The print quality is definitely the POD’s fault. There were a couple of designers you mentioned that I know because I am in their circle. They are highly professional and know what they are doing. They have degrees in the design field. Print technology is 101 as soon as you step foot in any design school so I can guarantee you that low quality files were definitely not the issue here. However, it’s worth noting that they’ve built their niches around a style. Like Steven Rhodes’ pulp retro art, that relies heavily on line work and full color solids with halftone shading that makes printing a little more complex relative to a single color design. Most PODs demand RGB files that will never, never, ever in everything that is hell going to translate exactly into CMYK. You’re also not accounting for monitor color calibration that looks extremely different for every individual. Matching colors exactly will never happen with DTG technology because it’s one of the lowest quality technologies in the industry, therefore cheaper. The only way to properly color match is spot coloring and that is only unique to offset printing and very expensive. By its nature, printing will always be dark. CMYK is a subtractive process because you are removing light, opposite to RGB that emits light, therefore it’s additive. And as you know, most e-sellers make their money through multiple channels and accounting a unique print file for every single print provider (that sometimes changes as in Printful!) to compensate for their color process is extremely difficult for any designer. Printful is very big and therefore can afford the better equipment for handling volume + quality. Until there isn’t a fixed standard set by all POD providers and demanded by customer standards, there isn’t going to be any reliability relief in the future.

I think the print quality will vary depending on your country. RB uses third party printer services available in the location closest to the buyer so they don't really have a consistent set of standards. They might be even using more than one printing company in the bigger countries like the US.

As a designer doing print on demand with random printers, I could stress that using 'dithered' designs to replicate tones etc, somtimes the colour printers don't pop and you have more control using fewer shades by using dithering to simulate tones.

Great video... Do you think the color wasn't bright on the tshirt because it was created in RGB and they used bright colors outside of CMYK and when it printed the bright RGB color turned muted because it prints in CMYK?
@WholesaleTed3 жыл бұрын
No. Every single product including the basic white text t-shirt that should have printed fine, all printed with off colors. As I say in the video, while there is a possibility that some files aren't optimised for printing colors, the consistency with this issue shows that there is definitely some form of low quality printing going on. I would also expect that if a top seller made that mistake initially, they likely would have fixed up their files at this point.

The best way to review the print quality on any or all products is to use your own high-quality design & use the same design & quality on all other items, this way you have a standard to go by. By buying different designs from others you do not have this control. ( I have purchased my own designs many times on both mugs, t-shirts, hoodies, notebook & lots of stickers, each time the print is awesome, no blurred edges, super crisp, plus the colour difference is often people design in RGB colour which looks brighter & bolder on a screen, The actual print is created with CMYK profiles which have a colour limitation. My advice is always to design using a CMYK colour profile this way what you see is what you get. | Much Love, Peace & Respect | Stay Safe Ya'll

Hi! I am a graphic designer working in a printing company. Color issues like the ones you highlight are usually caused by the designer not optimizing the design for print. A reason for fuzzy edges is, most people just do a screen grab and upload a low-resolution image. You have to upload a 300dpi image you created then the printing should not at all have fuzzy edges unless they have a different way of printing.

Has anyone experienced any problems with Redbubble again? I have noticed that my settings within my designs have been disrupted. For example the design placement, they are all in the middle of the shirt, and I put them mostly in the top half of the shirt. Also background color, and default view. I put the background color black if the design is white, under the default product I choose a T-shirt in black color, and that design in my gallery is for some reason on a white background, and as the design is white no one can see it unless they directly enter into design within my portfolio. It seems to me that RB has a lot of technical problems lately ...

No. I design for POD products regularly, and have monitors suitable for that process. I know what colors I expect to see in my finished products that use the same colors that these products did, versus what we actually got. Secondly, even the whites were not white. When the white is not white, as I stated in this video they weren't, then you know it is definitely a printing issue 🙏 let alone the bleeding, fuzzy lines, etc.

