In every landscape, it is important to show systemic failures through the eyes of the people that are the victims of these miscarriages of justice.

I’m a South African listener and I simply love Coco and Nish… they have slowly made into my weekend self care routine. There is something really comforting about listening to the chaos of British politics while pretending to reset my life every week… Also Coco saying ‘Tinder is hell and Hinge is war’ should be made into merch. Please do merch and the podsavetheUK match maker… let’s make it that all former British colonies can participate! 💗

I'm with Nish here, I suspect part of the reason Progressives don't talk about declining birth rates is that the solution to said problem is the same solution they'd suggest for much more topical issues like homelessness, child poverty, elder care, economic instability, women's rights, and myriad other problems: Tax the rich to fund social services, fix the broken immigration system, and implement systemic reforms to make the country less inhospitable for those who can't or won't work a 9-5 job. If increasing education for women goes hand-in-hand with them choosing not to have children, that kind of implies that the only people who are having kids are doing so accidentally, which would further imply that the current status quo is pressuring people into remaining childless.

38:44 Regarding women need to have more children: the existing capitalist & political system was not built to take women’s social, economic, or political needs into consideration when creating public policy. The right can blithely say “women need to have more children” when they do not consider why are women not having children and what can we do to make having children easier. US conservatives think the answer to this is women need to get married! And making abortion illegal. I would like to think the left understands more why the birth rate is dropping. However, the left are scared to propose any social policies because conservatives will scream “how will we pay for it?” The death nell of any progressive agenda. Suggesting we reimpose taxes on the rich that have been implemented over the last 40+ years is not allowed. The lower classes just need to make babies to supply a workforce for the upper classes. Therefore, we are stalled.

I think that is where podcasts sometimes are better. The humanising of stories in a podcast or through movies or television is just the ultimate hot knife through butter.

There definitely need to be prosecutions in the PO case. The PO and Fujitsu LIED at least twice (but repeatedly) when they said no one else had access to the system (utter nonsense to anyone who has the slightest familiarity with computer systems - how do you do updates if you don't have access?) and when they told the subpostmasters over and over again "you're the only one who is having problems".

Why is Fujitsu dominating UK IT Systems? ICL (International Computers Limited) existed as a commercial entity and brand from 1968 to 2002; perhaps the flagship computer manufacturer of the UK until it was finally and completely absorbed into its eventual, Japanese owner Fujitsu.

One of the things the newspapers were doing throughout the Post Office Scandal was printing headlines about 'fraudsters stealing from pensioners' and the like, pandering to a certain part of their readership that loves to hear of wrongdoers getting banged up. Hardly any of them seem to have been paying any attention to any defences the postmasters put up - I realise many were intimidated into pleading guilty to try to avoid custodial sentences - and they mostly showed a real failure of proper journalistic curiosity.

Why don’t they try a system like the Public Broadcast System in America - limited advertising with donations from the public and government?
@EdwardLindon10 ай бұрын
You're being over-generous to the public. It's not journalists' fault that the general public are uninterested in detail, nuance and complexity. The story was out there and many of us knew about it. It took a TV drama to make it a scandal because people are oblivious and uncurious.

Declining birthrates; it's right that the economy is a factor, but also*gestures wildly* have you seen the state of the world? Who wants to raise kids into this? Ironically the downside are all economical - given 'growth is the only way out of this' (spurious logic at best). Environmentally it's good that there are less kids born, right? Most people can only have choices about what they buy and what they do for their own family, saying they need to have more kids for the economy is such a fractured and gross argument that puts money above everything - after this period of Tory rule, surely people see that's not the way it SHOULD be?
@deancostello1410 ай бұрын
I'd probably have more than 1 kid if I had more money, so if there was a better economy I'd be more comfortable having more than 1 child, and I don't think that's just me who has that sort of opinion.

JH: "... and through the individual stories, [the Public] they understand systems." Oh, good god, yes. And having said that, I have no faith that the legacy media would attempt this now - if only because, somewhere in the mess, the owners of said media have their fingers (or their dear friends have *their* fingers) in those dirty rotten pies. I appreciate that JH was talking about the potential lessons that podcasters can learn from &/or exploit, but, within my lifetime, the legacy media had excelled at this. I'm in Australia. In the early 80s, I studied environmental biology. The way I was taught about biological systems, to recognise connections therein, was a skill that I could later use - as a member of the informed/interested laity - to follow the corruption within the media. If your starting point is the environment, biased, enabling, obfuscating, co-opted journalism (so-called) is very easy to spot. Indeed, they often don't even make an effort to hide so intrinsic is this pap from the Press. Once upon a time, the Media had prizes and industry recognitions for following socially disfunctional systems: politics, organised blue-collar crime, organised white-collar crime, public service cover-ups that follow after dreadful laziness (or deliberate corruption). That media doesn't exist anymore. It probably hasn't since the late 90s. Certainly, Rupert Murdoch sits atop this particular ethical ponzi scheme, but his example was happily followed - in the US, the UK and in Australia. Podcasters, the modern-day pamphleteers, now have to rebuild the Public's appreciation of, their understanding of, and their trust in journalists. It will take generations.

In one part do I value to BBC however as time has gone on, they are not staying neutral at all, they are falling more right wing, their reporting is transphobic, their coverage of Palestine is despicable, and more and more they are just debating not reporting, I would like a calm discussion of politics that has not time constraint, allowing multiple sides to have equal time to talk not just a shouting match.

39:23 I don’t think it’s fair to moan about overpopulation on the one hand and when nature balances itself out; complain about a declining birthrate.
