Inside of one of the deadliest concentration camps of the Second World War, there was part of the camp which became known for it's evil torture and execution. Buchenwald Concentration Camp in German means Beech Forest, and the camp was set in the woodlands, but inside of the forest there were evil SS guards who carried out horrific torture. Martin Sommer became known as 'The Hangman of Buchenwald,' as he would use the forest to suspend inmates by their arms in terrifying torture, and he also used it as a place to execute two priests.
But there were other guards that marched prisoners into the forest, and they would never return. The SS ordered the creation of a number of gallows and this was to punish people who had been involved in an incident which resulted in the death of a concentration camp guard. The 'Singing Forest' as it was known was a horrifying place, and was a terrifying part of Buchenwald.

Back in 1984, I was 22 years old and living at home. I was working a third shift job and going to school. We had a bedroom in the basement and I used that to grab a few hours of sleep between work, classes and homework. One day I heard some shouting upstairs so I got up to see what was going on. As I was heading up the steps, I heard my Dad shout, "No, no, NO!! I was there!!!" When I got upstairs, there was my Dad shouting at the TV and he had tears running down his face. This was odd because I had never EVER seen my Dad cry. I ask him what was wrong, he turned to me and said, "Kelly, I was there! I had seen the bodies stacked like wood! Kelly, I was THERE! The ovens were still warm!!" It took me a few minutes to figure out what was going on and why my Dad was upset. Apparently he was watching some talk show on TV where one of the guest was saying that the holocaust never happened and he was like totally freaked that someone would be saying that! He knew that was a lie because he served in Patton's Third Army, Fourth Armored Division and was there at Buchenwald when it was liberated. He had seen all of the horrors of war in Europe, from the breakout of Normandy, the battle for northern France, the Battle of the Bulge and the ghastly horrors of the concentration camps so he knew what happened first hand. I didn't know what I could do for my Dad at the time other than just hug him and let him sob. This is something that I will remember for the rest of my life...

This is why the regime in Iran and all the Muslim terrorists in the Middle East (Hezbollah, Hamas, Palestinian Authority, ISIS, Al Qaeda) must be eliminated. They too deny that the Holocaust happened and they too want to exterminate Jewry. They are the Nazis of our time.

I absolutely agree. We had a camp survivor come speak to my class when I was in middle school, (many, MANY moons ago) and it has stayed, and will stay, with me. Now, there aren't very many survivors left alive to tell their stories in person, and the schools seemingly don't find it important to show the multitudes of witness/survivor interviews collected by the Yad Vashem, and other entities working to document the experiences of those who faced the Nazis, and lived. Is it that teachers/schools fear having to navigate the ever growing number of Holocaust deniers, anti-semites, BDSers, and the like? I have my suspicion, but whatever the reason, they do a disservice to the survivors, their students, and the rest of the world, when they fail to adequately teach kids about history. The adage about those not paying attention to history being "doomed to repeat it" is just as real when it's that kids simply weren't TAUGHT about history... and the things that have happened when hatred and cruelty towards people deemed "less than" are unleashed, whether in the name of hatred, or war.

My father in the US army 41-46. Much of that time under Patton's 3rd army (687th FAB C battery ). ...Normandy, battle of the hedgerows, Bastogne relief, Battle of the Bulge.....His last duty was helping with "the clean up " of Buchenwald.....He said when they set up showers that some GIs had to go in first because Nazi "showers" often resulted in death so they were afraid... Also, many inmates died because many GIs often gave them whatever food they had.... And their weakened systems could not handle solid foods..... Now it is common knowledge that peanut butter is one of the best foods for this situation...

Jordan Peterson described the "possibility" that he himself had terribly evil impulses and that they needed to be re-directed. So did Alexander Solzhenitsyn. He recognized that "by being a true believer" in Communism, he HIMSELF contributed to the horrors of the Gulag. He did NOT excuse himself. He looked in the mirror and judged himself. Christianity concentrates on self-sin and tries to re-direct it. In that sense, it is an "honest" religion. It does not try to excuse or put aside personal guilt. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

After the SS trial Sommer received a reduction in rank and was sentenced to a penal battalion fighting on the Eastern Front where he was wounded in a tank explosion, losing his left arm and right leg. He was taken captive by the Red Army and was detained as P.O.W. until 1950 when his prisoner status was upgraded to war criminal. He was released from Soviet captivity in 1955 as part of the negotiations conducted on behalf of Soviet held German prisoners by Konrad Adenauer. Retrial After his release he returned to West Germany where he married, fathered a child and filed for and received a pension for his service related disabilities. He escaped punishment for his crimes until 1957, when he was indicted for complicity in the death in 101 concentration camp inmates. In July 1958 in Bayreuth district court in West Germany where he was ultimately convicted of 25 deaths and received a life sentence. Upon appeal the case was upheld in May 1959 by the Federal Court. He died in the prison hospital in 1988.

I think that Hitler finding him too cruel should not be a surprise, and in fact it’s part of one of the most important lessons from WW2. The horror unleashed was the result of mostly squeamish paper pushers on the top end and psychos below. Himmler famously threw up when he actually witnessed a mass execution. That’s what is so dangerous about political extremism: you will always have terrible people like Goeth, Heydrich and Sommer, but what’s really scary is when you have relatively normal people like Himmler supporting and encouraging people like that to do their worst.

This whole place was like a medieval dungeon for sadists who have a limitless number of helpless victims to torment. But everybody wasn’t a sadist or a fiend. I’ve read stories of SS guards who tried to get out of these hellholes but they were told it’s their duty to serve and that the only vacancies are on the eastern front (basically a death sentence). A regular SS guard who ended up here would be a nobody and could be shot for disobedience almost as easily as the prisoners. I’m not sure what would be left of my own sanity or humanity if I had to watch this brutality or be forced to participate in it day after day after day with no end in sight.

"To Each His Own" was interpreted as meaning "You Can Do Whatever Shit You Want"? Really? He, he, you are one creative dude dude! Now, let's see... what are WE supposed to interpret "Whatever Shit You Want" as meaning, how about: torture, violence, murder, babies on bayonets... Oh, murder... I said it already? Darn, I need some practice, incubators? Nah.

One of the more terrifying aspects to this story of horror is that it has, and will continue to happen. I'm sure the Uyghurs would present evidence of how wonderfully they're treated by the communist Chinese.

Well post world war 1 sanctions sort of gave birth to world war 2. The difficulties imposed on Germany allowed for the Nazis to become popular. In recent years in western countries the rise of populism has demonstrated how the Nazis could take over. Before thisbi struggled to understand but recent events have opened my eyes.

@@macflod the famous pic where there a near naked man in a camp barrack with men lying in their bunks is the same...the original pic appeared in a US newspaper in 1943 (i have seen it) without the naked man standing next to the wooden upright beam...there are lots of these examples..same with many docs..all designd to add weight to the fal sss narrative but people are so easily led..think the last 3 years and whats gone on
