So many scary elements in this show. For me, the most frightening part is people willingly signing up for the procedure without fully realizing how messed up it is.

For me the scariest part is being an innie. Anyone who already spend some years full time working will be familiar with the fantasy of 'oh I wish I could just snap my fingers and blink to the end my shift' . This show takes that literally and goes to it's logical conclusion. Just image finally reaching the end of the shift, clocking out, door opens and you back, for you it's one continuos existanceof only work, 24/7, 365 days a year, no breaks, no sleep, no distraction, privacy, nothing, just this cryptic mumbo jumbo and those damn liminal spaces. During the first few episodes I was like 'if I was her I would just hang myself in the elevator so that piece of shit other me chokes on this' and it's exactly what she tried doing next.

I think only way it can be made to not be torture is to give them memories only associated with work so they don’t even know there’s a real world. They know about “outside” and that people have kids in the “real world” and they know they have an “innie” and that they should have known their real name and family name. Since they know something is missing they know to miss their “real life”.

I watched this show a little less than a year before discovering that I have DID, and let me tell you watching it felt so eerily up close and personal. The Severence procedure is incredibly similar to having DID, with a few exceptions, since it is based on a theoretical procedure and not real life occurrence. In real life the severing comes from intensive prolonged childhood traumatic experiences that you can't escape, so your brain splits you into parts, or several pieces. It's more complicated than one part experiences trauma and another part lives normally, it's actually more similar to Severance in that different parts/altars end up having different jobs and behaviors developed based off of experiences they have to deal with. Like Mark's job is coping with his grief and he is unequipped to deal with social situations, while Mark's innie is actually fairly skilled at socializing and handling higher stress situations that occur at work because he has no other choice than to adapt. Memories work a bit differently too, it's very rare for someone to have a complete blackout when another altar is in control, the way it happens in the show. For me it's like, if your memory of the previous day is a movie, sometimes you will only have a trailer to remember what happened, sometimes it will be a few pictures. Going back to what I said at the beginning, I think the scariest part of Severence is that your brain is only supposed to function like that if some really awful shit has happened, and structuring a work environment based off of maintaining a severed state in an employee's mind is setting a precedent for abuse and exploitation. It becomes the end goal of this type of environment, and what's even worse is that season 1 was just showing the company's experimenting with using this procedure, they want to make it a standard in the future.

this completely ignores that Mark got the procedure to forget his OUTTIE existence, not because he hated his job. It’s also important to note this show is about corporate culture and bureaucracy more than labor itself. I think a major lesson to take from season 1 is that the desire to forget painful experiences results in total loss of control, it’s about the extremes of being anti-confrontational.

I can't really explain why but getting an innie to experience the pain of childbirth for you is an asshole move.
@CinemastersUltimateTimeline
@CinemastersUltimateTimeline Жыл бұрын
I'll take a stab at it if you like... The idea of going through any kind of pain sucks but if you choose to have a child then you take the good with the bad. So choosing to force someone else to go through the pain and suffering for a choice you made is textbook cruelty. But, yeah there's just something really repulsive about this. I don't have any insight into the act of child labor it self but I think many cultures treat this act with a certain amount of reverence in spite of the suffering and so to see it treated so callously just to get out of it with no regard for the person put in your place is messed up. - de Janglez.

The scariest thing for me is that the severance procedure is an actual, real thing that exists in people, it's DID. I'm glad someone else mentioned this. Mark's situation of losing his wife, being unable to function well enough to hold down a job and literally making a version of himself that isn't devastated by that trauma so that he can continue to at least be semi-functioning really reminded me of DID. The situation for the severed workers in Severance is already bad enough, I can't imagine how being stuck with many different versions of yourself in the same body (many systems have more than two alters), without being able to control when or where that switch happens must be like.

The office building with the brutalist 80s architecture gives a special reminiscent tone of socialist/communist countries where propaganda was used to glorify the labor and the workers of that time. Good take on the show. Most people seem to miss the central theme of the show... that of being a play on the sinister nature of life, as opposed to it merely being a play on the corporate work environment. Sure, the sinister nature of out life, or those in Severance is to ultimately work and produce for another entity. But overall life is sinister as f__k. Life feeds on life. Life is filled with pain and suffering. Some or many of course have it worse than others, but our existence is pretty tragic. We know nothing else so we adapt to it and some or many have something in the realm of Stockholm Syndrome for this life and give praise to what they believe is their creator. Much like the Severance workers giving their praise and thanks to Lumen. In the break room they apologize for the harm they have brought this world etc, etc, which is the same idea with those who believe they are born into sin and must be forgiven and must give praise to their creator on a regular basis and apologize for their existence, upon which they will be rewarded by their creator.

