Cannot tell you how much I love your channel, the cases you describe and your telling of the story is amazing, you keep your listeners spellbound by your words and accounts of the terrible incidents with crimes we have heard about and others like this Phoebe Cambell case most of us haven't. Plus your famously said intros of " Sit back as we GO to---". I even get a kick out of your thumbnail logo of the man lying on the ground with the little briefcase by him. Almost 400,000 subscribers, congratulations, you deserve ever one of them.

I can't believe Phoebe was guilty, but her lover was not? That's insane, George could have easily overpowered his wife, so there had to be two murderers. Sometimes, justice isn't justice at all. Great job as usual, BC.

I often wonder when I hear such stories about the trauma the women who commit these crimes may have endured from men throughout their lives. Perhaps George was kind and in such a case would not deserve such a terrible death. Perhaps he was abusive. We will never know. @@Real_g.s.

It is always shocking to me that people disatisfied with their life would choose murder over leaving. She and Coyle could have simply run off, leaving George distraught, sure, maybe heartbroken, but alive and the children with a parent. She was very young and could have made a new start. I can't believe Coyle got off with no punishment. Thank you for this story from the next province over from mine. I had never heard of it.
@FinnishLapphund
@FinnishLapphund Жыл бұрын
Leaving isn't always that easy now either, but in general, it was even more difficult back then. I've heard of cases from other parts of the world were a wife who had chosen to leave, without that it involved her living with anyone else, being ordered by court to return to live with her legal husband. Even though in some of those cases, it was known that the husband had beaten his wife so badly she nearly died, and the court still sent the wife back, telling the couple to talk to their local priest to solve their problems. Anyhow, the Campbell's lived in the Ontario province, and according to what I've read, that province didn't have any divorce law at all until 3 or 4 years before this murder happened, but somehow, it was only in 1930 that the courts of Ontario were given jurisdiction to actually grant divorces. Which is 59 years after this murder happened! To that comes that divorce laws can have strict rules for why you could seek a divorce. E.g. in the English Matrimonial Causes Act from 1857 (which was used in some Canadian provinces, but Ontario wasn't one of them), a husband could sue for divorce needing only one reason, that his wife had committed adultery, but a wife had to be able to allege adultery together with other grounds. On top of that, getting a law which allows divorces doesn't automatically also make it socially acceptable to actually get a divorce. All this together probably made it more tempting for some people to find other "solutions" to their problem, than just leaving, and trying to get a divorce. I also vaguely recall reading something somewhere about that old laws about divorce in some countries had clauses, which meant that even if you did get a divorce, it didn't always also mean that you had the right to remarry someone else. I can easily see how that might have lead to giving some persons ideas about preferring to want to become a widow/widower.

As soon as she blamed two black men I knew she was guilty, either of the actual murder or as an accomplice. But her lover being found not guilty wasn't right. She might have been strong for a small woman, but I don't think she could've have done that on her own, George was a farmer so he was strong too, and could've easily gotten away, or gotten the axe, if it had been just her. Her lover got away with murder.

I would LOVE for you to look into the Donnelley's of Lucan, Ontario, Canada. It all started in the early 1800's when they moved from Tipperary Ireland to Lucan. To this day, it's not something you talk about. It's more or less taboo to mention them. But, to make a long very interesting story short, the whole town got together and killed most of the family, and no one was held accountable. It's a fascinating story.

@C-Here Hello, C. Just a clarification: If you get off _scot-free_ you avoid punishment for doing something that deserves punishment. For example: 'Although the police caught him red-handed, the judge said there wasn’t enough evidence, and he got off scot-free.' The word *scot* in this sense has nothing to do with Scotland or Scotsmen, however. *Scot* is believed to be a word of old Germanic origin that is related to the words 'shot' and 'shoot'. In medieval England the *scot* was a tax levied on the members of a village or town which all the inhabitants had to pay in proportion to the size of their property or the extent of their land. Some people avoided the *scot* however, often because their houses were built in unfavourable places such as hills with no water or places prone to flooding. Such people were described as scot-free and the term has now come to describe anyone who avoids a punishment or financial penalty that they would normally have to serve or pay. [Credit: onestopenglish] Stay free, C. Rab (72-year-old Scotsman!) 🍻 😎
@LucienSabre
@LucienSabre Жыл бұрын
@@RHR-221b Thanks for the clarification. That makes the term even apter - Phoebe’s lover deserved to be sentenced and hanged alongside her because he was as guilty as her, instead he got not punishment for his crime. That to me is the embodiment of getting off scot-free.

@@F40PH-2CAT Regardless if she said black face or not, my point is is she said black. Let that sink in. How many men during that time were hanged just for being black without committing a crime? As I said it still happens to this very day. A black man was just released from prison after spending years in prison accused of ra-e. Only to find out the woman accused was white lied 🤥. Yes, he sued the city and won, but no charges were brought against her. A simple lie can destroy someone’s life or have their life taken by being hanged

Did she have an attorney? No one advised her? And letting the guy off because of conflicting stories is completely ridiculous. The man swung the axe, she certainly couldn't have done that on her own. This was at a time where lawyers were NOT a right. If you did not have an attorney, there was no public defenders office. Unless you had connections, or a lawyer had an axe to grind and took you up as pro bono, you were responsible for securing for your attorney. Her and her husband were barely scrapping by. This right wasn’t even added until the 1900s.

I suppose it's easy now to wonder how people who committed such crimes in the past could be so sloppy regarding evidence, crime scene clues, and eyewitness testimony. One would have to be aware of every possible aspect of all of those (and more) to successfully plan and execute and get away with murder. If all you have is your own limited scope of experience, it appears that's all that others would have at hand by which to judge you and your actions. I do hope her children were cared for and lived with as much peace as possible.

A tragic tale once again. I had a feeling that Phoebe did it. Poor George. What a senseless killing. Phoebe looks cold and dead eyed in her picture. A hard life? Or not caring?

She looks like she may be ‘a bit simple’ as they used to say. Quite sad really in that she prob knew her husbands family didn’t want him to marry her, resentment builds and then this happens. And it still happens today!

What an evil woman!! She did have cold looking eyes. Emotionless, and i feel she was also severely mentally ill. Poor George. He seems to have been a good man. Im happy justice was served. Thank-you again BC, you deliver every time!!!❤

Another well-done presentation of murder and intrigue. Poor Phoebe, she was so desperate to escape the life she hated, that she wound up committing the ultimate of betrayals for a lover who clearly cared little for her. I think there were quite a few women of that era, who chose instead to abandon their lives and families, and simply ran off. It always baffles me why people choose murder instead of divorce; as though they were choosing which fruit to adorn that morning's cereal. I'll never understand it. I'd wager though, that the lover was dogged with remorse until his dying day. And that, can be a punishment in itself.

These stories are all quite intriguing. But it is your diction and voice itself as well as your accent and long gone words and expressions that make us listeners imagine you once witnessed such events and are miraculously able to tell these stories while still in the past. This is what makes these videos so fascinating. The quality of you work is rare and astonishingly brilliant. Thank you so much.
