I heard in an interview that Karl Urban did that originally, they did not intend for him to be there with Eowyn when Aragorn came to heal her, but Karl Urban fought for it saying that he had just discovered his sister lying nearly dead on the battlefield after seeing that image an hearing that cry of mourning, of course he would not leave his sister's side until he knew she was alright. Eomer's acting here was definitely some of his best.....the pain and worry on his face as he watches over her looks real.

This song is about Arwen after Aragorn died. She left her children and went into Lothlorien, but the woods are now abandoned. Trees turning from green to gold reffers to the Mallorn trees in the autumn. Arwen stays in her grandmothers old realm for a time, before voluntarily giving up her life in year 121 of the fourth age.

This is such an underrated scene. The weeps of Eomer as he sees his last remaining family dead on the floor. The angelic singing of Lady Arwen as the hands of the King of Men heals the fallen, and as Eowyn and Faramir, the two children of Rohan and Gondor who have seen so much pain and war, looking at each other with understanding. And all the while with the subtext of Arwen singing about her eventual grief and loneliness once Aragorn inevitably dies. What a masterpiece

I love how Eowyn is the centre of many different kinds of love: of family (With Eomer and Theodin), fellowship (With Merry and Aragorn) and romance (With Faramir), but each are equally as moving. She is so special, probably the best-written character in the series (or equal with Sam and Aragorn) even if she's not your personal favourite.

Eowyn and Faramir looking at each other for the first time gives me goosebumps. Even though they never interacted before, based on all you know about their characters up until this point it suddenly clicks how perfect they are for each other and that they’ll find their happy ending together after all the trauma they’ve both been through. It just clicks together so perfectly

@@Tom-qo4mz They both lost and sacrificed a lot during the war, and I think both of them had given up in a way, accepting that the War of the Ring would be the end of them. Eowyn intended to die in the battle of Minas Tirith, only she didn't. Faramir also had pretty much lost the will to live at that point, because he'd lost Boromir and his father had told him he'd rather Faramir had died instead of Boromir. Their relationship is basically about them finding hope in the future, and someone new to live for, rather than die for.

The Hands of the Healer are the Hands of the King "Aragorn knelt beside Faramir, and held a hand upon his brow. And those that watched felt that some great struggle was going on. For Aragorn’s face grew grey with weariness; and ever and anon he called the name of Faramir, but each time more faintly to their hearing, as if Aragorn himself was removed from them, and walked afar in some dark vale, calling for one that was lost ... taking two leaves, he laid them on his hands and breathed on them, and then he crushed them, and straightway a living freshness filled the room, as if the air itself awoke and tingled, sparkling with joy. And then he cast the leaves into the bowls of steaming water that were brought to him, and at once all hearts were lightened. For the fragrance that came to each was like a memory of dewy mornings of unshadowed sun in some land of which the fair world in spring is itself but a fleeting memory. But Aragorn stood up as one refreshed, and his eyes smiled as he held a bowl before Faramir’s dreaming face ... suddenly Faramir stirred, and he opened his eyes, and he looked on Aragorn who bent over him; and a light of knowledge and love was kindled in his eyes, and he spoke softly. ‘My lord, you called me. I come."

Faramir is the best character in Lotr. He straight up said to Aragorn "lord, I heard you call me". They've been the ruling family of Gondor, and he submits it immediately upon seeing Aragorn for the first time. And that after refusing to take the ring without a second thought, with his father breathing down his neck, and his home in dire need of salvation.

Where did Gandalf smile in this clip? He lowered his eyes and chin as a sign of respect and compassion towards Eomer's grief. He did the same thing as a sign of respect and reverence toward Aragorn, recognizing his kingship in the same scene, but it's not in this clip. Gandalf always slightly lowers his head at an authority figure. He did it with Thranduil, Aragorn, Ironfoot, Thorin, Elrond and Galadriel. Even though he is a divine messenger and guide, he shows leaders in Middle Earth the proper respect due to them. You're an idiot and so are the 221 and counting who liked your comment.

I think one of my favorite moments of this scene is that it solidifies Aragorn and Eowyn's platonic love for each other. Although she was originally interested in him romantically - causing some awkwardness for Aragorn whose heart was bound to Arwen - he never lets Eowyn down. He encourages her to be the daughter of kings and shieldmaiden of Rohan that she is. He heals her. He looks up to her, not down on her despite his age, knowledge and wisdom. He always treats her with the respect she deserves (unlike when the other men in Eowyn's life try to dissuade her from fighting for her realm). In this scene when she looks up at him after waking - it always felt to me like she was doing it with fresh eyes. She's no longer chasing a young girl's fancy. She's grown, become who she was meant to be, and she can appreciate Aragorn for his support of her on her journey.

