Royal Iris was a Mersey Ferry out of Liverpool. I sailed on her twice - once in about 1958 on a primary school trip along the length of the Manchester Ship Canal from Pomona Docks, Manchester, to Liverpool. And then again about 10 years later in an evening outing from work for a disco cruise in the Mersey estuary when I was about 19. She famously had a dance floor (hence her suitability as a disco cruise ship and host to the famous Liverpool bands in the '60s). We spent the evening cruising within the confines of the estuary so she'd cruise along in a straight line for about 20 minutes, then do a 180 degree turn and cruise back in a straight line for 20 minutes, then another 180 degree turn, repeating this all evening. My abiding memory was, back then, it was customary for groups of girls to dance together in a circle around their hand bags, which would be on the dance floor in the centre of the circle, while us blokes propped up the bar and 'observed the talent'. Every time the Royal Iris commenced one of these 180 degree turns she'd heel over and all the handbags would slide across the floor out of the circle of dancing girls, who broke off to chase after them, to the side of the dance floor where they retrieved them before going back into their circle once more dancing around the hand bags. It was a long time ago so it's all a bit hazy, but I think we blokes eventually got enough Dutch courage care of the beer to ask the girls for a dance, but I really can't be sure! It's very sad to see her laid up and sitting sunk onto the river mud like that, water up to her decks, that dance floor well and truly flooded. Vince

This is a great channel Freddie (& Monica)!. There are many other bike channels that go into super detail of tech specs and performance, but this channel does more to show what it feels like to actually live with these bikes as Freddie rides like the 90% of us do. Such a relaxed vibe - so easy to watch. Keep it up!

Hi Freddie, you (and a few other KZbinrs) are responsible for getting my wife and I into biking in our 50’s. We’ve been mountain biking and road biking for decades and decided to switch to motorbikes. She’s purchased her 1st bike, a 900 Speed Twin and I am seriously considering the Transalp. I figure the rain mode or user mode can be set up to neuter the throttle response as I build up my confidence and skill set! …Thanks again for the great content! ❤

$1800+ for some crash bars and fog lights. Hmmmm? No luggage? No rack? All that space in the fairing and no storage pockets or speakers? It's got street tires. Is this the replacement for the awesome Africa Twin? No problem with your review, just the bike. I'm thinking Honda dropped the ball if they were going for an "Adventure" bike.

I always loved the original Transalp so I was stoked to see Honda release a new version. For me, the Africa Twin is just too big and bulky, so it's great to see a more practical, manageable adventure bike from them. I look forward to seeing how you get on with it.

I always loved the transalp. But at the same time a dominator 650 made the same horse power with one cylinder and air cooling. Was lighter and cost less. Was it all worth it just for the smoothness. I think the XL600v was the best one. It just got heavier with each reiteration. 650-700 etc

Hi Freddie, I am not sure you appreciate your Bonneville. I believe you have an SE, they are much better than the T100. The team of Triumph engineers tasked with developing the SE were triumphs own chassis development engineers based in Spain, who fully understood the shortcomings of the T100. They elected to use the proven Triumph Truxton frame that had a steering head rake of 27 degrees instead of the T100 frame that had a steering head rake of 28 degrees. They knew adding a pair of 17-inch mag wheels and tubeless tyres would improve the handling making the bike much more agile and responsive, and as an added benefit lowered the seat height making the bike suitable for shorter riders. When first released in 2009 the SE was fitted with a single offset clock which was quickly replaced with twin clocks. Only two colour options were available, Classic Black or my preferred choice: two-tone Pacific Blue and Polar White. The other noticeable difference from the T100 was the handlebars and front brake reservoir. The T100 has 1-inch bars and the front brake reservoir is part of the front brake lever. The SE has 7/8 inch bars and a plastic remote brake reservoir., which is a shame and could have only been used as a cost-saving exercise. Another nice touch was to use the same upswept peashooter silencers used on the Thruxton. It will be nice to see your bike when you get it back from the Wurks and see what he's done. I am waiting for his next update on the relocation of the voltage regulator.... enjoy the Africa Twin,

I noticed that you use your keys on a single keychain, including the one on your motorcycle. My suggestion is that you avoid this on motorcycles, for two reasons: the vibration of the keys while riding will scratch your entire cockpit. The main one, and here especially thinking about your Bonneville, is that the weight of the keys will reduce the life of the ignition switch. Here in Brazil we generally use a keychain that connects to a necklace. When we get off the bike, the key goes into this necklace, ensuring that it will not be lost.

