Yu-Gi-Oh! had to make a game rule change because of bad hygiene once. Not a tournament thing, an actual mechanic of the game was changed because people were being stinky and sweaty. There's this one card (Yu-Jo Friendship) that asks for a handshake so both players may equalize the life points basically, however, if you had another card in hand (Unity), the other player was forced to make the handshake. If they didn't do it it'd be a game loss for them. Thing is, people noticed that, and they started playing with the most awful hand hygiene they could just so the opponent would be grossed out and give up the game for not shaking hands. Not washing their hands, purposefully getting them sweaty, coughing and sneezing on them, etc. You could do this in a tournament and you'd win. This led to the definition of a game ruling where the "handshake" in question is just the idea of a handshake, and no contact was necessary so long as you agreed to the idea of that handshake. Absolutely wild.
@TheRealBot00143 минут бұрын
Nah it was a hypothetical that someone pointed out on a forum that got a lot of attention and the game rules were changed to avoid it happening at an official event

Favorite ruling to ever be made for any card game is “you cannot eat your opponent’s cards.” Many tcgs were forced to implement this because people would destroy another person’s card, then call over a judge to disqualify the other player for having a deck that didn’t have the minimum amount of cards. Thank you for covering this ruling.
@xrhin0x895Күн бұрын
This is why you get your decks checked by a judge as soon as you walk in. Why would I register a deck with x number of cards and then later be called out for having only x-1 cards. Real cheaters would try to add more cards to their deck after the fact to gain advantage not try to remove them.

The assistant manager had to kick a guy out because he smelt so bad that he drove everyone out of the back room. Also can confirm that Yu-Gi-Oh players smelt way worse than Magic and Pokemon players.
@POTATOEMPN6 сағат бұрын
The way you say all that makes me feel like you're probably somebody who plays more magic and pokémon and does more collecting of those cards as opposed to Yu-Gi-Oh. Because as somebody who mainlined Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments and magic the gathering tournaments for 12 years fucking straight? I promise you magic the gathering and Warhammer have got everyone beat by a fucking country mile. Magic of the gathering fans are literally the stinkiest sweatiest fattest neck beers on the planet because the vast majority of them are literally your standard stereotypical straight white gross dude. Meanwhile your average Yu-Gi-Oh enjoy are tends to be the slightly faddish lazy neck beard who is kind of like a 60/40 may or may not shower. And there's a hell of a lot more girls playing you give than there are girls playing magic The gathering. And some of them stink too unfortunately lol. But you also have to remember that a lot of the people playing these card games are poor. Like I remember a kid that I knew when I was growing up named Zack. His house had nothing but cats. His mom had two children and like 15 or 16 cats so no matter what he did he always stink all of his clothes smelled all of his shirt smelled it didn't matter how much he showered it didn't matter what cologne or whatever he just so he eventually just stopped caring and just kept getting bullied and just kept playing Yu-Gi-Oh and magic and stuff because what's he supposed to do in his whole house smells like that? Some kids I knew they were too poor and sometimes they didn't even get to take a shower that day sometimes they didn't get to use shampoo and soap. A lot of these kids are also being bullied at home they're being bullied at school and the only place they don't get bullied is in the card shop. So to them it's a place of safety and sanctuary just like the library was for me. How anywhere outside of my house was a sanctuary compared to being inside of it. And I was also one of those kids playing Yu-Gi-Oh except I was the polar opposite of everyone else. I was smart I was tall I was dark I was handsome and I showered everyday. I brushed my hair I brushed my teeth I did the whole general self-care routine every single fucking day. And I made sure my friends did as much as possible too because I understood that some of them were as I said poor and unable to do certain things or depressed and also unable to do certain things. All the times when somebody is stinky it's because they're so depressed they can't even be bothered to get clean because the most important thing they have to do is pretending that everything is okay so that nobody has to bother them because they don't want to be bothered
@Dragnbreth29420 сағат бұрын
Not a card game, but this reminded me of an off suppressed memory. I remember when my high school held an esports tournament in the library and cafeteria on the presentation dropdown screens. It was at the same time we were on break from our indoor percussion competition, so a bunch of people that just sweat a ton recently, in costumes that were still fresh from the shop (still had that weird print smell) who thought we smelled odd already, went and watched a bunch of esports teams play Mario cart for the last bit of our break. When we opened the door, the room was already so rank it lingered for a literal three weeks. We left after five minutes because we were distracting the players with our cheers, and realized that we didn’t actually smell that bad on our own when we stepped out. I really don’t mean to be rude but it smelled like whataburger and onions. Hope the players had fun at least, and hope our cheers weren’t too distracting.

16:30, the Pokemon card being eaten reminds me of a legendary story from MtG involving a card called "Chaos Orb". It is an old card that involved a dexterity mechanic, you would flip the card on to the table from at least a foot above and whatever cards it touches are destroyed. Well, one clever player ripped his own Orb into pieces and scattered it across his opponents board, destroying everything. Seems brilliant, however...his opponent called over a judge and the judge ruled a DQ against the Orb user because now his deck was short one card and was therefore illegal LOL.

