I stumbled across this today as a random recommendation. My friend was working at the Australia Post Philatelic Bureau on the 12th floor. Once he (I shan't mention his name) walked into the Bureau, he wounded a man and woman before aiming at my friend, who was getting out of her chair and trying to hide beneath her desk. He walked over, pointed at her head and pulled the trigger. The gun jammed, so he cleared the chamber and instead adjusted his aim and motion to the left...and this time shot Julie McBean, Nancy Avignone and Warren Spencer dead. The first I knew of any of this was through a news flash on TV, where the very first thing I saw was my friend, sobbing hysterically as the TV cameras were thrust in her face. Only 17 at the time, she went through a few tough years (including "Survivor's Guilt"), but eventually emerged to now live a happy life with a son in his twenties. Thanks for providing a respectful and sympathetic account.

I was at work a block away from the scene and arrived at the scene about five minutes after Vitkovic hit the footpath. Police at that time still had the scene secured as they were unsure as to whether there may have been another shooter, given that there were so many shots fired. - I photographed the street scene for the newspapers. This was at a time when there were no mobile phones, so there was money to be earned by freelance photojournalists. However, when the survivors were brought out I put the camera down. I felt that they couldn't pay enough for me to make the survivors' time worse by infringing on their grief. - Not long before Vitkovic's awful crime, Melbourne was shaken by the mass murder of innocent motorists and pedestrians when, on the evening of Sunday, 9 August 1987, Julian Knight murdered seven people during the Hoddle Street massacre, injuring an additional nineteen civilians, in Clifton Hill, an inner suburb of Melbourne. More at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoddle_Street_massacre - The year before that, the Russell Street bombing was the 27 March 1986 bombing of the Russell Street Police Headquarters complex in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. The explosion killed Angela Taylor, the first Australian policewoman to be killed in the line of duty. - The explosion was caused by a car bomb hidden in a stolen 1979 Holden Commodore, (bearing Victoria registration plate; AVQ-508). The explosion caused a massive amount of damage to the police station and surrounding buildings, estimated at more than A$1 million. - The Age reported that the blast's impact was enhanced by the open-floor design of the offices, which had acted like a Claymore mine, sending more shrapnel as the blast ripped through the floors and adding more pressure to the blast as it followed its path. - The blast seriously injured 21-year-old Police Constable Angela Taylor, who died on 20 April, becoming the first Australian policewoman to be killed in the line of duty. 22 other people were injured. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Street_bombing - It would take yet another mass murder for Australia to tighten its gun laws, when Martin Bryant killed 35 people in a mass shooting in 1996, in Tasmania, which became known as the Port Arthur massacre. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Arthur_massacre_(Australia)

I want to personally *THANK YOU* for the “7 Continents in 7 days” of videos you have given us! We know it was such a huge undertaking and you would never know it by your content! You put just as much effort, if not more, in these videos. So your quality did *not* suffer at all! Regarding this video, I absolutely *LOVE* how instead of this feeling like another “killing spree” video, it felt.....different. It wasn’t the same old, “here’s another nutball that went off on a killing spree and here’s is a list of all of his victims”. To me, this was much more about the hero’s and all of the lives they saved! You not only mentioned the ones who bravely stood up to their attacker, some of them mortally wounded, but you told the story of how they played a part in disarming this nut! Even down to the lady who hid the gun in the fridge (brilliantly if you ask me)! Thank you so much again and I’m looking forward to next Wednesday,! (I swear, I’ve been spoiled this week!)

Dear BlackMuddyRiver: This is why the gun laws here in America are insane. It only took a couple of these mass murders in Australia for the Govt there to severely restrict private gun ownership. Here in Gun Cuckoo America, mass shootings like these have become an everyday occurrence and yet the Gun Nuts here still argue that it's their Constitutional Right to own guns, and the American Govt actually goes along with them. Private gun ownership meant one thing in pre-Industrial society when everyone lived on a farm, your closest neighbor was a couple of miles away by dirt road, and there were no organized police depts. But today gun ownership for "self defense" is a ridiculous idea simply because society has become more stable and established because of modern developments. In any case, there is NO Reason for military weapons (like the one in this case) to EVER be sold to the public because they are sophisticated human killing machines intended for war. Yet the Gun Nuts here in America argue that they even have the "right" to own an AK47, a weapon too powerful even for hunting game. A Sick Society is destined to generate its share of Sick People and that is the History of America from every angle IMO. Australia and the UK have both severely restricted gun ownership, yet no one in these countries seems to be suffering from it. How did the right to own a gun in Australia save any of the people killed in this story ? It didn't. ... jkulik919@gmail.com

This is so sad. I hate this not only for the victims, but because it makes people fear any sort of mental illness. They think that anybody with mental problems are going to be like this man, when most really won't go this far and are willing to get help. Please don't judge us all by what people like this man did. We are not all mass murderers
@bellalegendre26444 жыл бұрын
Agreed! There is a stigma about mental illness that makes it hard to seek help and be taken seriously. My parents tried to tell me that mental illness was "something you catch from white people". I kid you not. I have trauma from the abuse I endured from them and they blamed my pain and mental instability on my white friends. Makes no damn sense to this day.