Shocked at how Woolwich has changed almost beyond recognition- though probably for the best. Safe riding and maybe one day you should arrange a “channel” coffee somewhere. I’d happily come along.

Dual Sport Motorcycles were commonplace and the Trail machines of the seventies and early eighties provided the ideal "second" Bike, great for Winter / wet riding with simple practicality balanced keenly alongside the fun factor of off road capability (in itself, a goldmine of machine control and rider skill). Since the countryside became increasingly stolen away, mostly around the 2001 / 2002 Foot and Mouth outbreak, in favour of developer friendly exclusivity, our practical alternative has become, regrettably, less capable and increasingly complex. we watched Honda start this trend, fitting a fairing and L.C.D. readout to the jewel in it's Dual Sport crown, the XL. Jus' sayin'....

I saw that bike when Exeter Rider had it, our paths crossed on the Eastern side of Dartmoor. If possible could you give an opinion on the dipped beam performance without the auxiliary lights on? I am wondering how the dipped beam performance compares to the last iteration of the V-Strom 650. If the Transalp needs auxiliary lights I may as well fit additional lights to my existing non adventure road bike. The Transalp Damerells at Indian Queens didn't have the crash bars and auxiliary lights fitted and it took me a couple of days to realise I may've preferred that look as in white, red and blue with the gold wheels I may've got an 80s Paris-Dakar vibe.

Have to say this is the modern/retro bike that is most like its original. This looks so much like the 600/650 that apart from the exhaust back box you would at first glance be trying to figure out what it was old or new. Thank god they ignored the most ugly bike ever the transalp 700. Very expensive new bike and I am sure is good. But if any if your viewers have a chance to buy a 600 or 650 from approx 20 years ago with low milage and well maintained I will tell you it is best 1 to 3 grand you will ever shell out. They are so flexible and timeless and will bring you anywhere around the world.

Great video as usual, owned two of the original 600s and used them as commuters, faultless, enjoy 😊

The first bikes I saw that made me think ‘I want one of those when I grow up’ were the Transalps, Teneres and Dr Bigs of the 80s. Seeing them loaded up with kit, the riders in their big enduro boots and peaked helmets in the French Alps from the back of a Renault estate made quite an impression on me. I’m delighted to see this type of bike get this modern resurgence though my heart will always belong to the old XTZ750 Tenere.

I still see those original Transalps at rallys in Argentina. People love them and ride them everywhere. I was excited when the new one came out. A little disappointed when I found out how much electronics it has. Probably just me but I prefer a simple bike that is easy to maintain in a third world country. Working on Honda 250 now. It has a siezed speed sensor and a new one is $150. Owner says he would rather buy tires.

Great looking bike, Honda nailed it. Not too big, not too heavy, simple and comfortable too.

Honda doesn’t seem to want to sell the Transalp in the states. You can get one… But, you’d better like BLACK🤨

Freddie, you are a tall guy and the Transalp still looks big with you on it. At 5 foot 10 I might have to look elsewhere...

I'd also like to add that the old ones have one big advantage to the new one, taht is a high mounted exhaust. But the low exhausts are some modern idea that i do not understand, especialy in adventure/offroad bikes. Great channel by the way. I'm currently going through the videos :)

Love this bike, I prefer the older models purely on price, that one is way too much for me. Might I say it does become someone of your stature, I'm sure Monika will get used to being above you 😂 I can really see you owning one of these. Great video as always

The transalp is a great bike, but I cannot see when compared to the hornet how it cost an extra 2.4k, that’s a lot of money for the differences, or is it just me?