My brother was in town for a visit, so we decided to go wander around our local mall. I had the idea of, “Hey! Let’s go to the mall’s game store.” I thought it’d be rad, cause it had a bunch of old games, and normally the atmosphere there was normally chill… There was a magic tourney or maybe Pokémon tourney. Either way, we were hit by a waft. A LITERALY WAFT of stank that neither of us have ever experienced. Like in my youth I worked as maintenance for the local courthouse, and sometimes we’d have to go pick up large quantities of muck, large items, and filth. One time we’d have to grab a cow that died in a creek and it hadn’t been reported for a week. That smell was tame, TAME, compared to that tourney going on. Like this was a SpongeBob, “I’m ugly and I’m Proud moment.” But it turns out it was just the stench oozing out their mouth. That was these people. Like goddamn. Needless to say my brother and I left, and we had a good laugh.

This is why I had to stop around 2012 even though it was casual play and never tournament. A card could be banned/restricted on a whim or had to be current version. A lot of my good MtG cards are so old they don't have expansion symbols. My last YGO pack was "Pharaoh's Servant". I only own the first 151 Pokémon from 1998. The other gripe is people sucking all the fun out of playing due to taking things _way_ too seriously as if they, too, will be banished forever to the Shadow Realm.
@oldskewel14 сағат бұрын
Of those seven people, at least two have some sort of issue with their ego. So expect everyone to lose to their $1.5k deck they will never dare take to a bigger tournament at the risk of losing a game. I say that because my college started a small MTG club and one guy got so worked up about losing to pre-cons that he ended up spending $2.7k in a month on two decks just to feel superior. He still lost to the $10 crabs and counterspells deck. It was not a pretty sight.

When I first started playing Magic I couldn't believe the smell in the dungeon-esk store that was the only one in town to play. I decided to just play at my local college. Thankfully, a store opened up nearby where I lived and I spoke to the owner. He straight up said he would ask anyone smelly to leave, would have AC running on high and wanted to keep a very comfortable atmosphere. He achieved that and the store was super clean, smelled nice and really upped the amount of people playing TCGs in town!

Worked a wrestling event a week or so ago, and someone not only dumped their leftover chicken and noodles in the toilet, but then proceeds to take a dump as well. Mind you, this was one of the worst toilets to flush. Where you flush, and it looks like the water is barely going down. So naturally, it clogged. Every now and then, I'd walk into a stall and see paper towels in the bowl. Dude, there's toilet paper right there, two rolls worth, and you're using the rough paper towels? So of course, that clogged as well. And of course, you're not allowed to bring in alcohol, but with certain events, you can buy alcohol, like you do. But I've seen thousands of little shooter bottles all around the bathroom floor. As well as the ladies hygiene box in the stalls.

As a Yu-Gi-Oh player who's been to a decent amount of events, I've definitely come across some stinkers in my time. But the worst tcg players I've ever come across was one locals just after COVID. As we would struggle to fill one group of 6, let alone two, one week they had the Yu-Gi-Oh and MTG locals on the same night and the stench of those 4 magic players in the other group was so unbearable, the Yu-Gi-Oh guys in our group had tears in our eyes and we're rushing to get our games done as quickly as possible so we could go upstairs and outside because you could still smell them upstairs. I never really had a large issue with other peoples hygiene around me. I'm sure there are a lot of people at those events that were stinking it up but I never really noticed. Most the time my issue was them just acting like assholes. Like damn I know it's a competitive event but that doesn't mean we can't just play the game and have some fun, some people take it way too seriously. I was at a modern event in Columbus, OH and I was playing a guy. On his turn he just sat there for literal minutes just trying to think of his next move. By this point it had been a while so I just said something along the lines of "Sooo it's still your turn?" and the dude literally yelled at me "I'M THINKING!" my two buddies right behind me, and myself, were just taken so off guard from it. Like damn chill out dude. He ended up winning, probably because I gave him so much time to think his lines through. In retrospect I should have 100% called on a judge for slow play. Winning that game would have gotten me in to day two, but it is what it is.

The glasses guy is just a fun dude honestly, he's having fun and I think he knows its cringe and makes it funnier. Videos like these also make me want to go all out on dressing nicely and smelling as great as possible (Even though I dont play card games) just to uplift the image of these game communities up.

Its been about 20 years since I last played in a TCG Tourney, but Players being "Stinky" was never an issue I experienced, nor something I even heard anyone complain about. How did things get this bad.

The terms "self respect" and "accountability" are no longer in the dictionary.

I played LOTR TCG when I was in high school and we had one guy who came that was legendarily stinky. I was the TO and wrote his name as Stinky on the board so he'd get the hint. He didn't, and he embraced the name unfortunately. And he stole my Sauron deck too, I'm almost positive

@DennisJDoesVoice I had to deal with Cheaters and Thieves, but not someone who stank like that. Even when I worked in a Friends Game Shop it was never an issue.

I’d love to see another video like this about conventions, I’m sure there are plenty of similar stories
