Welcome to The Horrors Of 2023, a series where, leading up to Halloween, I’ll be taking a look at some of the horror(ish) movies that have been released this year (so far)!
And today we’ll be looking at probably the most polarising horror movie of the year, SKINAMARINK. A low-budget independent experimental type of analog horror that’s been dividing audiences ever since it created a lot of buzz for itself at the start of the year. So, let’s see what all the fuzz is about!
If you enjoyed this video or my channel in general and would like to support what I do, you could always take a look over at / horriblereviews

This was my favorite horror movie experience in AGES - but I can 100% understand why someone wouldn't get anything out of it. It has a very targeted audience.

I drove an hour away to the nearest cinema to see Skinamarink because I wanted to appreciate the novelty that a film with a $15,000 budget got mass distribution. This doesn't really happen, and I couldn't pass it up! So I decided before seeing it that I would have a good time with it, and I did because I came in with the right expectations. It got under my skin, and I'm glad to have witnessed that moment.

very very scary. I think the childhood fear angle is even more a childhood abuse angle. like it really brought up memories of me watching cartoons and trying to have a normal one, in childhood terms, while my parents were getting drunk/hitting each other. this really brought up this primal fear and sense of foreboding when you're being a child and you know that terrible things you don't understand are happening just out of your line of sight, but you know they're terrible and terrifying

I honestly think it was one of the best horror experiences I've had in a LONG time! I've watched a lot of horror movies, and have become pretty numb to a lot of them(especially jumpscares), but watching this by myself, in my room, with the lights off and headphones on, actually unnerved me for the first time in forever!I even had to sleep with a light on for the first time in years hahaha

5:04 I struggled to stay invested in this movie, but this one shot just about made the 100 minute runtime worth it. That's the creepiest moment in anything I've seen in a movie in the last 20 years.

There's a barely visible face in the middle. In the full movie it holds on that shot for what feels like a full minute.

I was a very very fearful child growing up in a big dark creaky house. It was nice to get at least one movie to honestly attempt to and even slightly succeed at capturing the way that such a formative experience remains contained within the deep memory. It's what a lot of liminal space is about (for better or worse). Not so much a philosophical meditation on space without purpose, but trying to find a sweet spot of just enough context that you will link it to the almost-forgotten times. Hence all this focus on suburban homes, pools and malls. Just for that I'm glad this movie exists. I also think it's too long, but there's no movie police telling me to watch it in one sitting either, so turning it off once you have had enough of the aesthetic seems perfectly valid to me. It is mesmerizing territory either way. Games have so far done a better job of it, but not by much.

For me, the movie wasn't so much scary, as it was strangely nostalgic, if that makes sense. It tapped in to something familiar from my youth. Late night as a child, falling asleep, and trying to make sense of your environment as your senses dull. The shots of the ceiling with light coming through doorways strangely took me back. It just reminded me so much of being a kid and falling asleep. Which I think may be the overall intent; Not being able to make out faces. The faded whispering of the parents. What's playing on the TV repeating because your tired brain can't keep track properly. Things in the house disappearing, and the spaces closing in. Etc. All that being said, I think the runtime is a detriment to the movie's overall impact. It really didn't need to be as long as it was.

Yeah, but like I get that. However, how many kids are really scare of the dark? I feel like this trope in movies is not based on reality. I don't know anyone that had to sleep with the light on. We use to walk out in the woods at night, we lived out in the sticks. I don't ever remember having a nightmare or anything like that as a kid. The only time I remember being creeped out, was when I started reading those alien books, like Communion, and that's only because they were in the Non-Fiction section of the library and all, so it was like setup as being real. But it only really lasted like a couple of days after reading a book on it, or watching a TV show or movie about the subject. Then I would be fine, and this was like when I was older, like 12yrs old or something(well when they started putting out the abduction stuff, before that it was just stuff you saw in the say, and I read those books when I was like 6 or something and it was not scary to me)

5:54 I know exactly what you mean. It’s these abstract memories of being scared in the dark as a child, that made this film somewhat interesting to me. It just needed more substance. Not even that much more, really. A little bit to hold on to.

I may be in the minority but I loved Skinamarink. When I was a little kid, my first ever nightmare consisted of my home with all the lights off, with only the moonlight coming in through the windows. I was alone. All I could see was my tricycle at the end of a long hallway. I knew my tricycle wanted to hurt me, and I watched my tricycle wheel it's way towards me on it's own. It scared the absolute shit out of me. That's what this movie made me think of.

