The Horrell Massacre in Lincoln, New Mexico, 1873

Years before Billy the Kid's arrival in Lincoln, five brothers from the Horrell clan moved to the area from Texas. The violent and hateful ways of the brothers very quickly pitted them against the locals. The violence reached its peak just five days before Christmas, 1873, when the brothers massacred the guests at a wedding celebration in Lincoln.

I went thru Lincoln a few weeks ago, primarily to see the Billy the Kid grave, etc. I need to go back and spend a few days exploring more of the local history. Beautiful area. Thanks for the story, first time hearing it.

Hope you get to make it back! Billy is actually buried in Fort Sumner, about two and a half hours northeast of Lincoln. But Lincoln has plenty of Billy-related history. @@badhossmaps You're right. I blame old age for mixing them up. I'll go back once the burn ban is lifted, and I can camp in the Lincoln NF. Couldn't do it when I went, had everything shut down.

Great video. Lincoln sure was a town with a blood-soaked, violent past. The biggest mistake a young Englishman from Victoria, British Columbia named John Tunstall ever made was to travel there in 1876 seeking cheap land to establish a sheep ranch, and start his own business. Tunstall could not have understood just how wild and lawless and dangerous Lincoln and New Mexico really was in those days.

Mart and Tom were killed in my hometown (Meridian, Texas), I always found it interesting to have that connection to Lincoln County and some of the events leading up to the Lincoln County wars. To add to it, Brushy Bill lived about 40 minutes from meridian in Hamilton and hico, both in Hamilton County...where Billy Clanton was born.

As a member of the Horrell family ( moms side ) this is a great video but the But the mispronunciation of the family name makes it hard to listen to

We've had some debate about how to pronounce the name, as we don't know any surviving Horrells. If you'd like to shed some light on that we'd love to hear it.