The problem is that not all RGB colors reproduce correctly when they're printed on merch. I find this incredibly frustrating and I wish RedBubble, Printful would create a list of acceptable CMYK numbers to use. Printful did have a swatch shirt you could order -- but they recently got rid of it. WHY?? Anyway, a simple list would do fine.
@DerekMakerFitness3 жыл бұрын
Redbubble says they print in CMYK but a lot of artists design in RBG (which is a better range of bright colors). They don't really make it well known and I believe some products are actually printed with a wider range of colors. But this is one reason you see a big difference between the website and products. This was great thanks!
@WholesaleTed3 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I did take that into account when filming this video. I noted throughout that since every single product had color issues, that it is far more likely that Reddit’s printers are lower quality as a result of their low prices, to cause every product to be printed washed out, versus every single designer making this mistake and uploading a poorly optimized file 🙏

@WholesaleTed2 жыл бұрын
It's not RedBubble's fault it arrived late. Once a package is shipped, it's entirely out of their hands. It's now in the hands of the postal service. A merchant can only give you an estimate provided to them by the postal service. It's not fair to blame them for the postal service delivering your package late. With the extreme weather conditions currently and winter illnesses, there will be transport delays & a lack of staff. However, the print is definitely something you can take issue with. It's them that prints it - not the postal service ;)
@markzajac99932 жыл бұрын
@@WholesaleTed Well yes, I agree the responsibility is more on the delivering company and not so much on the printing company but I have been reading a LOT of reviews on Redbubble and it seems that delivery is a top complaint. With that said, if a company says this will be delivered days before Christmas and the item doesn't show, whether it's fair or not, I'm afraid it still becomes a reflection on the Redbubble Brand. So again, with that said, I have a simple solution for RB- just be super honest with your customers so they have realistic expectations when it comes to deliveries, especially around a holiday. That might mean lower sales around the days closer to Christmas ,but it would also mean less disappointed customers as well.

If you've ever come across a ghastly website and wondered why they used the colors they did; chances are it looks excellent in print. That's why I say in the video there is a possibility the files may not be optimised for print (as they may be using colors that can't be printed, rgb vs cmyk) but considering these are their top selling products that surely have modified their files to be optimised by now, and literally every product, including the white text t-shirt printed with off colors, this is almost certainly a printing issue. The white for example doesn't show on camera, but it wasn't a true white, it was an off white. That should have printed fine. But honestly, the products are so cheap - you can't expect Printful levels of products at RedBubble, it just isn't realistic.

Hey Sarah, do our product pages need to have 400+ words if we don't plan on running SEO traffic to them? Or will this negatively affect our SEO optimized category/homepages if we don't?
@WholesaleTed3 жыл бұрын
From my experience unoptimized pages in a store does not usually impact the SEO performance of optimised pages 🌞 but putting effort into creating awesome pages, whether they are optimised for keywords or not, with engaging content, will be noted by the Google algorithm as great overall content and will lift up your website as a whole, so my recommendation is that new stores should genuinely put a lot of effort into making every page on their website awesome for the user.

In this video you said you use Printful and in another you said you use Prinitify. Do you use both? Or was that just a mistake in this video? Thank you!

I use both. Printful is my main supplier, but I also use Printify as well for some products, particularly as a backup 🌞

@@WholesaleTed Thanks ♥I was wondering if you had any thoughts or videos already made about how to protect your profit margin and maintain sales when it comes to shipping cost? I am selling on Etsy and they recommend turning on the "free shipping for orders over $35" feature. I increased the cost of my products to help balance it out but I still had to eat $13 for shipping from Printify for 2 items. I can't increase the item cost too much or else no one will buy them... I also can't keep adding on shipping charges... I don't know what to do :( Help @Wholesale Ted!

