I'm failing to see any drastic differences in the arcade version, perhaps a little bit higher poly models, but they're very close.

Models are much more detailed and not as segmented. Backgrounds are more overall detailed despite the current emulator missing alot of textures and some effects the real hardware had. There's also some light sourcing on models despite the arcade hardware's limitations. The only thing the pc version has above the arcade version is being able to display at a higher resolution than the original arcade hardware.

Yep, the reason you don't hear the music when you played the game are probably because you're playing a pirated version that wasn't ripped correctly to have music in the game.

I suspect it has something to do with modern sound cards not playing the music correctly. Probably need an old pc with sound blaster card or use pcem. :)

Resident Evil vs THOTD. Both set in a mansion. Both set in 1998. Both have a deluded, crazy scientist (Wesker and Curien). Both make you have to save someone (Chris/Barry and Sophie). Both have an evil final boss trying to take over mankind (Tyrant and Magician). Both have sequels set in cities (Raccoon City and Venice). Both have prequels set on a train (Overkill has a level set on a train).

House of the Dead essentially served as a spoof of Resident Evil. With RE's slow and serious undertones, it's natural for HoTD to be a light-hearted, fast-paced experience of the same genre with some level of goof.

This is probably my #1 favorite arcade game. I also own the Sega Saturn port from Japan, but its framerate and hit detection doesn't hold up compared to the original Model 2 version. I've been able to master this game and score, believe it or not, around 90,000+ (there's secret paths and boss exploits). Definitely a classic SEGA shooter :)

For the one who would like to have background music. You can always find 2 version of game file: ISO & RIP. If you just run RIP file, there is no background music. If you want background music, you need to have ISO version too. Steps are as below: 1: Unzip ISO format and mount the cue file by virtual DVD such as Daemon. 2: Make sure the virtual DVD is using the first drive letter for any virtual or physical CD/DVD drive if you have more than one. (example, C: is HDD, then use D: for virtual DVD, and E: for physical DVD.) 3: Unzip RIP format and run exe file. For this House of the Dead, run thot3d.bat, then use default setting for better graphic. This will run the game in Direct3D hardware acceleration.

Hello! I was wondering how you got the background music working on your computer? I have a Toshiba Satellite 330CDT laptop that runs on Windows 98. It plays the voices and all the sound effects, yet no background music. I have a physical copy.

I'm not sure if old laptops need it, but 90s desktops generally required a cable that directly connected the CD drive to the sound hardware to hear CD audio. You might want to check that that is hooked up. If you get CD music in other stuff, then check to make sure Windows is mapping the drive to D: Some games are weirdly particular about that. Maybe also check that you've installed the last supported driver set for all of your hardware. Win98 generic drivers often worked well enough to get by, but they didn't always provide support for all of a card's features. If none of that works, just make a Bin/cue image of the disc, mount it through Daemon Tools and run it that way. One last thought - I think one of the budget releases actually cut the CD audio from the game. You might want to pop the disc into a regular CD player and check the number of tracks it has. If it only has a data track, your won't get any music.

The Saturn and pc version uses redbook audio, that's why is different, i love the pc version for that reason.

It was an arcade game, so it's pretty easy to pick up and jump right in. It's all mouse control. Left click shoot, right click reload. That's it :)

It always had music! I played this from the original disc. But way back in the day, if someone downloaded the game (or didn't have the CD-drive cabled directly to the sound card), they'd only hear the sound effects and voices.

most likely the SEGA Saturn version, they ported the stuff from the arcade but the resolution and graphics were heavily downgraded and they remixed some of the music. I prefer the arcade version cause the visuals for a low-poly game look fantastic, but I cant find a version where the screen isnt flashing every shot hahaha

Do you have the original CD? The music is all redbook audio tracks, so without the disc (or a bin/cue that has all of the tracks included) you won't hear any.
