I lived in the Falls for over 30 years and never heard of this story. We liked to eat at The Glens Tavern on Fridays for their fish dinner. One story you might want to check out is the military plane that crashed several blocks from the river on High Street in 1944. Having moved from High Street in 1942 to 3rd Street. the plane started spewing smoke and flames directly over our house. The pilot ejected and came down almost hitting our 2 story garage before landing a short distance away in some pine trees. My dad and several neighbors cut him down from the tree. We, of course had no idea where the plane landed, but some hours later found out it crashed near our old home on High Street and my dad drove us over there and we saw the wreck. Two young children had been playing in the yard and evidently been called in for lunch just before the plane crashed into it.

I grew up in West Akron, and moved to the Falls in the mid-80's (pre-Sheraton and Front Street Mall). When driving down Front Street, I noticed a small, unassuming sign that said, Observation Bridge for Viewing Falls", pointing to an equally unassuming wooden bridge. One day I decided to see what it was about, and was absolutely gobsmacked at the spectacular view. That's when I realized why it's called Cuyahoga Falls--LOL!!! I also realized that when you're driving, there are very few places where you can see the river from the road. Thanks for the very interesting history!

I just discovered your channel and have been binge watching your episodes. Just finished watching this one and to my surprise, you named a Martha Kline! That was my paternal grandmother's name! More coincidences; my great grandmother (Martha's mother) was killed in a horse and buggy accident in 1923. And my aunt (Martha's daughter) lived on Propect Ave. in her adult life. I currently live in Williamsport PA, but originally lived in Avis near where the buggy accident happened. Keep the episodes coming, I am throughly enjoying learning about Ohio's history!

Great video. This wasnt the only disaster on this bridge. There was another incident some years prior to the trolley. The bridge was closed for repairs. Two ppl crossed the bridge at nite. Horse, carriage and the two passenger fell right thru a large open area in the deck. The horse was found 15ft down on a ledge, the reigns dangling over the side with splintered wood hanging from them. The carriage smashed to bits in the fall and the two occupants were killed. Both were found downstream. One days after, the other not until 4 yrs later.

Tom Moran took a dump on that ledge, below the bridge. He then kicked it into the river. I'll never forget that faithful day......

There's a nice series of those "Haunted--" books. I actually hadn't heard of the High Bridge so it was nice learning new history! I lived at Akron U and the off-campus area so there's a lot of stuff that I don't know about in the Falls. :) Where is Oakwood? I think I might be thinking Glendale is the one snuggled behind the old Thomas Edison house on the hill; I've had supernatural run ins there. I know there's a cemetary in the Falls (probably more than one) between Main Street and the river in the main area--but my memories are from the late 90's so age could have slipped into my memories since it wasn't somewhere I have returned in quite awhile.

I like trolleys and their history, but didn't know this story, so thanks for the telling. One thing which puzzles me very greatly is why do alleged psychic manifestations, hauntings, call them what you wish, attach themselves to certain tragedies and locations, but not others? There doesn't seem to be any consistent pattern to them - some major incidents, such as battles or colliery disasters don't have such a legacy, while much lesser ones do. Anybody out there have any ideas?

John Davies I have heard of some regarding battles especially the hauntings of Gettysburg. You could listen I think on you tube or older TV programs, even those who do the reenactments of the battles have ghostly tales to tell!!