One other aspect of the show that stood out to me (and is so obvious, it might not be worth mentioning) is how Lumen's founder is portrayed as this deity-like figure. His words are treated as scripture, miss Kobel has a literal shrine to him and wears Petey's chip like a cross necklace... Perhaps it's commentary on how we worship rich tech entrepreneurs? To be honest, I find it to be one of the less compelling parts of the show's imagery, not sure what to make of it.

It doesn't surprise me Ben Stiller is part of the making of this show. It has a similar dark tone like Cable Guy. Of course Cable Guy had more comedy in it but still on the dark side. Plus Jim's speech at the end was basically a prediction of the present day we live in. Why the hell would anyone need to be severed to do this job? No one has any idea what work they are doing anyway! I really hope s2 answers this!!

RIGHT! why are the numbers scary, What was with the dance at the end, and what the hell is up with those goats? If I had to speculate I think the severance procedure is a means of keeping both the innie and the outies in the dark... also labor. Thanks for watching. - de Janglez

It could be because the coworkers could meet outside of work and try to put things together. In the “innie” world they are closely guarded so no department knows what the other is doing. If you could easily find a coworker where people can’t watch you on camera, you could start to put two and two together to understand what your job is. Another thing I found through a separate source provided by Apple TV is that their work has ties to real life events. I think they’d start to know what was impacted by their jobs if they were in the real world. We’ll probably see more of that in season 2.

Can someone explain the thing about the senators child? Minute 23
@CinemastersUltimateTimeline
@CinemastersUltimateTimeline Жыл бұрын
Certainly, I was trying to draw a parallel between the suffering of going through child labor (a term we use to denote the work and pain of giving birth) and the pain and suffering of work labor. The senator's wife uses an Innie to avoid that suffering the same way that Mark or the other outies avoid the suffering of their work labor. I did this to underline the idea that the show is antinatalist because not only is existence suffering but so is the process of bringing a person into existence. The senator's wife avoids the suffering of natalism by pawning it off on someone else. That's why I think that this example is such a blatant piece of evidence for antinatalism. thank you for asking the question and I hope that provides some elucidation. - de Janglez.

@@CinemastersUltimateTimeline I appreciate you talking about antinatalism. Wether you agree or not, attempting to educate people on other views in a respectful way gives me hope for the exposure of this philosophy and the future. Antinatalism says “Procreation is hugely selfish”? Human beings helping their species to survive is selfish? This makes no sense. The labor involved in suffering in order for a species to survive is always worth it. Otherwise the species ceases to exist. And to argue for that outcome is beyond mental.
@CinemastersUltimateTimeline

That's a perfectly valid reaction. Many people don't see the sense in antinatalism. but It's worth noting that there are people out there who think this way and why they might come to these conclusions. Thanks for watching and commenting - de Janglez

But why is it imperative for our species to survive? Why is it justified to bring someone into existence in order to work their entire life to sustain others? People never consent to being brought into the world to sustain the existence of humanity. But people do it for their own selfish desires.

@@quincywashington9355 Your questions are valid. But your current perspective is one that requires spiritual wisdom be removed entirely from existence. There is much spiritual wisdom present in numerous cultures around the world and throughout history, any of which one can draw from in order to expand one’s point of reference regarding human existence and suffering. There is much comfort to be drawn from this wisdom, if one is willing to seek it out.

@@quincywashington9355 I've always thought the argument for the perpetuation of the species was problematic. you put it nicely by stating that the individual is not responsible for the perpetuation of a species. I think you can take this a step further by looking at the existential reasoning behind the individual as well as the species. If there is no purpose in life for an individual the same could be said of the species. so perpetuating the species would be done purely for the reason in itself. great debating my well-read ballers. - de Janglez

@@jaredcaines6688 Wisdom is only necessary assuming that the continuation of humanity is as well. If there is no one to experience wisdom there is no need for it to exist. You could point at any value and say that it would disappear with humans. But non-existent people do not wish for such things to exist. They wish for nothing because they don’t exist. Deprivation is only possible given a state of existence.
