I think Klingons respond to a more, assertive personality type. Grilka also takes him more seriously when he's more forceful and direct about seeing the books.

The smug pride that Quark expresses when he finishes Grilka’s thought that D’Ghor schemed her house “like a Ferengi” sells the moment. It is a combination of “I told you we should do this my way,” and that of “yes, this is _exactly_ how the Ferengi do it!”

I really enjoyed this episode. Mary Kay Adams was stunning and powerful as Grilka, and Shimerman was awesome as usual, when given a chance to do something interesting with Quark. I especially liked the respect he earned from both Grilka and GOWRON.

He also does it in a straightforward manner. Vulcans prefer cold logic, Cardassians love talking between the lines. But Klingons respect those that speak plain and true. Qwark is a skilled merchant, so he knows how to tailor his approach for different clients.

I really hate how they messed with Quark in later seasons. In earlier seasons, Quark is actually one of the most equal minded characters as far as gender relations (i.e. - him being fine with his mother wearing clothes while Rom would rather she was naked). It was only in later seasons that they threw all of that out.

He didn’t change, the circumstances did. The last time I watched through the series I realized that. He did NOT change into an honorable ferengi that held traditional ferengi values while respecting other people’s cultures even if he didn’t like things about them. He was always that from the beginning. Our perspective of him came from our own prejudice and bigotry. Remember his a BAT TENDER on a space station with a wide variety of alien races. He was every bit as honorable as Kira, Odo, and Sisko from the start. The only difference is that he could do different things because he was a CIVILIAN.
