I worked with two Persian women years ago and the subject of nationality was very touchy. They made sure you knew they were Persian, not Iranian and took great offence to anything else, especially any association with Arab's. To them at least, Arab's had taken over their country and displaced the native Persian population. One of them invited myself and some of our coworkers to our first Persian restaurant which had incredible food and taught us about their culture around eating and traditional staples. Very interesting stuff.

Which is ironic because Persia is an exonym used by the Ancient Greeks to refer to the region and Iran is a pre-Islamic endonym for the region.

@@maneatingcheeze I think like @ericosagie3046 mentioned, it was tied in with the Islamic revolution to some degree. I don't remember the specifics, but I do remember anger over lost rights, etc. Interestingly enough, I've worked with a few Iranian men and they identify as such. I asked one guy about the Persian vs Arab thing and he said "no, they're our friends". For the two women, I'm assuming the loss of rights had a lot to do with their resentments.

theres actually two dividing lines in beverlly hills. As Vaush and the video says, Santa Monica Blvd seperates the middle-class from the rich people, but then a little further north Sunset Blvd seperates the rich people from the uber-rich people. Most of the houses shown here for the rich part of beverly hills are actually north of Sunset, because its only north of sunset that you *actually* get into the winding hills roads. The part inbetween Santa Monica and Sunset is still a grid of houses. .... I mean yeah the people there are very rich, but theres a pretty huge difference between people in 10 milllion dollar homes and people in 100 million dollar homes you can see it in the maps and when showing the view from above - its the winding road that sperates the grid from the more messy looking section.

14:50 you know how you look up cultural practices from ancient or contemporary societies and think some of them are so weird, unnecessary, & sometimes too cruel from our Anglo-point of view, things like ritual human sacrifice in bronze age & mesoamerican cultures, pederasty in greco-roman antiquity, harems in medieval muslim societies, & the foot-binding of women in pre-modern china, i could list a lot of other things Americans find unusual about other cultures, but Americans slapping a clean-cut grass lawn in literally every single geographic area they inhabit is definitely America’s weirdest and unnecessary cultural trait, like the entire southwest, great plains, rockies, and the sub-tropical parts of the south (especially florida) literally cannot naturally grow or sustain these types of grass lawns, yet Americans force houses and developments to have them as default and they contribute greatly to water scarcity in those regions, i mean here in florida grass lawns start to dry up and die after a week with no rain, in summer we constantly have to have the sprinklers on at least twice a week, i can’t imagine how much water is wasted in maintaining grass lawns in the literal desserts of Nevada, Arizona, & New Mexico

I live in Northern California and I can definitely say it's not just Beverly Hills that feel entitled to all the water, it's the agricultural sector. It's literally illegal to collect rain water in personal basins because it's considered state property. And by state, they mean the government land that mass produces food for the state. All the rest of the state was forced to limit out water consumption while all the rich assholes and farmers got the lion's share. That's why most lawns here have been replaced with desert-scaping or, even worse, astro turf. 🤢 But, thanks to this last rainy season, my city is out of the drought. Our local lake is fuller than it's been in a long time. Let's hope we can keep it up this next winter because it seems like everyone else piggybacks off us.

Eh, that could be. Depends on whether were talking about the big corporate farms or small farmers. Probably the corp farms could take a water cut. Tbh SoCal just might not be a good region for farming anymore. NorCal is a different situation, though, being the most productive farmland in the whole country, we honestly have to give NorCal farmers at least *some* leeway. I think if we just make big corporations more responsible for their water use, scarcity would be way less of a problem

up in the actual hills are the old money/ultra wealthy celebrities/saudi oil money/etc. this is where a lot of the mega mansions are, or just older "mansions" on fairly large lots. around the beverly hills hotel is still really in the hills, nothing changes much until you cross sunset. even then the only thing that really changes is they're slightly less wealthy than the hills, but still more money than most of us are ever likely to have in our entire lives. the lots tend to be smaller, and not really mega-mansion friendly except for the few that have bought multiple lots and combined them. crossing santa monica is where the real shift happens. you've still got to be fairly well off to live there, especially if you actually own something and not just rent one of the apartments that start to pop up at that point. but it does start to get at least slightly more in the realm of reason.
