether it gathers cobwebs... The Trail 125 isn't really step through. At least not for me. @ScooterintheSticks7 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the CT125. I've owned a variety of VWs over the years with perhaps my GOLF coming closest to a GTI. I always wanted one of those cars. I'm sitting here now imaging the GTI and the Trail 125. I don't live far from the original Piper Aircraft factory where a lot of Super Cubs were manufactured. I think they may still have an annual fly-in of cubs. I'll need to look into that. I have a friend who's a pilot. He'll know.

Good morning Steve. I thoroughly enjoyed your video and narration. The early CTtrail90 holds very fond memories for me. I was "riding" one in Western PA even before I could ride a bicycle without training wheels in the early 70's. That is to say, I was sitting between my brother's legs at the edge of the seat and steering and operating the throttle with my feet on the top plate. I've also had the opportunity to ride a CT90 on occasion over the years. I love that Honda produced the CT125 as well as their lineup of other small displacement bikes. It is also disappointing that the new model is lacking dual range. This is the one feature that made the trail90 stand apart from other bikes. It's really something that needs to be experienced first hand. The bike can literally slowly and methodically climb and navigate extreme terrain that one normally wouldn't even consider attempting on anything but a trials bike. That being said, I'm sure first gear in the CT125 is fine for most normal terrain and steep hills. I currently ride a 22 KLR650 and it suits me for my current riding habits and conditions, but I certainly appreciate what a bike like the CT125 brings to the table and definitely plan on getting one from the used market in a few years. Eric
@ScooterintheSticks8 ай бұрын
I've heard a lot about the functioning of the dual range CT90. While it isn't a feature I would need now for the type of riding I do I'm sure there are riders who could use it. So far 1st gear is more than adequate. I always enjoyed riding KLRs and for a time considered buying one. But the opportunity never presented itself and when I purchased my Himalayan the KLR just seemed too big and tall for me. I was out on the Honda this morning. It sure is fun. No worries about anything with that motorcycle!

As someone originally from New Hampshire and living in South Florida "off road" is the only reasonably safe place to ride around here. Everyone has a different definition, of course, but for me it's mostly gravel, fire roads, and light single track. No jumps. Nothing serious. Nothing too remote. Ground clearance and suspension travel don't really matter much. The bike just has to be rugged and reliable. With a gps device to call for help I still think off-road is safe. Cars and distracted drivers are something that concerns me more these days.
@ScooterintheSticks3 ай бұрын
I'm fortunate to have seemingly endless gravel and dirt roads here in the mountains of central Pennsylvania. The Honda Trail 125 is a neat little bike and each time I ride it I learn it has more and more capabilities. I'm certain there are distracted drivers here but so far not something I see very often. Of course, it only takes one...

I’ve got a 2023 model, as well. I’m in my early 50s and it’s my first motorcycle. With nearly 600 miles on it, I’m still having a lot of fun. I sometimes wish for another 10mph in the top end, but it’s nearly perfect for my riding style and bouncing from place to place with a camera.
@ScooterintheSticks8 ай бұрын
I certainly can understand the desire for another 10mph of top speed. But for me, part of the charm and challenge of the Trail 125 is puzzling out how to operate with the speed limitation. It's a non-issue off-road for me but it definitely has me considering how I address higher speed roads. And that brings a new element of satisfaction for me. Good luck with your new motorcycle and be safe bouncing around in the world!

Greetings Steve! Dig that 125. Certainly a option as we get older and not as quick in our reflexes. Having a step through can be a definite game changer for some, as we age. I tryed talking my wife into something like this, or even that " Bear " with 2 wheels in front. As much as those Honda's may seem overpriced, I believe with TLC one of those could last 100 years. We are only stewards of these fine bikes meaning we pray the next individual has the same passion in maintenance as well as riding and passes it down to another enthusiasts. I HAD...a honda z-50 and hope someone still enjoys it as much as I did. I watched " Uncle VooDoo" deliver pizza and drinks on his honda cub to a group on a trail on the blue ridge mountain, so we know that bike is the real deal. Great choice.