Sorry, but bullied or not, this doesn’t excuse the bastard. Just because you’re bullied doesn’t mean you have to go out, get yourself a gun and start shooting innocent people, especially those who had nothing to do with the actual bullying. The guy was a sick bastard to begin with. We’ve all been bullied, sorry but that’s the way of the world, sometimes it’s cruel, you may have your fantasy utopia where no one ever gets hurt or offended, but that’s exactly what it is, a fantasy. I’ve been bullied at some stage in my life, who hasn’t? What makes a person is how they choose to handle it, do they change, improve themselves as a person, do they take it to heart or deflect it with humour? Like the fat kid who always came last at running in school. He was fat because he ate his own lunch, bought extra then tried to eat everyone else’s. A huge fat pig, who got bullied for never finishing the run. Did he kill us all? No he got bullied and did something about it, he left school 5 years later in great shape, respect to him, he changed his life and got healthier in the process. Bullying can be cruel, but it can have benefits. Ideally it would be nice to live in a world it didn’t exist, but that isn’t ever going to happen, as humans it’s not how we roll. Now, this guy was a fruitcake and those people did not deserve to die just because he felt bullied. He was mentally ill and violent by nature. A bastard that rather than admit his own failings would rather hold others responsible. A guy who couldn’t admit he was wrong.

I agree. I've never been able to wrap my head around or understand that desire, or need, to kill others, when they just plan on killing themselves, or getting killed in the end, anyway. How does that give them any satisfaction, or change anything for them. They are dead, shortly after their victims. What difference does it make to them, if their victims are killed or not. It wont make a difference to them, in a matter of minutes/hours/days. It just infuriates me so badly. The most pointless and frustrating of all killings, in my opinion. I mean, obviously, *ALL* murders and killings are pointless, frustrating, unnecessary, and heartbreaking. And it's not that I'm saying one is worse than the other. I just don't understand what the point is to these kinds of killings. Like, even to the killers! SMH. Makes me sick and heartbroken, any tine i hear of these kinds of killings. Well, again, that applies to all murders. But I think ya know what I mean.

8 days in a row....I have been looking forward to getting home and relaxing. What occurred was such a tragedy and you did a very good job of making it about the victims.

Well, here I am, an Australian and I had no memory of this tragedy. It would have hit home with me at the time as I was a bank employee, working in a city centre(Brisbane, thankfully, not Melbourne) Thank you so much, not just for this presentation, but also for the respect you showed to the victims. Your little verbal ‘snapshots’ giving the personal details were touching. Thanks, Crimey, for a terrific production. P.S. I thought you had a PayPal donation site? Or something similar? Here I am, payday, and I wanted to shout you a virtual coffee! You and Brief, I’m certain I remembered at least one of you having some kind of donation site, if not Patreon. But instead...if not *why not* ? How come other You Tubers, with far less talent, and doing a lot less work are always prompting people to give, and you guys just keep working away, with apparently no method to allow us to support you? Anyhoo, as I said, this was a special one. Like most commenters I felt sorry for him at first, but soon enough found myself hoping he’d die a horrible prolonged death. Thank you for a really high quality production. I really liked that your research had been so thorough, that you knew about the Port Arthur massacre, and what that meant for our gun laws.

Wow, that is strange that you hadnt heard it before, thanks for your feedback on the story too. I dont have a paypal but have been wondering whether I should or not as I keep getting some kind offers from people. Typically I have always spent my life trying to help others, I dont know if its right to ask. For now please, keep your generous offer and your money this month and maybe next payday there maybe one (please dont feel that I am being rude though because it is so kind of you). Thank you so much for the offer, Ive just raised my cup of tea to you and said "cheers Bilinda"

Although this incident is horrific, you made it about the victims, which in itself is a beautiful gesture. Thank you so much for your great content!

I appreciate that you highlighted the victims as often as possible, the victims deserved to be remembered more than the perpetrator. As someone being bullied to the point of physical injuries, I felt pity to Frank and kinda understood he felt the world wronged him - but I completely condemned of the attack. As much as you felt wronged and desire revenge, violence is still not the answer. My heart and prayers goes to all the victims. Innocent victims that didn't even know him...

Thanks for the great videos. You deserve a rest. Psst it will give me time to catch up on other people's videos, no way I was missing yours, LoL. I can get my head around hurting someone who hurt you but this random killing of strangers makes no sense in any way to me. I worked with a young girl that was in the Dawson school shooting and after that they really started locking down the schools here, I worried about my son when he was at school. Years before that we had the Polytechnic school shooting also. This is in Montreal. Random violence is so frightening, I remember a news article also about someone on bath salts biting the face off another passenger on a public bus.

Thank you for focusing so much on the victims. They often get ignored when people talk about spree and serial killers. I'd rather remember the names of victims than the name of their killer.
