I love this version. The amount of emotion put into each line is astonishing! You can imagine how the singer slightly smiles during certain lines, giving it a new life like an actor would. Absolutely amazing. The instrumentals are also wonderful, they lift the vocals and don’t overshadow them. Folk music is “fragile” to me due to how important the lyrics and emotions are, so it’s pleasing to hear that the musicians didn’t want to take away from that. Instead they simply support and fill in when needed. No complicated riffs, just those familiar notes to fill the air. Absolutely wonderful, it gives a new feel. This song doesn’t feel angry to me. It’s a new and needed take where you feel the sadness, and the way the character in question may laugh about some of the things that lead them to where they are now.

Goes back as a tavern song late 1600s early 1700s Europe and Britain, went across to the then colonies and really came back with British band The Animals..Good effort here mate 🇬🇧 uk

I stumbled onto this version only recently. I heard many versions in the past and thought nobody could surpass The Animals version, but I was wrong. I fell in love with this version the first time I played it and cannot stop playing it. The music, the singer's voice, the video of years gone by add to the melancholy and surrealness of this rendition. Well done sir.

I like this version. The first time I heard this when the Animals sang it back in the day. Ed Sullivan Show. Boy I'm dating myself! Anyway, by the early '70's I mentioned this tune to a girlfriend who had the music sheet to it, dated from the '50's. A female artist had sang it, but I can't remember her name. My friend pulled out her autoharp & sang it. It was more slowed down with a little more folk to it. But I do remember that there were more verses than what the Animals had sung. I'm happy to hear your version with all the verses. I hit the like button so it's in my liked video listing.