Congrats on the new bike! I was right there with you ... until that "nice day - about 40º"... and then parts of me tried to crawl back inside. That's probably TMI, huh? Sorry, I digressed. All good reasons for smaller and lighter, as long as it keeps you riding AND enjoying it! Very capable bikes - QuasiMotard rode his across the country, did the Scooter Cannonball, then rode it home. I don't see this as downsizing - merely adding another bike for the purpose. Hope you enjoy it for many, many years, Steve!
@ScooterintheSticks8 ай бұрын
I must confess a growing dissatisfaction riding in the cold. Where 40F once felt fine it is now close to my lower limit. Another gift of aging... Smaller and lighter is definitely feeling great. Especially as my riding windows narrow due to unrelated circumstances in life. A small machine can provide big adventure when you can't go very far. I watch the Cannonball with great interest. Just can't imagine ever doing it. Much like I feel when I watch Itchy Boots traveling the world. I turn into an armchair rider. The Trail 125 is a completely different riding experience. I bought it to downsize but it seems I got something different as a bonus. It sure is fun.

Your Honda has 17 inch rims, but I'm wondering if for example, you would ride a Monkey on the trail shown in this video. Any thoughts are appreciated. Thanks.

I have never ridden a Honda monkey. But I’ve seen a lot of videos of people riding them off road and very rough terrain. For the kind of places I ride I don’t think there would be a lot of difference between the trail 125 and the Honda monkey. The bigger spoke wheels may be a theoretical advantage, but for all practical purposes, I don’t think it would matter much. I looked at a Honda monkey when I bought my trail bike. It was beautiful. Way too pretty to take off road in my opinion! That would be my only hesitation. Since you already have a monkey, I would just keep riding.

I've ridden my Vespa GTS in pretty rough off-road settings and it handled it but isn't really built for the battering it gets. The small tires can be a challenge and the low ground clearance can be a problem. And the suspension isn't made for the rough stuff. And perhaps the really scary thing is taking a very expensive scooter designed for the pavement off-road. You're right, it would be nice to see someone built one really intended as a rally scooter. But I suspect the pool of potential buyers is just too small to make it a realistic offering.

@@jamieletourneau1176 I've put more miles on the GTS than anything else in the garage but that is mostly a result of it being the only machine I owned for a long time. Now I pretty much spread my time among all of them. I'm not sure there is a most used bike. I can say though, if I could only have one machine in the garage, it would probably be the Vespa GTS. It is anxiety provoking to be in aggressive traffic on a motorcycle that cannot keep pace. I generally make way for those behind me and seek a different route. The Vespa GTS will be a lot quicker than the TW200 but I can't say whether that will solve your discomfort in traffic. It is hard to imagine a more stable motorcycle on dirt roads than the TW200. The nature of the dirt can have an effect on how the bike handles and could in some situations make it feel unstable. I've run into that on my Himalayan. Airing down the tire pressure may help gain some stability but again it depends on the nature of the dirt. If you know any experienced off-road riders you may want them to take your TW200 for a spin to see if they think something is wrong. Could be tire issues, suspension issues, alignment issues that are causing the bike to feel unstable. And last, that part none of us likes to consider including me, are my skills just not up to the task. I've ridden with guys off road going twice as fast as me. They just were more experienced and could handle the bike better. Not that I wanted to go faster but it would be nice to feel more comfortable! Practice, practice, practice....

If you bought it for $4k + dealer fees then the quick answer is no, you didn't make a good purchase. The entire Honda lineup is insanely over priced ESPECIALLY underlined the Trail 125.

The price was of no concern with the Honda. I paid the sticker plus all the fees and costs. I was more focused on whether it could deliver the riding experience I was after along with some physical concerns. It met those expectations. In regard to the price of bikes -- I tend to see them as an expense that I'm willing to pay. And at this point in my life I'm fortunate that I don't have to sweat over the cost of something like the Trail 125. I bought a gallon of milk today. $6.99. Everything is insanely overpriced. I'm getting used to it.

Enjoy it! I've got a 2022 in red of course, 4,000 miles so far and a great option for gravel road travel, loading on the camper etc. Nicely compliments my 2012 GTS. 🛵

It is a perfect machine for much of the riding I do here in the mountains. I'm glad I have it.