As a huge horror fan who has seen literally hundreds upon hundreds of films, this was the ONLY movie I'd seen to date that scared me so bad I had to pause it and break myself away momentarily. It taps into some very specific fears and feelings, but I totally get anyone who couldn't get into it. The jump scares though, man, they heightened my sense of imminent threat to petrifying levels.

I 100% understand why anyone out there would hate this film with a passion. Everything you said here is right on the money. Having said that, this movie truly terrified and upset me. I can't think of any other similar viewing experience. When I went outside after watching it for my usual post-watch cigarette, I was shaking and creeped out by the shadows around my home, and went to bed that night with the nightlight on. It taps into something from our early childhoods, something quite visceral and probably repressed.

I think I definitely fall in the category of opinion you and Chris Stuckman also have: good concept and some INCREDIBLE atmosphere, but it is just a little too long and I think if it had a bit less of those cornyish jump scares and had a bit of smaller runtime I think you have a very solid movie in that! As it is now, I still am not like the hugest fan but I respect the hell out of Kyle’s first feature length film and I will be there day one to see whatever else he has cooking.

For me, the movie worked. I watched at home, lights out, on my computer with headphones. But I still agree on your opinion that it was too long. The were some strong scenes (look under the bed…) and great atmosphere. And I totally get why others could find it boring as it’s very non-conventional, experimental and there’s very little to nearly no focus on the story and characters.

I remember renting this and then finding out midway that it was analog horror and thinking "dammit!". I just feel like Skinamarink has so many moments of nothing happening that whenever something does happen I'm already so zoned out that I feel nothing towards it, except maybe relief that something actually happens,

I liked pretty much everything about the movie but what killed it was the stupid jumpscares. The jumpscares made it so that I was prepping my ears at any creepy scene because I was ready for it to destroy my eardrums. It took me out of the movie. What I liked about the movie was the camera shots, use of shadows, the children being depicted as actual children with children logic instead of that really stupid trope of every kid being a super genius. Like in a big budget movie the kid would "outsmart" the Skinamarink by making him slip on marbles or whatever. This movie doesn't do that and so the kids are helpless. A perfect example of this is when the girl sees something that upsets her and so they just move the couch ineffectively in front of the hallway. That's actual child logic.

I understand why so many didn't dig it. I love analog horror, though; some of my favourites are Local 58, Greylock, CH/SS, No Through Road, and the Backrooms series. In a genre (or collection of many subgenres) such as horror, where it seems like just about everything one can do with it has been done, I find this kind of stuff highly refreshing. All the themes of childhood trauma, misremembered memories, nightmarish nostalgia, old television and home video tropes, I think it all works so well together. Skinamarink is sort of the final form of all those preceding VHS-style, found footage and analog horror stuff we (folks around my age) grew up with. Know that I did watch this movie under the influence of a fairly amount of Cannabis and Dextromethorphan and at many points in the murky film grain I could make out horrific, undulating shapes that took on a palpable sense of menace, especially in those scenes that are so dark as to be, for the most part, nearly impossible to discern anything clearly. Faces and humanoid shapes acquire unfamiliar, alien qualities. It conversely encapsulates the fear of the unknown and the fear of knowing how ineffectual you are against the unknown at such an age as the two protagonists.

my partner had some info about this movie beforehand while I went in completely blind as to what kind of movie i was watching. it left both of us feeling unnerved with the dark shots and eerie setting. i feel kinda middle ground about it. i like that it was trying to appeal to old fears from childhood. it just isn't fun to watch as most of the time it really is how you say "different shots of the interior of a house" and can drag on at parts. in the end the movie has many kinds of interpretations. some see it as hell or purgatory. others see it as the young boy who gets hurt in the beginning being stuck in a coma. had some very eerie scenes but definitely a movie you have to be ready to sit down and pay attention with.

Loved this movie. Didn't scared me actually, but gave me this unsetling vibe of something that is reconizable but at the same time utterly alien. Like you said, it is a movie about liminal spaces with a bit of creepypasta to spice things up. So, naturally aimed to a very specific audience. Probably fans of internet horror (like me), who enjoy weird stuff like the Backorooms or the SCP Foundation will enjoy it more than anyone else.