Well observed, Eventhorizon6. You can tell she's made the romantic transition completely when her trothplight to Faramir is announced and she says to Aragorn, "Wish me joy, my liege lord and healer." But Eomer said, "Where is the Lady Eowyn , my sister; for surely she should be lying beside the king and in no less honour? Where have they bestowed her?" And Imrahil said: "But the Lady Eowyn was yet living when they bore her hither. Did you not know?" Then hope unlooked-for came so suddenly to Eomer's heart and with it the bite of care and fear renewed, that he said no more, but turned and went swiftly from the hall....

Karl Urban mentions in the commentary that originally he wasn't scheduled to appear in the Houses of Healing scene. So he went to Peter Jackson and said, "You know, after that massive display of grief and anguish (on the battlefield), don't you think it's a little odd that Eomers wouldn't be by her side?" And Peter agreed and said he should show up the next day.

Catzilla I love how much the actors care as well about the film, Viggo put in input for the fight with sauron at the black gate that was scrapped that it took away from the message and the meaning of aragorn’s sacrifice, that it wasn’t meant to be about them but for frodo whether living or dead. And they regularly meet up even today and are all still great friends. It really makes me swell with joy to know that they also loved this masterpiece when they were working on it, and weren’t just doing it for acclaim or money.

The backstory makes these scenes so poignant. And no sooner do we feel the relief of Eowyn's recovery than glimpse Faramir behind her door: one who shares the grief of the loss of his father/(her uncle), and who just himself recovered from death and his battle wounds. Remember that the last time she saw Aragorn, he was heading to the Paths of the Dead in the Mountain. She believed him dead. He brings her back from death. She finally realizes who and what he is-- much more than a Ranger of the North. Her look, to me, is one of fear, awe, and astonishment.

You know, in context, Eomer just fought in this crazy battle and won. Lost his king/uncle and many comrades, but still the battle was won. But suddenly finds his sister who he had no idea was there, near dead on the battlefield. Well acted my man.

Seeing Eomer and Aragorns expressions is so poignant... One is grief and one is shock. And both of their last words to the same person, Eomer scolding his sister's question of why Merry couldn't fight and Aragorn's words of rejection of her love, not exactly ones with care. And the very next moment, they both see that same person appearing practically dead...

Whoever hasn't seen the EE of LOTR is missing SOOOO much. I bought it on Blu-Ray last year and it was one of my best purchases. I watched all three with my brother, and it made such a difference, we liked them so much more, everything just fit better. And when that scene with Karl Urban came up, we just looked at each other telepathically saying "Holy sh*t!". We both expressed how thoroughly impressed we were by Karl Urban's performance here. You can seriously feel the pain in that scene. Not a whole lot of people can be that convincing in an instance like this...

I have read the books from a young age, seen these films, and I understand the story on very subtle levels...I have even written two songs about Middle Earth - one an elvish poem and the other about Anduril, Flame of the West. But as I watched these films at length lately I have come to realize that two of the most powerful scenes of all are with Eowyn slaying the Witch-King of Angmar (I am not man...) and saying farewell to her uncle Theoden, and of course this...Eomer's grief, so powerful, such a delivery by Karl Urban, so heartfelt. The music here, and in the Houses of the Holy, altogether are most poignant and beautiful. Such a medley of emotions. Eowyn, who almost died, encounters Faramir, who also was on the brink of death, and they come together in such high emotion. Well done, on all accounts. These are the sort of moments which have done Tolkien proud.

Thank you...the audio book is such a wonderful thing to do. Tolkien's poetry is astounding. I teach English and recently read Bregalad's Song or Lament (O Rowan Mine, I saw you shine upon a summer's day). I hope with all my heart that Tolkien's poetry will endure. I love the films passionately, but it gladdens my heart even more to have a father that read all the books to me, and to have sung one of Tolkien's poems in Elvish.

Kurt Urban's acting is beyond phenomenal when Éomer sees his sister lying on the ground among his fallen brothers. To make things worse for my eyes, Howard Shore and Liv Tyler delivers one hell of a soundtrack filled with incredible emotions. 😫😭 I rewatched the trilogy not so long ago with my girlfriend who hadn't seen the movies before. I barely managed to keep my tears at bay during "The Fellowship of The Ring" and "The Two Towers", but when we watched "The Return of The King", I couldn't keep the tears at bay anymore. 😭

Karl Urban was great as Eomer, especially in this sadly deleted scene. Eomer is one of the few characters, which I can't imagine differently than in the movie (I'm of those people, who saw the movie first), the only difference is that in my vision his eyes are blue (or gray), not green/brown, but it's just a tiny detail ;).
