I totally agree on the 3BF. It's like a friend's very nice doggo that cheers you up and wants to play everytime he sees you

Ditto on the Doug Elliott C+ cup / D3 shank. That's exactly what I use on my small bore. Great mouthpiece.
@randscott4676 Жыл бұрын
What kind of rim are you using on your C+ cup? Metal or plastic? The D3 is probably more open than the D2? Does your setup make a good lead horn? Thanks!
@jeffgrubin1874 Жыл бұрын
@@randscott4676 I use an XT104 wedge style rim, metal. I actually use a D2 which is the tightest backbore, which works well on my Shires small bore horn.

The Yamaha Marching bari is the best bari I’ve ever played, it sounds amazing. Not too canny like a concert baritone, but it’s also not too dark like a euph. You can play loud without overblowing, but the one thing I hate so much about it is the god awful tuning tendencies. Middle C with 1st valve is flat to the point it’s almost not usable, middle and high G are so sharp I have to pull out, and with 3rd valve they’re just flat. It’d be perfect without the dumb tuning. Also it does have a .571 bore which is gigantic for a baritone.
@AidanRitchie Жыл бұрын
Yup, I'm well aware of the tuning tendencies, I marched one for 4 years!
@seth0949782 жыл бұрын
That straight bass is very interesting. I tried tenor trombone for one lesson, and hated it compared to euphonium. I bet that instrument might feel more familiar and be nicer to play (plus I could use a large mouthpiece; I feel cramped on a 6 1/2 AL and use a 1 1/4G on my euph)
@AidanRitchie2 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you just need a better mouthpiece for tenor!

I think the Yamaha marching baritone is .571” and the compensated euphonium is .591”, but I personally prefer the video ending with contra anyways.

Yep, strangely, the Yamaha marching bari is .571, it’s pretty damn beefy

Yo Aidan, what do you think is a bigger challenge: the physical aspect of playing, or the mental aspect? I've been questioning this a lot recently, but I haven't found many answers. I think our individual ideas of failure and success might have a lot to do with our time in the practice room.
@AidanRitchie2 жыл бұрын
Mental, 100%. The physical is only made harder when the brain isn't in the right space. When you are dialed in mindwise, the physical part is surprisingly easy
@Symphing122 жыл бұрын
Is that straight bass supposed to be a bass trombone in G?
@AidanRitchie2 жыл бұрын
Nope, those are actually very small- most of them are .485, with only the very last Boosey "Betty" models being .525. They usually had 8 inch or smaller bells as well. This is larger (but not longer, of course) than any G bass made.

Nice collection. I was surprised at the King 3B/F. I thought it sounded the best of any of your instruments - maybe just the microphone set up for that specific horn, but I've heard so many good things about Shires, Greenhoe, Edwards, I was surprised that a King would sound so good. Have you ever tried the solid silver sonic version? What are your opinions about different material - not just plating, but solid copper, solid silver, red brass, solid bronze or yellow brass (and there are a lot of blends of yellow brass)?
@AidanRitchie Жыл бұрын
I actually JUST made a video about different bell materials! It's from maybe a week or so ago if you check. The gist of it is the bell material makes a difference, but it's all small degrees of feedback and sound rather than massive changes... and it's almost impossible to generalize. Yes, I love my 3B/F- it's one of my best trombones despite costing me a grand total of like $300. I have actually owned 3 3B/Fs and 3 more 3Bs, two of them Silversonic. I really like the Silversonic sound and response, but I don't necessarily love the weight or how it blends with others. The brass bell sounds great, plays great, and works with others with no issues.

Also, it just came to mine but what strap/ergo would you recommend for the 613G for someone with moderately large hands? My hand tends to cramp with long (2+ hour) practices/rehearsals on my bass and tenor both so I’d like to look into that.