I had an interesting experience watching this movie. I wanted to immerse myself as much as possible, so I watched in bed on my laptop with the lights off. Like you, I knew by a certain point that it wasn’t for me. I got bored, I fell asleep. One of the jump scares woke me up and sent my heart racing. After that, I was fully engaged in the film until the ending, which I particularly thought was creepy and well done. However, there was too much boredom to redeem itself to me. Especially with the cheap jump scares, they also pissed me off.

I loved it personally, I thought the jump scares were well placed and earned, and left me tense afterwards. In my case i have some memories related to the theme of the movie that really made it work for me. The jumpscares i saw them as a way to really let the audience know that the tension is going to lead to somewhere, not particulary a fan of them but there were few and not very close between each other so i think they work in this case.

I loved this film. Not because it's good (which I think it is) but because of the budget and what they managed to do. It's incredibly uncomfortable to sit through which was the point. I LOVE this film, but I don't think I could watch it a second time based on how long it is. It is a baseline low-budget analog horror film that knows what it is and is flawed and successful in many ways. It's hard to really sit through based on how long each shot is boring. The pacing isn't there... but for what it does, it exceeds where it strived... It's really hard to accurately critique it outside of criticizing the pacing and time spent watching. It could've easily been an hour and 30 minutes to tell its story.

I respect this movie a lot but it’s work to watch it. You have to decide you’re going to stick with it rather than get swept up in it naturally. I’m glad I stuck with it cause the last 20 minutes or so were absolutely terrifying but it’s hard to imagine ever sitting through the entire thing again. There’s a tendency to associate inaccessibility with artistic integrity but I don’t agree. I think it would have been possible to have a somewhat more engaging version of this that has the same impact.

I would not have enjoyed this movie if I didn't watch reviews on what to expect, or "how to watch it". The theme of children in peril makes me ill, especially when I realized that these kids are gonna be tormented, killed, and brought back continuously until the monster is bored of them in x amount of years. I thought it was fantastic overall, but it's understandable how it didn't hit with a good lot of movie goers. And yeah, screw those jumpscares lol. It feels like Kyle is aware this kind of style could slowly become monotonous, leading him to add jumpscares, which I think did a disservice to the film.

I was born in 1975, and grew up watching Fulchi's movies in the theater lol. I never was scared of the dark, however I do remember there was a time where I was scared of aliens abducting me lmao. But you have to remember in the 80s abduction books and stuff was really in its prime then. But I never believed in anything like monsters or ghosts, so they would never had scared me IRL. Thinking aliens were real, that was something I was worried about( now I don't believe in any of that nonsense lol). Like I get this was more like watching a nightmare or something? I think this was a short movies at first, and that is how it should have stayed, IMO

I got an hour in and ended up just getting angry and turning it off. I enjoyed the bed scene but other than that I could not recommend this to anyone. If someone liked it I’m genuinely happy for them but I honestly hated it

I tried with this film but it just didn't resonate with me. Staring at weird shots of a house at weird angles for 20 minutes at a time just wasn't my cup of tea.

The children are horrible actors and make no sense, contributing nothing to the film

It just felt like I was watching a series of deep web video clips put together to make a movie lol. Tbh..kinda meh.

I quite liked the aesthetic but apart from a couple of moments it was a complete waste of time for me. It certainly didn’t scare me or work as a movie. It possibly might have made a decent short film. I have patience and i like films that require you to use your imagination to a degree but there really isn’t much to see here. There’s too much amazing cinema out there that I’d rather watch than this again, life’s too short to rewatch nearly 2 hours of ceilings, doorframes and toys on a carpet.

I loved it, loved the jumpscares, was on the edge of my seat the ENTIRE movie. Watched it with 8 other people, half of them left halfway through and only one other person felt it like I did. Fair. Not for everybody.

this movie looks awful...as does the youtube stuff he makes...so many horror writers and horror game makers think that houses and weird lighting makes for effective horror...it's so narrow minded...there's so much to explore and yet mainstream horror repeats the same ideas over and over...such a shame!! i watched this film the other night, so good: Nattevagten (1994)

Tried to watch it because I love polarizing movies, realized after 4 minutes what absolute trash this excuse of a movie was and quickly turned it off after skimming thru briefly. The director clearly has ulterior motives and made a quick cashgrab for the cowardly zoomers and millenials, its like babbys 1st horror movie. Its not a movie but a "get rich easily" type scam for the soyboy director which is absolutely despicable