Spent a week uploading on what feels like 1000 designs and just got my first sample shirt from Redbubble and the quality is HORRRIBLE. The shirt itself is whitish/grey and there is a huge faint yellow stain around the logo that extends to the sleeves to several inches below the logo, the black ink on the text is 4 different shades of black and fades in some areas and there are shadows on some of the text. Is this typical!?! Im so aggravated. Have you had this issue or was this a fluke?? If this isnt a good place what other POD has high quality? I spent so much time on my site so im so dissapointed right now

3:20 This isn't the printers fault, it is the designer's (or lack of) fault. They created the design in RGB when it needs to be designed in CYMK. Could have been a low res file too.
@WholesaleTed2 жыл бұрын
No, I addressed this in the video and explained why I believe this is not the designer's fault and why I believe it is RedBubble's fault. As I said in the video: 1) This is an experienced designer who has been selling their art online for a long time. They would have switched out their design file a long time ago if their file was not optimized. 2) Did you watch and see that every item I received had off colors, even the plain white text design? The logical conclusion is that instead of every single designer on RedBubble providing them with unoptimized files, that it is an issue with their printers 🙏🙏🙏
@WholesaleTed2 жыл бұрын
I think you would find this video helpful here, where I order the exact same optimized design onto a t-shirt from multiple Print On Demand providers, including RedBubble. You will see how the print turned out, compared to others. It is a well-known issue that RedBubble has factories that provide off-color quality prints: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHSze6ehhb2Fnpo

Hi Sarah, does the mug packaging have any warning signs on them to show delivery drivers to handle carefully? Would of been interesting if you did a drop test. What happens if the mug breaks.... does redbubble replace it or take the money back from you? What about returns too? FEES & PROFITS 🤔

I got a bathbat off printify and I do love it but the cost was insane. They didn't show me the cost to New Zealand before I clicked buy and the process fo buying was....I was expecting it to be like Amazon where it would show shipping cost and I would probably have not bought it when I saw that and translated to it being over nearly $60 NZ dollars for.....a bathmat. :-( It didn't give you time to think you just pressed buy and it was bought without telling you the shipping cost from my memory. But all that being said it is a very very beautiful bathmat.

As an artist and being familiar with other artists work I have to say I am really surprised on all the copyright infringement and flat out plagiarism on the Redbubble platform, I would never upload any of my original art, just saying

Hi Sarah, thanks so much for putting these videos together they really are helpful. I am in the process of trying to set up my own online shop and have been purchasing a few samples. I was hoping to use Redbubble as a platform, whoever, like you was really disappointed with the print quality. Even with plain white writing, like you sad, grainy, not consistent, looks like it could wash off after a few spins. So quick question, do you think the pros outweigh the cons re packaging, having access to the marketplace and all of their other merchandise options so it is worth opening up a shop with them, or would you give them a wide birth and stick to higher quality POD companies and use a different platform? Many thanks in advance
@WholesaleTed3 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on what your goals are with your new business! RedBubble is a favourite spot for teenagers and 20-somethings that like cool artwork but don't have a lot of money. They would rather purchase lower quality prints at lower prices, while having fun doing so at the same time. If that sounds fine to you, and all other parts of the RedBubble business model also sound good to you, then why not? If however you are an artist that wants to charge a premium for your designs and you want your art printed to a very high standard, RedBubble is not the right choice. There are pros and cons to all POD business models, the key is weighing up which one is right for YOU 🌞

Is it possible the bright designs you see on-site are actually uploaded in RGB format instead of CMYK? Hence it looks brighter than the end product. Because of what I understand that could be one of the major problem in the industry.
@yeye999503 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. It seems CMYK would be OK but RB color palette is RGB for uploading. So I'm using RGB

Hey! I am just wondering do they write your phone number on the sticker they put on the parcels. Because I ordered something that's gonna travel worldwide and when it'll land in my local post office the only way they can contact me is via my phone number. I do remember entering it in the order details and shipping and I also bought it with my PayPal which has all my info. I just would be comforting to know they do that and that I did not waste 50 bucks down the drains. Thanks!
